     Stephen William Sexton was born on 11 June 1869 at Chicago, Cook Co., IL.¹ He was the son of James Andrew Sexton and Laura Louisa Woods.¹

     Gladys M. (?) was born on 18 January 1910. She married Maj. Freeborn Page Holcombe II, son of LtCol. Freeborn Page Holcombe and Cliffe Van Lue Mumma. Gladys M. (?) died on 19 April 1992 at age 82. She was buried at Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, San Mateo Co., CA; section CA site 585.

     Samuel Phelps Jr. was born circa 1746 at probably Poquonock, Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Samuel Phelps and Marcy Moore.^1,2 Samuel Phelps Jr. married Freelove (?)¹ Samuel Phelps Jr. died before 1805.¹

     Dorothy Emma Howell was born on 4 June 1919 at Edgewater Hospital, Chicago, Cook Co., IL.¹ She was the daughter of Edwin John Howell Jr. and Della Murray.¹ Dorothy Emma Howell married Hugh Ellsworth Rodham, son of Hugh Simpson Rodham and Hannah Jones, in 1942.¹ Dorothy Emma Howell died on 1 November 2011 at Washington, DC, at age 92.

     Hannah Jones was born in April 1882 at PA.² She was the daughter of William Jones and Mary A. Griffiths.³ Hannah Jones married Hugh Simpson Rodham, son of Jonathan Rodham and Isabella Simpson Bell, on 30 May 1902.¹ Hannah Jones died in 1952.¹

Megan Smolenyak’s recent research into Hillary’s ancestry found that many published trees have incorrectly identified her grandmother, Hannah Jones. THIS IS THE CORRECT HANNAH. There were two girls named Hannah Jones born in Scranton, PA, circa 1882-1883 and the wrong one had often been incorrectly selected. Hugh Simpson Rodham had eloped with Hannah Jones to Binghampton, New York on Memorial Day, May 30, 1902. Binghampton was the “Gretna Green” of its day where love sick couples from over the border in Pennsylvania could go to marry without as many restrictions. There was only a brief announcement in the Scranton Tribune Times that said “Miss Anna Jones, of Brick avenue, was quietly wedded to Hugh Rodham, of Park place, at Binghamton, Memorial Day. Mr. and Mrs. Roddham will make their residence with the bride’s parents on Brick avenue.”Mary, married but with her husband nowhere in sight was enumerated in the 1900 Scranton Ward1, Lackawanna Co., PA, federal census living on Brick Ave. She was born in February 1850 in Wales; she had given birth to 14 children but only 4 had survived; they were renting. Children in the household were Annie 18, Reese 30, and David 13.³

     Dudley Case was born on 4 July 1800.¹ He was the son of Ozias Case and Mary Hill.¹

     Della Murray was born on 17 June 1902 at Aurora, DuPage Co., IL.¹ She was the daughter of Daniel Murray and Delia Martin.¹ Della Murray married Edwin John Howell Jr., son of Edwin John Howell and Emma Josephine Monk, in 1918.¹ Della Murray and Edwin John Howell Jr. were divorced circa 1926.¹ Della Murray died on 25 March 1960 at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, Dade Co., FL, at age 57.¹

     George Washington Case was born on 27 April 1791.¹ He was the son of Ozias Case and Mary Hill.¹ George Washington Case died in 1841.¹

     Emma Josephine Monk was born on 29 November 1874 at Canada.¹ She married Edwin John Howell, son of Edwin Howell and Jane Sophia Babb, on 30 December 1894 at Kane Co., IL.¹ Emma Josephine Monk died on 21 December 1940 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA, at age 66.¹

     Ensign Samuel Phelps was born on 16 January 1698 at Poquonock, Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Capt. Josiah Phelps and Sarah Winchell.¹ Ensign Samuel Phelps married Rachel Owen on 28 August 1713 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.² Ensign Samuel Phelps died in 1753 at Hartland, Hartford Co., CT.¹

     Jane Sophia Babb was born in 1844 at Bristol, Co. Gloucester, England.¹ She married Edwin Howell in 1864 at Bristol, Co. Gloucester, England.¹

     Oliver Phelps was born on 12 August 1767 at probably Poquonock, Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Samuel Phelps and Ruth Granger.^1,2 Oliver Phelps died on 28 October 1859 at age 92.¹

     Isabella Simpson Bell was born on 24 September 1849 at Annfield Plain, Kyo, Co. Durham, England.¹ She married Jonathan Rodham on 31 December 1867 at Durham, Co. Durham, England.¹ Isabella Simpson Bell died on 16 May 1917 at age 67.¹ She was buried at Chinchilla Cemetery, Scranton, PA.¹

