     Martha Cornelia Case was born on 5 June 1832 at West Suffield, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Warren Case and Nancy Ann Viets. Martha Cornelia Case died on 18 February 1837 at age 4.¹

     Caroline L. Case was born on 24 May 1834 at West Suffield, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Warren Case and Nancy Ann Viets.¹ Caroline L. Case died on 9 November 1835 at age 1.¹

     Dewitt Clinton Case was born on 22 July 1841 at West Suffield, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Warren Case and Nancy Ann Viets. Dewitt Clinton Case married Emma J. Johnson.¹ Dewitt Clinton Case died on 21 March 1901 at West Suffield, Hartford Co., CT, at age 59.¹

     Emma J. Johnson was born on 22 May 1861 at Middletown, Middlesex Co., CT.¹ She married Dewitt Clinton Case, son of Warren Case and Nancy Ann Viets.¹ Emma J. Johnson died in 1932.¹

     Rev. Duane Nelson Griffin was born on 24 December 1853.¹ He was the son of Richardson Griffin and Julia Ann Viets.¹ Rev. Duane Nelson Griffin died on 8 November 1927 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 73.¹

     Lois Viets Buttolph was born on 3 December 1769 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Jonathan Buttolph and Lois Viets.¹ Lois Viets Buttolph died on 17 January 1775 at age 5.¹ She was buried at Lee Cemetery, Granby, Hartford Co., CT.²

     Annis Buttolph was baptized on 3 May 1772 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Jonathan Buttolph and Lois Viets. Annis Buttolph married Samuel Everett Jr. on 24 May 1791.¹ Annis Buttolph died in 1852.¹

     Samuel Everett Jr. was born on 30 April 1769 at Torrington, Litchfield Co., CT.¹ He married Annis Buttolph, daughter of Jonathan Buttolph and Lois Viets, on 24 May 1791.¹ Samuel Everett Jr. died on 14 April 1809 at Granville, Licking Co., OH, at age 39.¹

     Elihu Buttolph was born at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Jonathan Buttolph and Lois Viets. Elihu Buttolph died at Orwell, Bradford Co., PA.¹

     Jonathan Buttolph was born on 9 June 1778 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.^1,2 He was the son of Jonathan Buttolph and Lois Viets. Jonathan Buttolph married Lucy Whitney, daughter of Uriah Whitney and Martha Hart, on 20 November 1798.¹ Jonathan Buttolph died on 15 September 1851 at North Lee, MA, at age 73.¹

Jonathan was at various times a shoemaker, schoolmaster, millwright, and turner. He was Captain of a Militia (minutemen) in the War of 1812.³

     Lucy Whitney was born on 1 May 1779 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Uriah Whitney and Martha Hart. Lucy Whitney married Jonathan Buttolph, son of Jonathan Buttolph and Lois Viets, on 20 November 1798.¹ Lucy Whitney died on 5 November 1848 at North Lee, MA, at age 69.¹

     Keziah Viets was born on 12 November 1777 at Newgate, Simsbury, CT.¹ She was the daughter of Lt. Luke Viets and Keziah Phelps.¹ Keziah Viets died in August 1847 at age 69.¹

     Rosannah Viets was born on 4 December 1778 at Newgate, Simsbury, CT.¹ She was the daughter of Lt. Luke Viets and Keziah Phelps.¹ Rosannah Viets married Elijah Remington, son of Elijah Remington and Esther (?), on 5 September 1800 at Suffield, Hartford Co., CT.¹

     Capt. John Viets was born on 1 March 1782 at Newgate, Simsbury, CT.¹ He was the son of Lt. Luke Viets and Keziah Phelps.¹ Capt. John Viets married Abigail Eno, daughter of Jonathan Eno and Mary Goodrich Hart, on 2 October 1805.¹ Capt. John Viets died on 11 October 1857 at age 75.

John was captain of a training band, read much, and was well posted in law and the practical affairs of the day. He was an industrious and successful farmer. He settled at the age of 25 on the farm a mile south of the prison, afterwards for many years in possession of his son, Chauncey E., and later owned by George E. Bidwell. He purchased and occupied during the latter part of his life the Orson Phelps' place in East Granby. He is said to have been a man of medium stature and of dark eyes and hair. He served as Captain of the 18th regiment in the War of 1812. ²

     Catherine Viets was born on 22 November 1783 at Newgate, Simsbury, CT.¹ She was the daughter of Lt. Luke Viets and Keziah Phelps.¹ Catherine Viets died in 1813.¹

