Barbara Parks, wife of National Hot Rod Assn. founder Wally Parks, died of cancer in her Glendale home on Wednesday. She was 82.
Parks was a driving force and a creative influence in the early days of hot-rodding and championship drag racing, according to the National Hot Rod Assn. website.
Although she new little about racing, Parks signed on as her husband's secretary in the 1950's and devoted the remainder of her life nurturing the hobby known as hot-rodding.
She transitioned to a secretary's job at Hot Rod Magazine in Southern California and was introduced to the current and popular trends among car enthusiasts.
In 1955, when the National Championship races were formed, Parks became involved with the planning, preparations, and event promotions.
She was also involved with the structuring of the organization's chartered car clubs program.
