He was a friend of both John Adams and John Hancock and soon found himself enmeshed in the controversy with England over taxation and citizen rights. He served as speaker of the Assembly of the State of Massachusetts in 1777, and following the War was appointed by Governor Hancock to the Supreme Court of the State in 1790. Paine continued in this service for fourteen years until an increasing problem of deafness caused him to retire from the bench and return to his scientific pursuits, reading, and writing. He had been much interested in Astronomy and was a founder of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.2