     Samuel Phelps was born on 30 December 1716 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.² He was the son of Ensign Samuel Phelps and Rachel Owen.^3,1 Samuel Phelps married Marcy Moore, daughter of William Moore and Elizabeth Case, on 11 June 1739 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.⁴ Samuel Phelps married Ruth Granger.^4,5

Jonathan and Isabella S. were enumerated in the 1900 Scranton, Lackawanna Co., PA, federal census. He was a policeman, age 56, she was 50. Jonathan had immigrated in 1881, Isabella and the children in 1882. Children in the household were Margaret 29, Joseph 25, William R. 24, Hugh 20, Elizabeth 18, Robert B. 16, Wade 14, Ethel 12, and George B. 10. Isabella had 13 children, 11 still living.

     Mary (?) was born in May 1839 at Wales, England.¹ She married John Jones.¹ Mary (?) died before 1910.¹

John and Mary have frequently been misidentified as the parents of Hannah Jones, the grandmother of Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton. They remain documented here to prevent later researchers from making the same error.

     Kyra Minturn Sedgwick was born on 19 August 1965 at New York City, New York Co., NY. She was the daughter of Henry Dwight Sedgwick V and Patricia Rosenwald. Kyra Minturn Sedgwick married Kevin Norwood Bacon, son of Edmund Norwood Bacon and Ruth Hilda Holmes, on 4 September 1988.

     Patricia Rosenwald married Henry Dwight Sedgwick V, son of Robert Minturn Sedgwick and Helen Peabody.

     Hugh Ellsworth Rodham was born on 2 April 1911 at Scranton, PA.¹ He was the son of Hugh Simpson Rodham and Hannah Jones.¹ Hugh Ellsworth Rodham married Dorothy Emma Howell, daughter of Edwin John Howell Jr. and Della Murray, in 1942.¹ Hugh Ellsworth Rodham died on 7 April 1993 at Little Rock, Pulaski Co., AR, at age 82.¹ He was buried at Washburn Street Cemetery, Scranton, PA.¹

He was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the son of Hugh Rodham and Hannah Jones. His father was English, an immigrant from County Durham, while his mother was born in Pennsylvania, to Welsh immigrant parents; both were descended from lines of coal miners
Rodham attended Pennsylvania State University and was a third-string tight end for the Penn State Nittany Lions football team. He joined the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from the College of Education in 1935, at the height of the Great Depression.

He briefly worked for his father's employer, Scranton Lace Company, then freighthopped to Chicago without telling his parents. Rodham found work there selling drapery fabrics around the Midwest, sending the money he made back home.

In 1937, while Rodham was making a sales call at a textile company, he met Dorothy Emma Howell (1919-2011), who was applying for a job at that company. After a lengthy courtship, they married in early 1942. Rodham enlisted in the United States Navy, where he became a Chief Petty Officer stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Station, performing training duties for sailors headed for the Pacific Ocean theater of World War II.

After the war, he began what was to prove to be a very successful career in the textile supply industry, starting with Rodrik Fabrics, a drapery fabric business located in Chicago's famous Merchandise Mart building. His company made drapes and window shades; his customers included offices, hotels, airlines, and theaters. He later opened a fabric print plant building on the North Side. Rodham tried politics once, running for Chicago alderman as an independent in 1947; he lost badly to the Richard J. Daley political machine with which he was hoping to ingratiate himself.

The Rodhams had three children: Hillary (born 1947), Hugh (born 1950), and Tony (born 1954). In 1950, they moved to the more affluent Chicago suburb of Park Ridge, Illinois. The family still maintained ties to Scranton; all three children were christened there, and they spent summers at a cottage overlooking Lake Winola, located in Overfield Township in the nearby Pennsylvania Pocono Mountains, that he and his father had built themselves in 1921.

Rodham was a staunch supporter of Barry Goldwater's 1964 presidential campaign and remained a committed Republican until his death. Even after his daughter married Democrat Bill Clinton, he (according to Bill Clinton) "never gave up hope that his son-in-law would join him in the Republican Party and support a cut in the capital gains tax." In late 1992, following Bill Clinton's election as president, Rodham made a cameo appearance on the television comedy Hearts Afire, whose producers were friends of the Clintons.

Hugh Rodham died in Little Rock, Arkansas, on April 7, 1993, three weeks after suffering a stroke and less than three months after Bill Clinton's inauguration as U.S. president. Following a private memorial service in Little Rock attended by the Clintons, he was buried in the Washburn Street Cemetery, Scranton, Pennsylvania, in a private funeral also attended by the Clinton family.
