Ezra Holcombe1,2,3

b. circa 1735, d. 23 April 1813
Ezra Holcombe was born circa 1735 at possibly Simsbury (now Granby), Hartford Co., CT.4,5,6 He was the son of Lt. David Holcombe and Mehitable Buttolph. Ezra Holcombe married Phoebe Gillet, daughter of Nathaniel Gillette and Phebe (?), circa 1755 at possibly Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.7,8,9 Ezra Holcombe died on 23 April 1813 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.4,6 He was buried at Granby Center Cemetery, Granby, Hartford Co., CT.10,11

Served as a private in Capt. Buttolph's Co., which arrived at NY City Aug 18, 1776, where he was discharged Sept 25, 1776. Lived in a gambrel roofed house on the west road in Granby before moving to Granville, MA. 12

McPherson lists the death as 1811 in Granville, Hampden Co., MA. When did Ezra Sr. die? In his case, there are too many vital records, a rarity in this family. The Holcomb genealogy says he died in Granville in 1811. The First Church records in Granby have a date of 23 Apr 1813 and he would have been 78 years. The Granville, MA church records list the deaths of two Ezra Holcombs, one after 8 Dec 1809 (age 76 so born c.1733) and one after 23 Sept 1816. The date here has a strikeover and could be age 51, born 1765 or age 31, born 1785. The Granville Vital Records have Ezra dying of old age in 1809, age 76 and read the other Ezra as dying in 1816 age 81, born 1735. 7

The Granville VR for Ezra are taken from the church records, not gravestones, which did not have dates with the names and may not have been transcribed correctly. If we believe all these entries, at least three men named Ezra died within a few years. However, in that time period the only Ezra Holcombs in the area were Ezra and his son. The son moved to Granville, OH and died there. Ezra had his farm on both sides of the CT and MA boundary. I think he continued to attend the First Church in Granby. The death of his wife and his son Silas are in the First Church records. It is likely that the death of Ezra found in the First Church is correct. I can’t explain either the 1811 genealogy date or the two dates in the Granville Church records. There are other examples of Granville Church records differing widely from gravestones and other records. It seems safe to assume the Granville Church may be inaccurate. 7

The marriage date of Ezra and Phebe is not known, but it must be around 1755. Their first child was born in 1756 and they joined the church the same year. Many researchers are led astray about this marriage date by a court case Ezra was involved in concerning a will Phebe’s father, Nathaniel Gillet, signed 24 Apr 1773. Nathaniel signed everything to his son John for taking care of his parents until they died. In April 1781, Ezra Holcomb made a reciprocal agreement with John Gillet, assuming John’s parental responsibilities and receiving the benefits. Nathaniel Gillet agreed to this change. In return, Ezra signed his farm in Granby and Granville over to John Gillet. Another Gillet son persuaded his father Nathaniel to sign another will so Ezra went to court. At one point he testified that he was married to Phebe Gillet before 24 Apr 1773, to prove he was part of the family long before the will was written. That does not mean he married Phebe in 1773, which many researchers assumed, causing all sorts of problems with the children born before that date. The Holcomb genealogy omits the word “before” but the original document was researched and the genealogy is wrong. Ezra won the case. 7

Robert Eric Holcomb researched and privately published an extensive paper on Ezra and his descendants in September of 2015 titled The Holcombe Branch of James7 (Levi6, Ezra5, David4, Nathaniel3 2, Thomas1.)

Moved to Ft. Ann, Washington Co., NY, about 1810.7

There were three men named Levi Holcomb born around the same time and the genealogies have them confused. The First Congregational Church records refer to Levi Holcomb 1st, Levi Holcomb 2nd and sometimes just Levi Holcomb. The same is true in Granby Town Records. Unfortunately, there is no consistency. 5

The other two are Levi, son of David and Elizabeth Griffin Holcomb, and Levi, son of Joseph and Elizabeth Wilcox Holcomb.