     George Viets was born on 23 June 1786 at Newgate, Simsbury, CT.¹ He was the son of Lt. Luke Viets and Keziah Phelps.¹ George Viets died on 10 April 1787.¹

     Esther Viets was born on 22 January 1790 at Newgate, Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Lt. Luke Viets and Keziah Phelps.¹ Esther Viets married Pliny Owen, son of Isaac Owen Jr. and Zerviah Cornish, in 1809.¹ Esther Viets died on 8 October 1820 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 30.²

     Roger Viets was born on 28 October 1791 at Newgate, Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Lt. Luke Viets and Keziah Phelps. Roger Viets married Maria Hollenbeck in 1818.¹ Roger Viets married Mary E. Allen.¹ Roger Viets died on 17 March 1848 at Liverpool, Fulton Co., IL, at age 56.¹

Roger studied medicine and was for some years a practicing physician in Albany, New York. Dr. Viets later moved to Lewiston, Fulton County, Illinois. He apparently died of cholera in the epidemic in fulton County in 1848-1849.²

     Elijah Remington was born in August 1774. He was the son of Elijah Remington and Esther (?) Elijah Remington married Rosannah Viets, daughter of Lt. Luke Viets and Keziah Phelps, on 5 September 1800 at Suffield, Hartford Co., CT.¹ Elijah Remington died on 9 March 1807 at age 32.

     Eliza Remington was born on 21 August 1801 at Suffield, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Elijah Remington and Rosannah Viets.¹ Eliza Remington married Jabez Hendrick, son of James Hendrick and Huldah Parsons, on 20 November 1825.¹ Eliza Remington died on 7 February 1876 at Chicopee Falls, MA, at age 74.¹

     Jabez Hendrick was born on 22 March 1796 at Easthampton, MA.¹ He was the son of James Hendrick and Huldah Parsons. Jabez Hendrick married Eliza Remington, daughter of Elijah Remington and Rosannah Viets, on 20 November 1825.¹ Jabez Hendrick died on 5 August 1885 at Springfield, Hampden Co., MA, at age 89.¹

     John Remington was born on 26 June 1803.¹ He was the son of Elijah Remington and Rosannah Viets.¹

     Charles Viets was born on 12 March 1803 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Luke Viets Jr. and Abigail Phelps. Charles Viets died on 1 March 1838 at age 34; unmarried.

     Catherine Viets was born on 14 August 1805 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Luke Viets Jr. and Abigail Phelps.¹ Catherine Viets died on 9 January 1818 at age 12.¹

     Orlando Viets was born on 5 August 1807 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Luke Viets Jr. and Abigail Phelps. Orlando Viets died on 8 July 1811 at age 3.¹ He was buried at Suffield Cemetery.

     Abigail Viets was born on 6 August 1811 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Luke Viets Jr. and Abigail Phelps. Abigail Viets died on 10 March 1835 at age 23.¹

     Ansel Viets was born on 27 March 1814 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Luke Viets Jr. and Abigail Phelps. Ansel Viets married Sarah Minerva Root on 3 June 1838.¹ Ansel Viets died in 1894 at Sandisfield, MA.¹

     Jane Viets was born on 9 May 1816 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Luke Viets Jr. and Abigail Phelps. Jane Viets died on 21 February 1889 at age 72.¹

     Amoret E. Viets was born on 31 May 1821 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Luke Viets Jr. and Abigail Phelps. Amoret E. Viets died in 1901 at San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA.¹

Amoret moved to Mexico in 1843 and to California in 1848.²

     Abigail Eno was born on 28 February 1785 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Jonathan Eno and Mary Goodrich Hart. Abigail Eno married Capt. John Viets, son of Lt. Luke Viets and Keziah Phelps, on 2 October 1805.¹ Abigail Eno died on 20 December 1863 at age 78.¹

     John Jay Viets was born on 22 September 1806 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Capt. John Viets and Abigail Eno. John Jay Viets married Jane Wadsworth, daughter of Timothy Wadsworth and Mary Gillette, on 6 May 1851.¹ John Jay Viets died on 10 December 1885 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 79.²

John was a graduate of Wilbraham Academy, and taught many terms in Simsbury. When a boy he lived one season with his grandfather, Luke Viets. He was for many years a merchant, and a well known citizen. Jane was descended from William Wadsworth, one of the early settlers of Connecticut who came across the wilderness to Hartford in Mr. Hooker's company. His name is on the monument behind Center Church, Hartford.³

