MEN WE KNOW
Eli Cook, Of Eaton Township, was born August 24, 1842, at Mansfield, Ohio, and lived with his father on
a farm until he was 14 years of age when in 1856 they removed to Brookfield, Eaton County, to the farm
where his father, Erastus Cook, died a few years ago and across the road from Mr. Cook’s present farm.
He was educated in the district schools and remembers, as one of his most efficient teachers, J. Clark
Sherman now of Vermontville Echo.

As a young man he was industrious and studious but found time for the practice of marksmanship in
which he excelled. At the breaking out of the war young Cook felt too keenly the thrill of patriotism to
remain at home and, at age of 19, entered the service as a member of Berdan’s famous U.S.
Sharpshooters. This regiment was made up of the very best marksmen selected from eight different
states, and Mr. Cook was one of the 100 men who were selected at Detroit for the honor of serving in it.
The competition was spirited, but Mr. Cook bore off his honors easily. The uniform of this regiment was
at first gray, but was changed to green after a few men had been killed by being mistaken for rebels.
In February, 1862, he was taken with the black measles at Washington and came very near dying. He
might have had his discharge but he preferred to remain, although the measles left him in a condition
from which he can never hope to recover. Notwithstanding his poor health he remained with his
regiment, which saw as hard service as any in the war, for three years never missing a day’s duty after
his recovery from this sickness and being the only man in his regiment who took active part in every one
of its battles. He took part in the following named engagements:
Big Bethel, Yorktown, Williamsburg, Hanover Court House, Fair Oaks, Chickahominy, Mechanicsville,
Gaines’ Hill, White Oak Swamp, Savage Station, Charles City cross road, Malvern Hill, Bull Run (second
battle), Antietam, Blockford’s Ford, Fredericksburg, Elles’ Ford, The Cedars, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg,
Wapping Height, Auborn, Kelly’s Ford, Locust Grove, Mine Run, Wilderness, Todd’s Tavern, Po River,
Spottsylvania, North Anna, Tolopoomoy, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Hare’s Farm, Jerusalem Plank Road,
Deep Bottom, Deep Run and Hatcher’s Run.

He has probably had as many narrow escapes as any man who helped to save his country. Three of his
tent-mates were shot dead at his side and three others were badly wounded. The ground consecrated
by the blood of the heroes of Gettysburg has five monuments erected in honor of his regiment led by

the undaunted Berdan, and here and there over that immortal field are stones, marking its position at
various stages of the fight, upon which are inscribed “Berdan’s Sharpshooters 200 yards ahead” and
other undisputed records of their valor upon those terrible days which decided the fates of the
contending sections. No Wonder Mr. Cook takes pride in the works of commendation received from his
superior officer, General Berdan, who, in a letter after the close of the war, wrote to him, “Your record is
perfect.” Mr. Cook was fourth in rank in his company being first sergeant, and had command of his
company at Petersburg and elsewhere. Of the 900 brave young men who went out with him only about
100 remained with the regiment until its discharge.

Upon his return from the army he was taken with western fever, but after spending a few months in
search of a better place than Michigan he gave it up as an impossibility. Here he has made a most
excellent home and is blessed with a loving and intelligent wife and children. Who will say that he is not
entitled to the peace and comfort with which his home is blessed? He is an ardent republican in politics
but would never take an office although often pressed to accept the highest honors of his town. He has
never identified himself with any church but is living a life of straightforward purity that cannot
displease Divinity.

Mr. Cook mentions a singular chain of coincidences in his family history. Eli Cook, his great-grandfather,
married Elizabeth and served throughout the war of the revolution; Eli Cook, his grandfather, married
Elizabeth and he served throughout the war of 1812, and he, with the ancestral name, married Elizabeth
and served, as before stated, throughout the war of the Rebellion.
