     Nehemiah Patch was born circa 1740 at MA. He married Lydia Butler, daughter of Eleazer Butler and Lydia Durkee, on 3 June 1779 at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. Nehemiah Patch died in 1781 at at sea.

Nehemiah was a Yarmouth sea captain who died in a shipwreck at Seal Island, Nova Scotia.

Earning a living as a mariner and fishermen, Patch observed the efficiency of small boats propelled by single oar sculling and began to experiment with a propeller based in the motions of a sculling oar. During the winter of 1832-1833 he built a hand-cranked version of a doubled-bladed fan-shaped propeller. He demonstrated his propeller during the summer of 1833 before crowds watching as his small boat moved, seemingly magically, across Yarmouth Harbour. Patch further experimented by attaching his invention to a 25-ton coastal schooner named Royal George in the Bay of Fundy. The propeller allowed Royal George to enter Saint John Harbour in a calm which stranded other sailing vessels. Patch's invention was 4 years before John Ericsson's famous patent on the screw propeller in Britain. Patch lacked the funds to travel to Britain for a patent but instead tried to patent his propeller in the United States in 1832. However his application was refused as he was not an American citizen. Patch continued to improve his propeller and when American laws changed to permit patents by non-citizens, he received an American patent in 1849. Patch's propeller received some recognition, including praise for its efficiency in Scientific American magazine.However, by 1849 there were multiple competing versions of the screw propeller in Europe and America. Patch never received money or recognition.


A petition by Yarmouth citizens to reward his innovation with a pension from the Nova Scotia government in the 1858 was unsuccessful and he died a poor man at Yarmouth in 1861.

Although Patch's invention was well documented at the time, his invention was overlooked amidst the many developers of the screw propeller and he has received few tributes. His invention is presented at an exhibit at the Yarmouth County Museum & Archives and a propeller-driven lifeboat in the collection of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax, Nova Scotia is named in his honour. The Propeller Brewing Company in Halifax have promoted John Patch as their mascot and a Pubnicosongwriter named Vince d'Entrement wrote a ballad about Patch.

     Matilda Griffith was born on 30 August 1861 at OH. She married David Harvey Phelps, son of Andrew Jackson Phelps, on 14 November 1882 at Jackson, OH. Matilda Griffith died on 17 November 1946 at OH at age 85.

     Alfred Phelps was born on 28 April 1885 at Coaltown, OH. He was the son of David Harvey Phelps and Matilda Griffith. Alfred Phelps married Vera Humphreys on 7 September 1907 at Alleghany, VA. Alfred Phelps died on 2 April 1941 at Clarksburg, Webster Co., WV, at age 55.

     Vera Humphreys was born on 15 August 1885 at Clintonville, Greenbrier Co., WV. She married Alfred Phelps, son of David Harvey Phelps and Matilda Griffith, on 7 September 1907 at Alleghany, VA. Vera Humphreys died on 9 November 1976 at age 91.

     John William Phelps was born on 24 December 1915 at Bluefield, Mercer Co., WV. He was the son of Alfred Phelps and Vera Humphreys. John William Phelps married Roberta Marie Myers on 28 March 1945 at WV. John William Phelps died on 12 February 1959 at Keyser, Mineral Co., WV, at age 43.

Francis J. "Jack" Alderman, 90, of Suffield, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at Hartford Hospital. Born August 27, 1930 in New Hartford, CT the son of the late Francis R. and Adeline (Burford) Alderman, he lived in West Suffield until he joined the US Navy in 1947. In 1951, he married the late Elizabeth Osgood in Sunapee, NH. He served his country until 1957. After his discharge from the military, he worked for UPS in the Springfield Terminal until he and his family moved to Maine where he worked as a logger. In 1985, he came back to West Suffield, working as a truck driver until his retirement. Jack was a Bruins and Red Sox fan, he coached his boys in hockey when they were young, he enjoyed waterskiing and camping and most of all spending time with family and friends. Jack is survived by two children, Rodney Alderman and his wife Denise of Sidney, ME, and Cheryl Alderman of East Windsor; a brother, Wilfred "Tony" Alderman, and his wife Alice of Suffield; a sister, Louise Wilesky of Windsor Locks; six grandchildren, Randi-Lynn Alderman, Brittany McDaniel, Charlene Geer, Braden Alderman, Jack Alderman, Dale Boyce and his wife, Hope; four great grandchildren, Collin, Braxton, Alexis, and Madelyn, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 35 years, Elizabeth Osgood; a son, Randy Alderman; a sister, Dorothy Alderman and a brother, Melvin Alderman. A graveside service with military honors will be held Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at 10:00 AM in West Suffield Cemetery, West Suffield, CT.      Sally G. Johnson was born on 11 July 1782 at Middletown, Middlesex Co., CT. She married Samuel Holcombe, son of Timothy Holcombe and Elizabeth Griffin, on 5 February 1795 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. Sally G. Johnson died in 1819 at Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH.

     Hannah Holcombe was born on 15 September 1795 at VA.¹ She was the daughter of Samuel Holcombe and Sally G. Johnson.¹ Hannah Holcombe married John Airy on 3 December 1818 at Greenbrier Co., VA (now WV). Hannah Holcombe died on 1 April 1890 at Greenbrier Co., WV, at age 94.¹

     John Airy was born in 1797 at Greenbrier Co., VA (now WV). He married Hannah Holcombe, daughter of Samuel Holcombe and Sally G. Johnson, on 3 December 1818 at Greenbrier Co., VA (now WV). John Airy died before 1834 at Greenbrier Co., VA (now WV).

     Sarah Jane Genise was born on 7 March 1856 at AL. She married Jarvin M. Holcombe, son of Jarvin Holcombe and Candace Delong, in 1876. Sarah Jane Genise died on 1 January 1929 at Madisonville, Madison Co., TX, at age 72.

     Samuel Airy was born in 1819 at Greenbrier Co., VA (now WV). He was the son of John Airy and Hannah Holcombe. Samuel Airy died on 12 January 1896 at Greenbrier Co., WV.

     Frances Mahala Horton was born on 17 November 1887 at Madisonville, Madison Co., TX. She married Roert Lee Holcombe, son of Jarvin M. Holcombe and Sarah Jane Genise, on 12 July 1901 at Madison Co., TX. Frances Mahala Horton died on 4 July 1968 at Channelview, Harris Co., TX, at age 80.
