NORWICH — Floyd R. "Dick" Burhans, 86, of Golden Age Apartments, Norwich, passed away Friday morning, May 13, 2005, at Chenango Memorial Hospital. The son of William and Ethel (Holcomb) Burhans, Dick was born in Catskill on Sept. 16, 1918. His mother passed away when he was a young boy. Dick was raised by his father and stepmother, Mildred Holcomb Burhans, who was his mother’s sister. Dick grew up in the Windham area, where he attended the local schools. He married Elinor M. Davidson on April 25, 1953, in Oneonta.Dick was a 25-year employee of NYSEG, having started his career as a meter reader. He worked in Stamford, Walton, Oneonta, and Norwich, and while in Norwich he was chief of the garage. He retired at the age of 62. Considered a wonderful husband, father, grandpa, and great- grandpa, Dick always enjoyed his family. He was a hard worker but enjoyed kidding around with family and friends. He was also a diehard Yankee fan. Dick is survived by his daughter, Diane Lamb, of Norwich; his son, William Burhans and wife Jackie of Memphis, Tenn; his grandchildren, Brian and Stacey Burhans of Memphis and Jeffrey Lamb of Norwich; and one great-grandchild, Cade. Also surviving are his sisters, Elizabeth Herdman of Kingston and Margaret Daum of Clinton, Conn., along with several nieces and nephews. Dick was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Elinor Burhans; and by his three brothers, Robert, Charles Stanley, and William Burhans. Funeral services for Dick will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, at the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Rebekah Sweet, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church, will officiate.Interment will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery of Oneonta.Friends may call from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the R. Born to Donovan and Ruth Brockett (nee Beach) on March 24, 1930, she peacefully passed away on September 23, 2022, surrounded by family.
Growing up in Windham with her father and paternal grandparents Mary spent her summers working at Crest Park, traveling to NYC with her father and visiting family in Connecticut.
Mary wed Leslie S. Holcomb in February 1948, and moved to Schenectady for a short time but returned to her childhood home on Main Street to raise her family where she lived until 2008.
Mary worked at various local businesses after her children were grown.
With her love of books and reading she especially enjoyed working for the Windham Public Library for many years.
Mary is predeceased by her husband Les of 57 years and survived by her 6 children Carolyn Snow, Donny Holcomb, Susan Sutton, Alan Holcomb, Sandy Smith, Sherri Miltenberger 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be with family at a later time.
