Oliver Cooley1

b. April 1772
The tone of the Cooley Genealogy here indicates that they do not have proof of Oliver's wives and children, but believe the connection with the quoted material because of a match of places and dates. It is quoted here verbatum.

It is believed that the following, taken from The History of Deerfield (Mass.), by George Sheldon, No. 97, Chapter XXIII, refers to this Oliver Cooley.

Oliver Cooley, b. about 1760, place unknown, a trader and innkeeper of Deerfield, Mass., from Ber. (abbreviation not known) 1806, when he bought the old tavern lot on No. 20. Storekeeper on south part of the same No. in a shop in front of the Selah Barnard tavern; now lean-to in the rear (date of book's pub. not known). He m. (pub) May 25, 1794, Greenfield, Mass. (Vital Records) Jemima Wells, da. Abner; she d. June 5, 1820, ae. 44; he m. (2) pub. Apr. 25, 1823, Hannah, da. Eliakim Field, wid. Samuel Grimes of Whately; children Harriet, Rodney, Charlotte Augusta, Lucinda, George, Mary.

The Cooley Genealogy further notes that the dates for the children were taken from Deerfield Vital Records; names as children of Oliver taken from Sheldon.

Noah Cooley1

b. 2 April 1792, d. 30 August 1843
     From the Cooley Genealogy:

In the Granville Jubilee of 1845 appears the following: 'The lamented Noah Cooley, Esq., was a self-made man. His sun went down while it was yet noon. He left a valuable patrimony to his orphan and amiable children, and, what is better than wealth, the legacy of an unblemished reputation.' Noah Cooley was born on 2 April 1792 at "Missing Place" no. 6410. He was the son of George Cooley II and Abi Jones. Noah Cooley married Sophronia Parsons, daughter of Josel Parsons and Phoebe (?), on 16 August 1819 at Granville, Hampden Co., MA. Levi Cooley1

The Cooley Genealogy had doubts about the ancestry of this Levi and said:

According to a memorandum taken by M. E. Cooley in Granville, Mass., in 1885, George Cooley, "not related to the other Cooleys in Granville" (who were mostly descendants of Daniel Cooley I), had: Deacon Levi, a farmer who lived in Granville; George, who 'went West and was a Mason by trade'; Noah, a merchant in West Granville, who had a son named Francis (a banker in Hartford), and othe rchildren. This memorandum coincides with the known facts regarding George III and Noah, sons of George II, and is the only clue to the identity of 'Deacon Levi Cooley,' who lived in Granville and whose records are found in the Granville Vital and Cemetery Records. In the old Granville cemetery, a group of Cooley graves includes Hannah, da. Capt. Richard and Rebekah Dickinson, and Louden, son of Capt. Richard and Mrs. Rebekah Dickinson. The inference is that Capt. Richard and Rebekah were the parents of Rebekah Dickinson who married Deacon Levi Cooley. In this same group of graves are Rebekah Cooley, Lt. Levi Cooley, son of Deacon Levi Cooley, Rebekah, wife of Deacon Levi; and Abi, relict of George, Capt. George and Harriet, da. George Cooley (thus indicating a close relationship between Capt. George and Abi (Jones) Cooley and Deacon Levi Cooley); also Mirilla Cooley, Melissa Cooley, and other children of Deacon Levi and Rebekah (Dickinson) Cooley. Until further information can be obtained, it may be assumed that Deacon Levi Coley was the son of George II and Abi (Jones) Cooley, No. 533. The date and place of his birth and death are not known; neither is recorded in the vital statistics of Somers, Conn., or of Granville.

The Cooley Genealogy then lists verbatum the stones in the Old Grave Yard, East Granville.

Apparently Deacon Levi Cooley left Granville after his second marriage. No births of children are recorded in Granville, but deaths are recorded. No members of his family by his first wife survived the spotted fever epidemic of 1812, except Levi S. who d. aged 26, prob. unm. Deacon Levi Cooley prob. had other children by his second marriage.

Children's dates are from Granville Cemetery Records and Vital Records; all are buried in Granville. Levi Cooley was the son of George Cooley II and Abi Jones. Levi Cooley married Rebecca Dickinson on 7 November 1795 at Granville, Hampden Co., MA.
