     Moses F. Holcombe was born on 6 January 1864 at Ionia Co., MI.¹ He was the son of Benoni Holcombe and Lucy A. Wedge. Moses F. Holcombe married Minnie A. Snyder on 22 February 1887 at Ionia, Ionia Co., MI.²

Moses and Minnie were enumerated in the 1930 Easton, Ionia Co., MI, federal census, ED 11. He was a farmer age 67; she was 62. Children in the household were Dey, 42, widowed, and his children, Jay B. 13, Reva 12, and Neva 11. Beulah was enumerated nearby in the household of aunt Neva Priscilla (Holcombe) Woodard (Mrs. Ora Woodard).

     Mary Ann Clifford married Jesse S. Holcombe, son of Benoni Holcombe and Lucy A. Wedge, in 1866. Mary Ann Clifford died in April 1936.

     Benoni E. Holcombe was born on 26 March 1867 at Ionia, Ionia Co., MI. He was the son of Jesse S. Holcombe and Mary Ann Clifford. Benoni E. Holcombe married Margaret Nellie Willis.¹ Benoni E. Holcombe died at Stanton, Montcalm Co., MI.²

     Samuel W. Holcombe was born on 12 July 1868 at Ionia Co., MI. He was the son of Jesse S. Holcombe and Mary Ann Clifford. Samuel W. Holcombe married (?) Unknown.¹ Samuel W. Holcombe died on 27 April 1934 at OR at age 65.¹

Samuel moved to Wyoming, to Colorado, to Minnesota, returning to Michigan and finally to Oregon. ²


It is possibly Samuel, with wife Cora, who was enumerated in the 1930 West Reedsport, Douglas Co., OR, federal census, district 60. He was a carpenter, age 62, she was 53. The only child in the household was son Kenneth C., age 6. Brother-in-law Fred R. Deering age 37 was also in the household.

     William H. Holcombe was born on 16 April 1870 at Ionia Co., MI. He was the son of Jesse S. Holcombe and Mary Ann Clifford. William H. Holcombe married Linna Case.

Moved to iron mines in Upper Mich peninsula and thence to Hibbing Minn., mining for 8 years until Jan 1, 1905, when he moved to the Canal Zone, Isthmus of Panama, working on the construction of the Panama Canal as a steam shovel operator until 1913, working the third steam power shovel in the Culebra Cut of the Canal. In his active and varied career he has formed unusual friendships in high official and business circles. ²

     Linna Case was born on 15 July 1875. She married William H. Holcombe, son of Jesse S. Holcombe and Mary Ann Clifford.

     Winnifred Holcombe was born on 26 March 1893 at Stanton, Montcalm Co., MI.¹ She was the daughter of William H. Holcombe and Linna Case. Winnifred Holcombe married Peter L. Pennock.² Winnifred Holcombe died in April 1979 at Stanton, Montcalm Co., MI, at age 86.¹

Peter was a veteran of the 1st World War, disabled from shell shock and gas. ³

     Died of influenza, age 20. Minnie Holcombe was born at Stanton, Montcalm Co., MI. She was the daughter of William H. Holcombe and Linna Case.

     Russell R. Holcombe was born on 27 September 1898 at Stanton, Montcalm Co., MI.¹ He was the son of William H. Holcombe and Linna Case. Russell R. Holcombe married Agnes Elizabeth Williams. Russell R. Holcombe died in November 1979 at Ionia, Ionia Co., MI, at age 81.¹

Russell and Agnes were enumerated in the 1930 Stanton, Montcalm Co., MI, federal census, district 33. They were living in the household of Agnes' mother, widow Jesse Williams. Russell was an electrician, age 30, she was 26. Children in the household were Loyd 5, and Shirley 1 year 6 months.

     Agnes Elizabeth Williams was born on 26 February 1905. She married Russell R. Holcombe, son of William H. Holcombe and Linna Case.

     Lloyd B. Holcombe was born on 6 June 1924.¹ He was the son of Russell R. Holcombe and Agnes Elizabeth Williams. Lloyd B. Holcombe died on 22 February 2007 at Byron Center, Kent Co., MI, at age 82.¹

Lloyd served in the Navy in the Second World War. ²

     Sarah S. Draper was born on 16 April 1861 at Allegan Co., MI. She was the daughter of John B. Draper and Carline Britain. Sarah S. Draper married William E. Holcombe, son of Benoni Holcombe and Lucy A. Wedge, on 18 March 1877 at Orleans, Ionia Co., MI. Sarah S. Draper died on 2 May 1910 at Stanton, Montcalm Co., MI, at age 49.

     John B. Draper married Carline Britain.

