Stenman, Carol Griswold. Carol Griswold Stenman, 66, passed into eternal peace on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at Hartford Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Although cancer may have successfully conquered her body, it never eroded either her soul or her spirits which always remained positive and optimistic.Born on June 12, 1952 in Hartford, Carol was the third child of the late Albert Deming Griswold, Jr. and Ruth (Gourlie) Griswold. She graduated from Rocky Hill High School in 1970, Lesley College in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Education, and The University of Hartford in 1980 with a Master of Education. Carol taught at the elementary level for several years prior to becoming a full-time mom to her two children. Once they were in school, Carol returned to her love of teaching, this time at the preschool level at the First Church Early Learning Center in Windsor for fifteen years, where she had previously served on its board as vice president and then president. Carol was raised in Rocky Hill and, following her college graduation, married Carl Stenman, the love of her life. They raised their family in Windsor, and upon becoming empty nesters, Carol and Carl downsized and moved to Glastonbury. During her retirement Carol participated in various activities, including the Glastonbury Chorus and the Friends of the Welles-Turner Memorial Library, while spending the majority of her time caring for her grandchildren whom she adored. Carol is survived by: her husband Carl; her two children and their spouses - Christina Liebel and husband Christopher of Glastonbury and Michael Stenman and wife Shari of Weston; her three grandchildren - Daniel Liebel, Amelia Liebel, and Mason Stenman; her two brothers and their spouses - William G. Griswold and his wife Luanne of Middletown and Donald W. Griswold and his wife Kathy of Wethersfield; her sister-in-law Maggie Stenman and husband Michael Roye of Bonita Springs, FL; and her eight nieces and nephews and their spouses. From the Republican-American (Waterbury, CT) - Friday, May 11, 2018

WOODBURY - Katherine L. Holcomb, 97, passed away after a brief illness in Martha's Vineyard Hospital on Dec. 11, 2017.

Born in Waterbury, she was predeceased by her husband, Lester W. Holcomb Sr; her parents, Anna Maria LoRusso and Vito LoRusso; her brother, Donato LoRusso; and her sister, Maria Vincenza Baranauskas.

She graduated from Bishop Street School, Driggs School, Wilby High School, and received an honorary degree from Post Junior College in 1958 for her work developing local pathways for credentialing women in Waterbury to develop their careers while staying in place. She was the first woman in Connecticut to take the national Certified Professional Secretary Exam (CPS) and pass all sections of the test in one sitting, and then continued her studies when the local UConn branch opened on Hillside Avenue, but could not graduate due to the on-campus requirements for residency in Storrs.

She worked for three decades at U.S. Rubber/Uniroyal Inc., moving up the corporate ladder from the Naugatuck Footwear plant manager's secretary to divisional human resources and compensation and benefits director for their Consumer and Industrial Products Division which also required traveling around the country making plantwide presentations to all employees and managers about changing benefits and career ladders for both men and women.

When she retired, she worked in real estate for several years, but pulled out just before that market collapsed. She became a volunteer director for Woodbury Public Library in the early 1970s, then served on a Red Cross committee in Farmington.

Katherine "Kay" was seen by those she worked with directly as a skilled, dedicated and compassionate business woman. Her family knew that her secret passion was reading books. Their authors were her "closest friends." She gave her text books at the end of each semester to other students, maintained an in-house library of 2,000 books, donated books to local libraries, and maintained subscriptions to many magazines, news and trade newspapers.

She leaves a son, Les Holcomb, and her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, of Edgartown, Mass., two grandchildren, Jacob of Honolulu, and Kate of New Orleans; a sister, Anna Vaccaro of Port Chester, N.Y; a sister-in-law, Ann LoRusso of Watertown; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, May 19, 9:30 a.m. at St. John's Church on the Green.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to two new memorial funds for Kay Holcomb and Bart LoRusso at Shakesperience Productions Inc., 117 Bank St., Waterbury, CT 06702 (shakesperience.org (501(c)(3)) to expand services in three Waterbury after-school programs that offer training to elementary schoolers using theater to improve confidence in expression/speaking/and literacy.      Edward Lorraine Holcombe was born on 22 July 1926 at Camp Crook, Harding Co., SD.1 He was the son of Marshall Lorraine Holcombe and Marjorie A. Plunkett.1 Edward Lorraine Holcombe married Arlene Marie Bausch on 4 September 1954 at Rapid City, Pennington Co., SD. Edward Lorraine Holcombe died on 9 January 2011 at Benson, Cochise Co., AZ, at age 84.1 He was buried on 11 January 2011 at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, Meade Co., SD.1

Edward Lorraine Holcomb, of Benson, AZ, passed away early Sunday morning, January 9, 2011, in Tucson, AZ, at the age of 84. He was born in Camp Crook, Harding County, SD, on July 22, 1926, to parents Marshall "Buster" and Marjorie A. (Plunkett) Holcomb. His family moved to Rapid City in 1940, where he graduated from Rapid City High School in 1944, and enlisted in the US Navy. That summer, while Edward was visiting his Uncle Gene Holcomb's family in Harding County, a tornado struck the ranch. The family, unable to reach shelter, hung onto a clothesline post. As the winds tore at the group, little cousin, Ardis, was ripped away; but Edward was able to grab onto her, most likely saving her life.

He proudly served in the Navy, enlisting in 1944. His first Navy assignment was to the new destroyer, the USS Huntington. He was in Tokyo Bay for the signing of the Japanese surrender. After WWII, he served on destroyers in Europe, the Caribbean, and the Western Pacific, including combat service on the USS Taylor during the Korean Conflict. He served onboard many destroyers, and was commissioned as an officer in 1960. A highlight of his career was serving as the Ordnance Advisor to the Royal Thai Navy from 1969 to 1972. After living in Bangkok, the famiy traveled through Europe enroute to Edward's last duty station at McAlester Naval Ammunition Depot in Oklahoma. In 1973 Lieutenant Edward Holcomb, USN, retired and the family moved to Rapid City.

On September 4, 1954, Edward married Arlene Bausch in Rapid City. Their duty stations included Washington, DC, Hawaii, Oregon State College at Corvallis, where he was commissioned as an Ensign; San Diego, and Port Hueneme, CA, where son David was born. While stationed at White Sands Missile Range, NM, Ed and Arlene's love of the desert grew as the family spent many weekends camping in the "Fireball" trailer. He and his wife, Arlene, were long-term residents of Rapid City, SD, before moving to Benson in 1999. He and Arlene were members of Atonement Lutheran Church, the Black Hills Spiritual Frontiers Fellowship, and Edward completed his BS degree at National College of Business. In 1990, after selling Arlene's "Forever Yours Bridal Village," they became "snowbirds," traveling south every winter in their fifth-wheel trailer until 1999, when they bought a home in Benson, AZ, with gorgeous views of the desert sunset. They joined Peach in the Valley Lutheran Church.Edward enjoyed history, science, traveling, camping, fishing, rock hounding, golf, gardening, and making wine from his own grapes. He was an active member of the Elks, the S.M.A.R.T. Roadrunners club, the VFW, the Retired Officers Association, the Fleet Reserve Association, the Disabled American Veterans Association, and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene Holcomb; his children, Mark Holcomb,Overland Park, KS, Tana (Korey) Jackson, Woodbridge, VA, and David (Deborah) Holcomb, San Diego, CA; and seven grandchildren, Katrina Jackson, Ashley Holcomb, Matthew Jackson, Bethany Jackson, James Holcomb, Alex Holcomb, and Ryan Holcomb.
Services will be held at Peace in the Valley Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 22. Committal services will be Friday, July 15, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273.
