Apparently he was listed as a deserter. However, legal applications filed in Onondaga County, NY, in 1889 by Andrew were to remove the charge of desertion. Andrew J. Cook was born circa 20 December 1827 at "Missing Place" no. 5164. He was the son of Joseph Cook and Elizabeth Burr. Andrew J. Cook married Harriet Amelia Holcombe, daughter of Friend Holcombe and Susan Serepta Beach, on 25 December 1854 at "Missing Place" no. 5164. Andrew J. Cook died on 15 July 1908 at Camillus, NY. James Foote Holcombe1
b. 20 January 1837, d. 9 September 1920
James Foote Holcombe was born on 20 January 1837 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of James Holly Holcombe and Mary Foote. James Foote Holcombe married Helen Harriet House on 28 June 1866 at Vinton, IA. James Foote Holcombe died on 9 September 1920 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA, at age 83.2
From the Annual of Washington and Jefferson College for 1883:
James' parents were both religious, and at their house, family worship was regularly maintained, and lessons in the Westminster Shorter Catechism were frequently learned and recited. Owing to his early training, our classmate, for some time after he entered college, kept up the practice of reciting the Catechism every Sabbath, and induced fellow-students to unite with him in the exercise, although he was not then a Christian. His father was brought up on a farm, but spent most of his life as a merchant in Ohio, and he was noted for his interest in foreign missions. While going to school at Canfield, Ohio, James assisted his father in his business. That he might be more useful, he was sent, at the age of 15, to the Presbyterial Academy at Poland, Ohio, to qualify himself for business pursuits, for which he showed a fondness. In the Fall of 1853, some of his companions went to Jefferson College, and he asked and obtained permission from his parents to accompany them, though he had no idea of taking a regular course. By the illness of his father, he was detained at home one year. While at college, he was converted and made a profession of his faith in Christ. After the completion of his collegiate course, he entered the Western Theological Seminary at Allegheny, in the Fall of 1858. He was licensed to preach in 1860; graduated in theology in 1861; and was ordained in 1866. The year of his ordination witnessed his marriage, on the 28th of June, to Miss Helen Harriet Howe, at Vinton, Iowa.
In 1866, Mr. Holcomb took charge of the churches of East Hopewell and Nashville, in the Presbytery of Wooster, Synod of Ohio. Two years after, he accepted a call to the Presbyterian Church at Athens, Ohio. In August, 1870, he resigned his pastoral office, in order that he might go out as a foreign missionary, a work to which he had consecrated himself while in the seminary.
Accompanied by his wife, he sailed from New York en route to India, in October, 1870. They reached their destination in December. Mr. Holcomb spent several months at Etawa, studying the language with Rev. J. F. Ullman, a veteran missionary. He was stationed at Lodiana in 1871, at Furrukhabad in '72, and has been at Allahabad since March, '73, with the exception of the time spent in making a visit to his native land in 1880-81. Allahabad, where he now resides, is at the junction of the rivers Jumna and Ganges, 500 miles north-west of Calcutta. He has acquired knowledge of the Urdu and Hindi languages. His work now is superintending a school for boys, preaching to the heathen, and revising the Hindi New Testament. The revision committee, of which he is one, was appointed by the different missions, and works under the auspices of the North India Bible Society, which is auxiliary to the British and Foreign Bible Society. To have a share in translating the word of God for the people of India, he regards as the greatest honor and privilege of his life.
He has served as the agent of the Christian Vernacular Society of Madras, which has a branch office at Allahabad. This Society provides school books for Indian youth, and publishes tracts and leaflets in the native languages. Some years ago, he prepared two tracts, one in Urdu and one in Hindi, more than 30,000 of which have been printed. He has published a few sermons and magazine articles in Urdu.
In 1876, Mr. and Mrs. Holcomb undertook a journey to Cashmere, and in 1879 visited the flourishing missions of South India, accounts of which were sent by them to the home papers. They have traveled extensively through Europe and have visited Egypt, Palestine and Syria. Mrs. Holcomb, in addition to superintending Zenana work in Allahabad, has been a regular correspondent of the Sunday School Times, and lately of the Presbyterian Journal.
Mr. Holcomb is the only surviving member of his father's family. His father died just after he left the seminary. In 1876 one of his brothers was killed with General Custer. Last year, his mother, and only other brother passed away.
Our missionary maintains his weight, 145 pounds, in a country where the mercury stands, on a May day, at 114 degrees in the shade and 168 degrees in the sun. He is 5 ft. 10 inches in height.
James was educated in Ohio and assisted by his wife represented the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions at Allahabad, India, for 20 years.
James F. and Helen arrived in New York on the ship Campania from Liverpool on 24 June 1905. No other family were listed.
James Foote was listed as a registered voter in 1920 in Los Angeles Co., CA.
It is apparently James and Helen who are buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, Los Angeles Co., CA.