     Jesse Holcombe was born on 20 April 1882. He was the son of William E. Holcombe and Sarah S. Draper. Jesse Holcombe died in 1899.

     Lillian Holcombe was born on 15 December 1884. She was the daughter of William E. Holcombe and Sarah S. Draper.

Lillian was enumerated in the 1930 Stanton, Montcalm Co., MI, federal census, district 33. She was single, living alone, a 45 year old school teacher.


Her seniority in teaching service was equaled by few in Southern Michigan. ¹

     Blanche Holcombe was born on 28 April 1887. She was the daughter of William E. Holcombe and Sarah S. Draper.

     Viva Holcombe was born on 3 March 1894. She was the daughter of William E. Holcombe and Sarah S. Draper. Viva Holcombe married Clayton Barrows circa 1912.^1,2

Clayton and Viva were enumerated in the 1920 Douglass, Montcalm Co., MI, federal census, district 114. He was a farmer age 27, she was 25. Children in the household were Wesley 6, Cecil W. 3 years 4 months, and Robert L. 1 year 10 months.


Clayton and Viva were enumerated in the 1930 Dearborn, Wayne Co., MI, federal census, district 902. He was an inspector in the auto industry, age 38; she was 36. Children in the household, all born in MI, were Wesley 16, Wayne 13, Robert 12, and Bryce 9.

     Ella Holcombe was born on 15 October 1898. She was the daughter of William E. Holcombe and Sarah S. Draper.

     Evelyn Holcombe was born on 11 December 1901. She was the daughter of William E. Holcombe and Sarah S. Draper.

It was apparently Evelyn who was employed in a hotel run by William Cooper in the 1920 census of Home, Montcalm Co., MI, district 126.

     Minnie A. Snyder was born on 29 May 1858. She married Moses F. Holcombe, son of Benoni Holcombe and Lucy A. Wedge, on 22 February 1887 at Ionia, Ionia Co., MI.¹

     Day E. Holcombe was born on 26 February 1888.¹ He was the son of Moses F. Holcombe and Minnie A. Snyder. Day E. Holcombe married Nina G. Adams on 6 November 1913.¹

     Neva Priscilla Holcombe was born on 24 October 1892 at MI.^1,2 She was the daughter of Moses F. Holcombe and Minnie A. Snyder. Neva Priscilla Holcombe married Ora E. Woodard on 3 June 1920.³ Neva Priscilla Holcombe died in December 1975 at Orleans, Ionia Co., MI, at age 83.²

Ora and Neva were enumerated in the 1930 Easton, Ionia Co., MI, federal census, ED 11. He was a farm laborer, age 35, she was 37. The only child in the household was Earl, 8. Beulah Holcombe, Neva's neice, age 15, was also in the household.

     J. B. Holcombe was born on 7 April 1897. J. B. Holcombe was the child of Moses F. Holcombe and Minnie A. Snyder. J. B. Holcombe died on 10 February 1902 at age 4.

     Reva Marie Holcombe was born on 14 May 1917.¹ She was the daughter of Day E. Holcombe and Nina G. Adams.¹ Reva Marie Holcombe married Marion Munn on 30 January 1942 at Alexandria, LA.¹ Reva Marie Holcombe died in 1977.

Jesse confirmed a tradition remembered by Sanford P. Holcomb that there had been at least 5 Jesse Holcombs, each son of a Jesse. Jesse is recorded in the 1860 census of Ionia, MI, living with and working for James Post.

     Amanda Decker MD was born circa 1866. She married Ferris Holcombe, son of Jesse Holcombe II and Amorintha Kimball. Amanda Decker MD died in March 1935.

Amanda was a professor in Obstetrics in the Hering Medical College, chicago, who had taught after training in Normal School, Ypsilanti, MI, a pioneer woman in medicine, continuing the practice of medicine many years.

     William D. Holcombe MD was born on 23 September 1902 at Chicago, IL.² He was the son of Ferris Holcombe and Amanda Decker MD. William D. Holcombe MD died in April 1976 at Newberry, Luce Co., MI, at age 73.

Lived at 1619 S. Tejon St. Colorado Springs, Colorado when McPherson wrote her book in 1947. He graduated in 1928 from Teachers' College, Mt. Pleasant, Isabella Co., Mich; taught; received MD from the School of Medicine, Boston University, 1935; practiced 801 s. 15th St., Lincoln, Neb. and Colorado Springs; served in the CCC camps parts of three years after internship.

Frances served as therapetitic dietician at Herman Keifer Hospital, Detroit, Mich. and for six months at the Mass. General Hospital, Boston, where she did research and instructed student nurses and dieticians and similar work at Harvard Med. College.
