Carlos farmed in Hartsgrove at least through 1850. No further information has been found.¹

Carlos and Phebe were enumerated in the 1850 Hartsgrove, Ashtabula Co., OH, federal census, dwelling 1149, family 1186. He was a farmer age 34, born in Ohio, she was 34, born in NY. The only child in the household was Angeline age 9.

Carlos and Jane were enumerated in the 1860 Oxford, Marquette Co., WI, federal census. He was a Methodist Minister, age 44, she was 43. The only child in the household was Wesley, 9, born in OH.

C.B. Holcomb and Mariah were enumerated in the 1880 Ironton, Sauk Co., WI, federal census. He was a minister age 62, she was 57. There were no children in the household.

     Merritt Holcombe was born on 19 June 1821 at Hartsgrove, Ashtabula Co., OH.^1,2 He was the son of Caleb Holcombe and Abigail Norris.¹ Merritt Holcombe married Sophia J. Sergeant on 22 October 1849.¹ Merritt Holcombe died on 16 March 1903 at Trumbull Twp., Ashtabula Co., OH, at age 81.¹

THE LATE MERIT HOLCOMB

A Widely Known Resident of Hartsgrove

Merit Holcomb was born in Windsor, O., June 19, 1821, and died in Trumbull, O., March 16, 1903, being 81 years, 8 months, 20 days old. He was one of thirteen children. His father, Caleb and mother,Abigail Norris Holcomb, who afterwards moved onto the farm now owned by a nephew of the deceased, Eugene Somers, where the aged parents died a few years ago. The brothers and sisters have all passed over the river of death, save Edison Holcomb, of Jefferson, O., who is in very feeble health.

When Merit was 28 years of age on the twenty-second day of October, 1849, he was united in marriage to Miss Sophia J. Sargent, a very exemplary young lady of a fine christian character. The ceremony was performed by General Charles Stearns, who lived in the residence now occupied by Frank Parker at the Center of Hartsgrove. They soon moved onto the farm in South Trumbull, O., where both spent 52 years of hard laborious, yet a happy, peaceful life, clearing up the forest as they owned and operated a saw mill. Many buildings are covered with shingles shaved from hemlock by Uncle Merit as we all called him.

Uncle Merit was a firm, ardent bible student, having embraced the old primitive christianity of Christ time as set forth by the Campbells, now known as the Church of Christ. He was a profound thinker and reader often reading the bible through several times a year. He spent over twenty years of hard study on the book of Job having declared and set forth the book to be a true biography of the life of Job instead as some believe it to be a book of fiction.

Many are the bible scholars of Uncle Merit scattered all over he United Sates, as he was a teacher in the Hartsgrove Sunday schools for nearly fifty years, being the oldest elder of Hartsgrove Church of Christ at his death.

Elder Holcomb was strictly temperate in all things which accounts for his splendid physique and power of endurance. He could and did up to within a short time of his death do as much work as the average young man of the hour. And as we sat there during the weary hours of the night watching the soul take his departure from this earthly tabernacle through the mist of tears feel that a fatherly friend, a kind neighbor, a true citizen, passed from us into eternity, as the life blood was fast ebbing away to hear him say “I am ready to go, meet me in heaven.” The radiant smile that rested upon his face long after the soul had gone to its maker, indicated to us left behind, he was happy to die in the Lord Jesus Christ and met death boldly.

The roads were in such a condition that the minister from Ashtabula failed to reach Trumbull, and Prof. D. M. Webb of Trumbull Center gave a very appropriate discourse, after reading 1 Cor. 15 and 22nd chapter of Revelations the latter chapter Elder Holcomb repeated by heart to his grandson, Clarkson Main, the day before he died.

Elder Holcomb was placed in the vault at Trumbull, where as soon as the roads will permit and Elder Frank Wright, who was a personal friend of Elder Holcomb can come to give an eulogizing sermon on both Elder Holcomb and his wife who passed two months ahead of him to the better land. The Nye family furnished very touching songs.

     Susannah Holcombe was born circa 1825 at Hartsgrove, Ashtabula Co., OH.^1,2 She was the daughter of Caleb Holcombe and Abigail Norris.¹

     Mahala Holcombe was born circa 1827 at Hartsgrove, Ashtabula Co., OH.^1,2 She was the daughter of Caleb Holcombe and Abigail Norris. Mahala Holcombe married Seth G. Hill.¹ Mahala Holcombe died on 14 December 1871 at Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH.¹

Seth was a peddler, then a farmer. Mahala bore no children.¹

     William Holcombe was born circa 1834 at Hartsgrove, Ashtabula Co., OH.^1,2 He was the son of Caleb Holcombe and Abigail Norris.¹ William Holcombe died circa 1853.

     Hezekiah Skinner was born say 1792 at Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH.¹ He married Laura Moore, daughter of Amassa Moore and Mercy Holcombe, on 27 November 1817.¹ Hezekiah Skinner died after 1 June 1860.¹

     Hamilton G. Skinner was born say 1828 at Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH.¹ He was the son of Hezekiah Skinner and Laura Moore.

     Ackland H. Skinner was born say 1834 at Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH.¹ He was the son of Hezekiah Skinner and Laura Moore. Ackland H. Skinner married Julia A. Knapp on 28 September 1861.¹

Ackland was enumerated as a miller and merchant in Windsor, OH, in the 1850 census. He was also listed in the 1900 census. Only three children survived four biths by Julia.¹

     Larissa C. Skinner was born say 1831 at Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH.¹ She was the daughter of Hezekiah Skinner and Laura Moore.