Robertl Holcomb says: The following children along with their birth years and locations are based on Levi's census information of 1790, 1800, and 1810, along with his recorded land deeds; the possible first names and family details are only provided to aid in the search for primary documentation. Because Robert l does not have sufficient evidence to place Levi with the correct mother, he places a Levi under both WALLACE and POISSON. For the purposes of this web site we will accept McPherson's POISSON. The Levi Benjamin Holcombe that Robert Eric Holcombe places here is most likely the Levi, son of Levi (1806-1888) and his second wife, Sarah.

Levi Holcombe II1

b. between 1795 and 1800, d. after 1870
Levi Holcombe II was born between 1795 and 1800 at possibly Westfield, Washington Co., NY.2,3 He was the son of Levi Holcombe and Chloe Poisson.4 Levi Holcombe II married Hannah Marsh in November 1816 at Medina Co., OH. Levi Holcombe II died after 1870 at possibly Leavitt, Oceana Co., MI.3

There is some confusion as to whether this Levi belongs to this family, son of Levi and Chloe (Poisson) Holcombe, or to the family of Levi's other marriage to WALLACE.3 McPherson, page 131.2, doesn't even mention a marriage of his father to WALLACE, but assignes all children to Poisson.4

Levi Holcomb II, then 17 years old, was working on his father's farm, Ft. Ann, Washington Co., NY, when news of the British invasion in War of 1812 reached him and brothers. They hastened to enlist to repel the invaders. They were marksmen of skill and went into decisive action for the duration. No record of any application by him for US pension or bounty land was found when compiler made search. Both were available to him for his services.4

He endured the hardships and dangers of, at least, 5 frontier locations as a pioneer: Washington Co., NY, Medina and Erie counties, OH, Ionia and Oceana Counties, Michigan, the last when nearly 70 years old. Survival to his very advanced age is proof of his courage, skill and efficiency as a soldier, hunter, herdsman, horseman, farmer, live stockman, timberman and builder. 4

In Erie and Medina counties, Ohio, especially he met the challenge of packs of big grey wolves, riding horseback singly, armed only with a club. Herds of swine for himself and neighbors, fattening in woods from nuts from trees were rounded up and slaughtered by them, mounted and accompanied by dogs, trained to help capture the hogs. When enough had been slaughtered to stock their meat curing storage spaces for a family for a season, the wolves had been attracted to the scene. In transporting the meat home to storage wolves had to be fought by men and dogs en-route. Convoying this meat through wolf packs for considerable distances taxed the settlers' resourcefulness. He shot a panther in his meat house at night putting the muzzle of his gun through crack and using the shine of the animal's eyes as a target.4

Levi, riding home 2 miles from a neighbor's place at twilight heard wolves howling a summons for reinforcements to attack horse and rider and were soon snapping at his legs, the horse's throat, flanks and hamstrings. The force and aim of Levi's, while balancing himself on his racing horse disabled wolves as they came to attack until he and horse were safe at home.4

Levi settled at Florence, Erie Co., - near Sandusky, Ohio - before 1820, living just previously - and perhaps later, at Harrisville, Medina Co., Ohio, until probably about 1853 when he and his son, Porter, moved together to Ionia, Ionia Co., Michigan, where the families of both are recorded in the 1860 census as farmers.4

Levi joined his son, Porter Holcomb, and grandson, Perry Washington Holcomb in a final removal, - again as pioneers - to another frontier, Oceana Co., Michigan between 1865 and 1870 where they entered land and were settled in the recording of the 1870 census of Levett, Oceana Co., Michigan.4

When Levi and Hannah were married, it required several days trip by a friend of theirs to locate and obtain an official qualified to solemnize the marriage, a Magistrate being brought from Coventry. 4

It is perhaps Levi who was enumerated in the 1860 Ionia, Ionia Co., MI, federal census, page 87, near son Porter. He was 64. The wife's name was Laura, age 61. Also in the household were Elizabeth Reed age 29, and Francis Reed, age 4.

Levi II died in the 1870's at age 83-87 years.