William Lyman Holcombe was born on 16 February 1819 at Carthage, Jefferson Co., NY. He was the son of Lyman Holcombe and Sally (?) William Lyman Holcombe married Estella Maria Fanning, daughter of Samuel Fanning, on 2 March 1841 at NY. William Lyman Holcombe died on 2 April 1886 at Rapid City, Pennington Co., SD, at age 67. He was buried at Mountain View Cemetery, Rapid City, Pennington Co., SD.2 Obituary:
Died at his residence in Rapid City, at 6:30 o'clock on Friday evening, April 2, 1886, William L. Holcomb aged sixty-six years, three months and fifteen days.
William L. Holcomb was born in Jefferson county, New York, on December 17th, 1819. He was married in March, 1841, to Maria Fanning, who with three sons, survives him. He went to California in 1852, and was one of the early settlers of San Francisco, where he was for some time engaged in the dairy and cheese manufacturing business. From San Francisco he returned to New York, and from therence removed in 1855 to Dubuque county, iowa, where he resided until June, 1877, when he came to the Black Hills and located in Rapid City, where he remained until the time of this death. he had always been a worker and a man of frugal habits. His honesty and sterling integrity were never questioned. He was a man of positive opinions, and never afraid or ashamed to express them. During his life he amassed a fortune, which he carefully guarded for his heirs. His face will be missed by many friends. One of the best and most fitting eulogies that can be pronounced upon him is that those who knew him best valued him most highly. It may also be said that while he was engaged for many years in money loaning, he never forclosed a mortgage.
Fred Holcomb, son of the deceased, was absent at the time his father was taken ill. He was at once telegraphed for to Centerville, Dakota, as was also a brother of the deceased residing in Jefferson county, New York. Fred will be here this evening, and no definite arrangements will be made for the guneral until his arrival.
To the wife of deceased, who has been his constant companion for forty-five years, and to the other members of the family the earnest sympathies of the community and of The Journal are offered.
The obituary immediately following W.L.'s was for that of his granddaughter, child of A.L. Holcomb, who also died April 2.
W. L. and Maria were enumerated in the 1880 Rapid City, Pennington Co., Dakota Territory, federal census. He was a hotel keeper, age 61, she was 60. Children in the household were Eugene 34, and his wife Laura 31; son Henry 11; Liman 32 and his wife Sarah 35, grandson Robert 1.

The announcement on Sunday aftgernoon that "Grandma Holcomb" had departed this life brought sadness to manyhearts in this community, for to know this gentle, motherly old lady ws to love her. though for many months past her friends could not disguise from themselves that she was failing when the summons came at last it came quickly, and but a few hours elapsed from the time a physician was called until lshe closed her eyes upon earth. In her last moments she was surrounded by her three sons and their families, who have the assurance that in their affliction they have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.
Deceased was born, grtew to womanhood and was married in Jefferson county, New York. With her husband she came west to Iowa in 1845, and to the Black Hills in 1877. Her life partner died in this city five years ago full of years and honors. She was buried at Mountain View Cemetery, Rapid City, Pennington Co., SD.1

Algernon Lyman Holcombe1
b. 27 May 1849, d. 11 October 1891
Algernon Lyman Holcombe was born on 27 May 1849 at Carthage, Jefferson Co., NY. He was the son of William Lyman Holcombe and Estella Maria Fanning. Algernon Lyman Holcombe married Sarah Elizabeth Brown, daughter of Hiram Brown and Elizabeth Luck, on 5 March 1877 at Farley, IA. Algernon Lyman Holcombe died on 11 October 1891 at Thrown from horse; his cattle ranch, 75 miles east of Rapid City, SD, at age 42. He was buried at Mountain View Cemetery, Rapid City, Pennington Co., SD.2
Cattle rancher, moved from Dubuque, IA to Black Hills of South Dakota and lived at Yankton, in March 1876; thence by boat to Pierre; returned to IA on account of illness until December 1877, when he was back in Rapid City, bringing the first furniture there and herds of cattle. he made log shanties for a home, placing his cattle on the Cheyenne River in partnership with two brothers, later dissolving and removing his cattle to the White River, where he bought large tracts of land; operated a grocery store in Rapid City, South Dakota freighting goods with teams from Pierre and operated a hotel, opened by his father in Rapid City. He soon concentrated on raising cattle and horses.
from the Rapid City newspaper, October 14, 1891:
Word reached the city early Monday morning that Algurn L. Holcomb, while riding his range, had his horse fall on him injuring him severely and Doctor Flick left at two o'clock that morning for the ranch on White river seventy-five miles east of Rapid City to attend the suffering man. When the messenger left the ranch at five o'clock Sunday afternoon Mr. Holdomb was unconsciious. The accident occurred about four o'clock and from the body's appearance when it reached the city last evening it must have been dragged a considerable distance by the horse before being extricated. Mr. Holcomb lived four hours after the accident, dying at 8:20 Sunday evening from the effects of the injury, but never regained consciousness after being found.
Mr. Holcomb was abaout forty-one years of age, and was well to do in worldly goods, besides owning a large cattle ranch on White river and was engaged at the time of his death on a beef round up, preparatory to making a shipment. It was the intention of Mr. Holcomb to take his family last evening on an eastern trip, and they had completed their arrangements for it. But the hand of death intervened and turns the home from one of joy to sorrow.
The subject of this article came to Rapid City in November, 1877, and has resided in the icty continuously since. On his arrival in the city he opened up a store of general merchandise and had teams on the road freighting. He afterwards disposed of this goods and engaged in the hotel business, running the Yankton hotel, now the exchange. During the fall of 1878 he retired from active commercial business and looked after his father's cattle interests, and on the latter's death in 1886, went into the cattle business on his own account.
Mr. Holcomb leaves a widow, two sons and two brothers to mourn his sudden death. The news of the death of one of Rapid City's oldest citizens last evening was a surprise, and his family has the entire sympathy of all.
The funeral will occur on Wednesday as relatives in the east have been notified and cannot reach here before that time.
