William Anson Ellsworth1
b. 8 January 1818, d. 5 August 1900
William Anson Ellsworth was born on 8 January 1818 at Harford, Susquehanna Co., PA.1 He was the son of Eliphalet Ellsworth and Bethia Thatcher.1 William Anson Ellsworth married Lydia Clark in 1838.2 William Anson Ellsworth died on 5 August 1900 at South Ottawa, La Salle Co., IL, at age 82.1
Wm. A. and Lydia were enumerated in the 1850 Farm Ridge, LaSalle Co., IL, federal census. He was a farmer age 33, she was 24. The only child in the household was Ada L. 3. Also in the household was Timothy E. Hayes 15.
In 1856 W A Ellsworth purchased the farm from his wife's parents and at the death of his father in law, bought out the other heirs. The farm is now known as the Brookwood Farm, about 12 miles west and south of Ottawa, Ill.
There have been two houses built on the place since he purchased it. The original house stood across the road from where the next 2 houses were built. His son Urban owned and lived in the old homestead, until his death, defying his wife to move into the new one she had built. She did care for him in old place however, as he had a broken back, hurt in some kind of accident. He suffered greatly from this and I can testify to this, as I have letters written by him to his beloved Aunt Sarah Ellsworth Tiffany, and now in my possession. He must have been a very well liked and properous man. He married Victoria Bessie Gibbs. I rememeber her quite well for a child my parents would visit with them. They had three children all passed away now, Ada, William and Dorothy. None married. Ada was the last to past away and she left the farm to her tenant, a Jack Snell and his wife, who was Juanita Nagle. They tore down the house Aunt Vick (Victoria) had had built in her younger days and now a fine new ranch type home of brick stands where the 2nd house stood (VDW -1983)
William and Lydia were enumerated in the 1880 Deer Park, La Salle Co., IL, federal census. He was a retired farmer age 62, she was 54. Children in the household were Orin 24, and Sarah 21. Next door was son Urbin and his family.
