b. 9 March 1842, d. 29 December 1908
Pierson Alonzo Holcombe JP was born on 9 March 1842 at LeRoy, Bradford Co., PA.3 He was the son of Alonzo B. Holcombe and Lemira Morse. Pierson Alonzo Holcombe JP married Sophia Elizabeth Mott, daughter of Matthew Mott and Mary Knickerbocker, on 24 August 1864 at Alba, Bradford Co., PA. Pierson Alonzo Holcombe JP died on 29 December 1908 at LeRoy, Bradford Co., PA, at age 66.3 He was buried at Mott Family Cemetery, Bradford Co., PA.4

"Although Alonzo has started out quite well-off with a mill and farm, because of the high post war inflation rates (10% was common) his mother could not keep much for him.

"Young Pierson enlisted in the Union troops when Gen. Robert E. Lee threatened to invade the North in the summer of 1863. He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (See monument of the 115th NY Engineers at Gettysburg). Many years later he was the Justice of the Peace in Leroy, and handled the pension claims for veeterans of the area. (On one occasion a man paid the 25 cents fee due the J.P. by bringing in a dozen heads of winter cabbage.)

"Grandfather tried farming for a while in Shunk, then house-painter, as well as J.P. Grandfather married Matt and Lizzie - he was the official at the ceremony." Aunt Paulie's Book

He is recorded in the 1870 census of Leroy, Bradford Co., PA as a farmer owning real estate $3,300.

"Grandmother Sophia Mott Holcombe was an herbalist who according to relatives often nprescribed cures for some ailments. My cousin Elizabeth got pneumonia. She was so bad her hair all came out. Grandmother nursed her to health, but died of pneumonia herself.

"Grandmother Holcombe was a naturally artistic person. She had a successful millinary business for many years in Leroy, PA. She would go to New York City once a year, stay with a Knickerbocker relative for a week and bur supplies: hat braids, hat forms, silks, velvets, ribbons, flowers, etc. One bill someone has, shows she paid nearly a hundred dollars which at that time would buy a lot of ribbons, etc. Spring and fall she would arrange for herself or one of ther girls to take the horse and buggy and go to Monroeton, stay for a week with friends and sell, or retrim peoples' own hats.

"She managed to have her girls get piano lessons so they could teach at home when they were married women later. My father attended Elmira Business College. Uncle Frank had some business training. Uncle Matt was a natural 'engineer.' She, grandma, died too young for Lamarr to finish school and he traveled across the US stopping to work a while, then move on. He became a skilled atuo mechanic, learning as he worked. Grandma Holcombe died when I was only eight so I knew her very little." Aunt Paulie's Book

William Henry Holcombe1

b. 25 December 1841, d. 6 October 1923
William Henry Holcombe was born on 25 December 1841.2 He was the son of Samuel Darrow Holcombe and Cynthia Husted. William Henry Holcombe married Martha Tudor, daughter of Alfred Brewster Tudor and Sarah Ford, on 21 March 1863 at McLean Co., IL. William Henry Holcombe died on 6 October 1923 at age 81.2

William moved in 1864 to Bloomington, McLean Co., IL; to Wyandotte Co., KS in 1866; served as a RR conductor in KS in 1870; pioneer stock raiser and dealer and served as Sheriff of Wyandotte Co.

McPherson has this William - word for word - in two different places. On page 199.1, son of Amos Bull Holcombe; and on page 72.2, son of Samuel Darrow Holcombe.

The Enisgn Record, page 213, has this William marrying Martha Tudor and dying in 1924 whereas McPherson has him marrying Elizabeth Dailey and dying in 1894.

Martha Eunice Enisgn Nelson notes, on page 335: "To Ella Mary Holcomb is due much commendation for her tireless efforts to resolve some of the problems of her ancestry and also that of the James Riley Ensign family. Her correspondence and her conclusions were sent in 1952 to Charels S. Ensign to be included in any future publications. When Charles died all of his and his father's records were sent to the author. Many things are not yet clear in some of these families."3

However, Pat Sorrels, a great-grandchild, supports the descent from Amos Bull Holcombe.

We must then assume that the Ensign Record data is probably more accurate than McPherson's. The Loomis Genealogy, Female Lines, calls the husband of Martha Tudor "Henry Holcombe".