Larissa lived with her mother, Laura, through 1870 before marrying.¹

     Caroline J. Palmer was born say 1824 at NY. She married Timothy Jerome Alderman, son of Timothy Alderman II and Mercy Holcombe, on 5 March 1843.¹ Caroline J. Palmer died on 24 June 1850.²

     Pauline Pease was born say 1821.¹ She married Timothy Jerome Alderman, son of Timothy Alderman II and Mercy Holcombe, on 8 October 1851.^1,2

     Cassius Marcellus Alderman was born in March 1844 at Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH.¹ He was the son of Timothy Jerome Alderman and Caroline J. Palmer. Cassius Marcellus Alderman married Lavilla L. Skinner say 1867.¹ Cassius Marcellus Alderman died after 15 April 1910.

C. Marcellus and Lavilla were enumerated in the 1880 Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH, federal census, page 16. He was a farmer, age 36, she was 34. Children in the household were Clyde 9, and Lee 6.

Cassius and Lavilla were enumerated in the 1900 Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH, census with Clyde and Lee. Clyde's family was also enumerated in Cassius' household.

Cassius and Lavila were enumerated in the 1910 Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH, census on 15 April. Clyde and Lee were in the household along with Clyde's wife and two children.

     Lucy J. Alderman was born say 1845 at Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH.¹ She was the daughter of Timothy Jerome Alderman and Caroline J. Palmer.

     Louise D. Alderman was born on 25 November 1854 at Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH.^1,2,3 She was the daughter of Timothy Jerome Alderman and Pauline Pease.¹ Louise D. Alderman died on 18 March 1914 at age 59.³

     Emma Alderman was born on 11 February 1858 at Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH.^1,2 She was the daughter of Timothy Jerome Alderman and Pauline Pease.¹ Emma Alderman died on 12 December 1886 at age 28.³

     Gilbert Grover was born say 1814 at Windsor, Ashtabula Co., OH.¹ He married Mercy Selina Alderman, daughter of Timothy Alderman II and Mercy Holcombe, on 21 June 1837.¹ Gilbert Grover died on 5 March 1894.¹

     Corydon Timothy Grover was born on 5 December 1840 at Hartsgrove, Ashtabula Co., OH.¹ He was the son of Gilbert Grover and Mercy Selina Alderman.¹ Corydon Timothy Grover died on 22 March 1908 at Orwell, Ashtabula Co., OH, at age 67.¹

Corydon was a practicing physician in 1870.¹

     Luellen Selina Grover was born on 31 December 1849 at Hartsgrove, Ashtabula Co., OH.¹ She was the daughter of Gilbert Grover and Mercy Selina Alderman.¹ Luellen Selina Grover married Thomas A. McElroy on 6 January 1876.¹

Both Thomas and Luellen were recorded in the 1910 census.¹

     Livonia G. Grover was born in 1855 at Hartsgrove, Ashtabula Co., OH.^1,2 She was the daughter of Gilbert Grover and Mercy Selina Alderman.¹ Livonia G. Grover died on 1 February 1884 at Hartsgrove, Ashtabula Co., OH.¹

     John Sylvester Grover was born in 1858.^1,2 He was the son of Gilbert Grover and Mercy Selina Alderman.¹ John Sylvester Grover died in 1867.

Had Been a Resident of That Place For Over Fifty Years

Geneva, Jan. 12--On Friday night at Trumbull Center occurred the death of Mrs. S. J. Holcomb, who for the past 50 years had been a resident of that place. Mrs.
Holcomb was born in Massachusetts 72 years ago, and at the age of 20 came to the Western Reserve. For the past seven years she had been suffering with the infirmities which old age brings with it, and when death came it brought welcome relief. She is survived by her aged husband, who deeply mourns the loss.

The funeral services were conducted at the Disciple church in Trumbull, burial was made in the cemetery near there.

The funeral of Mrs. Merritt Holcomb, who died Friday, was held at the Church of Christ Monday, Rev.Tisdel of Buffalo officiating. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mesdames H. F. Nye and J. A.McFarland, and Messrs. H. F. and Ford Nye. Mrs. Holcomb was numbered among Trumbull’s oldest settlers, was 72 years of age, and had been in very poor health for some time.

     Adelaide Abigail Holcombe was born on 25 July 1853 at Hartsgrove, Ashtabula Co., OH.^1,2 She was the daughter of Edson Greenlief Holcombe and Mary Helen Bulfinch.¹ Adelaide Abigail Holcombe married George Washington Stevens on 31 January 1874 at Ashtabula, Ashtabula Co., OH.² Adelaide Abigail Holcombe died on 30 May 1946 at Ashtabula, Ashtabula Co., OH, at age 92.² She was buried at Edgewood Cemetery, Ashtabula, Ashtabula Co., OH.²

George W. and Addie A. were enumerated in the 1910 Sheffield, Ashtabula Co., OH, federal census. He was a farmer age 60, she was 57. Children in the household were Edison 19, Leon 16, and William 14.

George W. and Adelaide were enumerated in the 1920 Youngstown, Mahoning Co., OH, federal census. He was a street car laborer, age 69, she was 66. Children in the household were Edson, 28, Arthur 41, and daughter-in-law Eula 31.

Addie A. was enumerated in the 1930 Ashtabula, Ashtabula Co., OH, federal census in the household of son Timothy W. Stevens. She was widowed, age 76.

SONS PALLBEARERS FOR MRS. STEVENS

Funeral services for Mrs. Addie Holcomb Stevens, 92, who died Thursday at the home of her son, Timothy, 5823 West Ave., were held Saturday at Ducro Funeral Chapel. Rev. H. S. Smith of Church of Christ officiated. Mrs. Frances Goodell and Goldie Hart sang “Some Glad Sweet Day”. There were many floral offerings. Interment was made in Edgewood Cemetery. Pallbearers were the six sons of Mrs. Stevens: Perry, Norris, Edson, Arthur, Leon and Timothy.
