PORTLAND -- Dr. Stuart B. Herrick Jr., D.O., 76, a prominent osteopathic physician, of Bancroft Street died Thursday evening Maine Medical Center surrounded by his loving gamily.
He was born in Pleasantville, N.J., the son of Stuart B. Sr. and Rachel Hillard Herrick where he attended schools. He graduated from New Britain High School class of 1949, West Virginia Wesleyan University, class of 1953, and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1957. Dr. Herrick served his internship and residency at the former Osteopathic Hospital of Maine where he would serve on the medical staff form 1965 to 2006.
In the 20 years Dr. Herrick was Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the former Osteopathic Hospital of Maine from 1965-1985, he piloted many new procedures and spearheaded many changes that kept that department up to date with the best in medical care through all the advancements of the 60s and 70s.
He began the Special Care Unit and the Coronary Care Unit where he was the first to use a portable electrocardiogram (EKG) machine. He would bring the machine home at night, and even to his camp, so that in case of a crisis, a patients EKG could be transmitted to him directly via the phone. He also was responsible for placing the first transvenous pacemaker in a female patient at the Osteopathic hospital of Maine. His dedication is part of the earned respect, which resulted in his 1976 - 1977 term as Chairman of the Medical Staff. He was one of he first physicians nominated and named to the Board of Trustees in 1982 a position he held for 12 years, longer than any other physician. He pave the way for medicine as it is today in Maine. He also served on the medical staff at Maine Medical Center and Mercy Hospital.
He was a member of the Maine Medical Association, member of the Southern Maine Osteopathic Association, and was a 32nd degree Mason.
He is predeceased by his two sons, Stuart B. Herrick III, and Benjamin S. Herrick. Besides his wife of 33 years, Diane (Mears) Herrick of Portland; he leaves a son, Mark W. Herrick of Gray, a daughter, Sally B. Herrick of Atlanta, Ga; a brother, Dr. Kirk Herrick, D.O. of Michigan, a sister, Betty Rae Herrick of Pennsylvania; two granddaughters, Nicole M. Herrick of South Portland, Amy J. Herrick of Gray; and great-granddaughter, Isabella Carrier.
Visiting hours will be held Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, from 3-8 p.m. at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at 12 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Brian Wade officiating. Interment will be private at Evergreen Cemetery.

Patricia graduated from South Windsor High School in 1968, received her undergraduate degree from Connecticut College for Women in 1972, and then earned her Juris Doctorate Degree from UConn Law School in 1977. Patricia's law career included United States District Court Connecticut 1980, United States Court 2nd District Court of Appeals 1982, Connecticut Supreme Court of the United States 1991. She was a recipient of the American Jurisprudence Book award West Public Company, 1977. Her private practice in Wethersfield specialized in the fields of Employment Law, Labor Law, Workers Compensation Law, Civil Litigation in all State and Federal Courts, Administrative Law, and Collections. Patricia has volunteered service as the Connecticut Support Group Leader since 2018 for the Neuroendocrine Cancer Awareness Network (NCAN) to offer education and emotional support to patients and caregivers. She has also provided volunteer support for the Al-Anon group in Wethersfield.
