Inscription on the monument in the LeRoy cemetery:


"In memory of Elizabeth Oakley Holcomb who married Hugh Holcomb, 1799 or 1800. first woman to sesttle in LeRoy Township. First to marry in the township. First to give birth, May 26, 1801, the the first white male child born in the township. First to die. Death taking place shortly after the birth of her son, Marlin, 1801. First to be buried in LeRoy cemetery. this memorial marks her grave. The beginning of this cemetery. Some stones in this pillar are from the farm of her husband, the first to be cleared for farming in the township where she married and died. This tablet erected by the citizens of Leroy township, September, 1932."


By the monument stands the original marker made of black walnut and placed there to mark her grave more than one hundred years ago.

"HORRIBLE DEATH - A man of the name of Alonzo B. Holcomb, of Leroy township, Pennsylvania, was gored to death by his own bull on the 29th ult. He kept the animal chained to a stake in a field on his farm, and on removing the stake to another part of the field he was attacked by the bull and gored to death. So furious was the assault of the animal that the man was literally torn piecemeal. Not an article of clothing was found upon his person, except the wristband of his shirt."

     Harvey Holcombe was born on 29 May 1816 at LeRoy, Bradford Co., PA.2 He was the son of Hugh Holcombe and Prudence Bailey. Harvey Holcombe married Diana Rockwell, daughter of Samuel Rockwell and Betsey Grantier, on 23 January 1840 at Troy, Bradford Co., PA.3,4 Harvey Holcombe married Perlina Dibble, daughter of Selah Dibble and Salina Holcombe, on 26 August 1882 at Smithfield, PA. Harvey Holcombe died on 20 March 1896 at Bradford Co., PA, at age 79.5 He was buried at Leroy Cemetery, Leroy, Bradford Co., PA.5

The Bradford Argus indicates Harvey had nine children of whom seven were still living at his death. In politics Mr. Holcomb was a Republican and held at various times all the township offices.

HARVEY HOLCOMB, farmer, of Franklin Township, P. O. Franklindale, was born in LeRoy, this county, May 29, 1816, is the son of Hugh and Prudence (Bailey) Holcomb, the former a native of Connecticut, the latter of Massachusetts. Hugh and his brother, Sterling, when they came from the East, located in Ulster, from which place they removed about 1796, locating in LeRoy, each purchasing 400 acres on both sides of the Towanda creek. Hugh Holcomb had nine children seven sons and two daughters all of whom grew to maturity. Harvey, who is the sixth in the family, was reared and educated at LeRoy, and always worked on a farm. On January 23, 1840, he married Miss Diana, daughter of Samuel and Betsey Rockwell, and to them were born nine children, eight of whom are now living; the other son was killed in the army at the battle of Spottsylvania after a service of nearly three years. Mr. Holcomb moved from LeRoy to Franklin, his present home, in 1884; his wife died June 10, 1880, and he married (for his second) at Smithfield, August 26, 1882, Mrs. Perlina Pierce, widow of William Henry Pierce, and daughter of Mrs. Selina (Holcomb) Dibble, who came from Broome county, N. Y. In 1844 she removed to this county, where she now resides at the advanced age of ninety-five years, and is able to work about the house; she began and completed a quilt of 3,000 pieces after she was ninety-three years of age. Mr. Holcomb as a farmer confines himself to raising grain and hay; he has been honored with the offices of assessor, school director (twelve years) and road commissioner; is a member of the Church of Christ, and is a Republican, politically.