     Imlay Bird Viets was born on 19 December 1808 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Capt. John Viets and Abigail Eno. Imlay Bird Viets married Julietta Andrews Hart, daughter of Cyrus Hart and Elizabeth Clark, on 25 June 1838.¹ Imlay Bird Viets married Angeline Clark Hart, daughter of Cyrus Hart and Elizabeth Clark, on 28 June 1843.¹ Imlay Bird Viets died on 19 October 1875 at New Britain, Hartford Co., CT, at age 66.¹

Imlay was engaged for some years in the real estate business in New Britain.²

     Abi Lavinia Viets was born on 20 April 1810 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Capt. John Viets and Abigail Eno. Abi Lavinia Viets married Almerin Pratt, son of Nathaniel Pratt and Candace Wilcox, on 10 November 1841 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.^1,2 Abi Lavinia Viets died on 26 August 1884 at Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH, at age 74.¹

Abi and Almerin resided for a time in East Granby, removing in 1869 to Cleveland, Ohio.³

     Chauncey Eno Viets was born on 3 October 1812 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Capt. John Viets and Abigail Eno. Chauncey Eno Viets married Esther Dennison, daughter of Charles Dennison and Delilah (?), on 31 May 1837 at Suffield, Hartford Co., CT.¹ Chauncey Eno Viets married Nancy Nooney, daughter of James Nooney Jr. and Abigail (?), on 31 October 1839 at Chester, MA.¹ Chauncey Eno Viets died on 22 July 1876 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 63.

Chauncey was a farmer and salesman. He occupied his father's old place west of the mountain, where he made extensive improvements. No children.²

Chauncey and Nancy were enumerated in the 1870 East Granby, Hartford Co., CT federal census, page 2. He was a farmer, age 56, she was 52.

     Mary Adelia Viets was born on 19 February 1819 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Capt. John Viets and Abigail Eno. Mary Adelia Viets married Edward H. Bowers on 16 March 1848.¹ Mary Adelia Viets died on 15 May 1902 at age 83.¹

The family resided in Hartford.²

     James Rollin Viets was born on 20 September 1821 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Capt. John Viets and Abigail Eno. James Rollin Viets married Cordelia Tryphena Rouse, daughter of Joel Chapman Rouse and Emily Mary Henderson, on 14 September 1852. James Rollin Viets died on 14 July 1896 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 74.¹

"In the death of James Rollin Viets, whose funeral was held Thursday at his late residence, the town of East Granby loses one of its most prominent citizens and business men of the valley, one who for a half century has been actively and honorably associated with them. Mr. Viets was born at East Granby September 20, 1821. He was the son of Captain John Viets of the same town, and Abigail Eno of Simsbury. He was descended from Stephen Hart, who came with Hooker from Dorchester, Massachusetts to Hartford, and was the first deacon of the Hartford church. He was the grandson of Captain John Viets, who, when the Revolution broke out, was appointed the first military keeper of old Newgate prison.

"Early in life Mr. Viets entered the employ of the firm of Eno and Phelps of New York, which was then composed of his cousins, John Jay Phelps and Amos R. Eno, --the latter of whom is still living. Being anxious to obtain a more liberal education, and cherishing a desire to enter the ministry, he afterwards attended in succession a private school in Amherst, Mass., the Hopkins Grammar School of Hadley, Mass., and joined the first class of Williston Seminary, Easthampton, Mass., which had just been opened, and where he prepared to enter college in the sophomore class.

"He later turned again to business pursuits, but always preserved his literary tastes, and was a wide reader of the better literature. After leaving Williston Seminary he bought out his brother, John Jay Viets and formed a partnership with James O. Allen, lately of Springfield, and a few years later bought the entire interest of his partner, and for about thirty years continued in business alone.

"He had extensive business relations, and was everywhere recognized as a man of sterling worth, of utmost integrity, honesty, and purity of character. His judgment was often sought, and his counsel was considered safe and wise. He united with the Congregational Church in early life, and for a period of thirty years served as treasurer of the parish. In politics he was an ardent Republican. His convictions were clear, deep, and strong. He held slavery, intemperance, gambling, and kindred evils in utter detestation, and did not shrink from the fullest expression of his views. For many years he held the office of postmaster."

It may be added that Deacon Stephen Hart of Hartford, from whom Mr. Viets was descended, came from Braintree, England, and was buried in the burying ground of the Center Church, Hartford, where his name is recorded on the historic monument. Mr. Viets was also descended on his mother's side from James Eno, who came to Windsor in 1670. In common with others of this branch he was descended from William Phelps who settled in Windsor in 1635 and from Ezekiel Phelps who fought in the Revolution.

Mr. Viets married September 14, 1852 Cordelia Tryphena Rouse of Saratoga Springs, New York. Mrs. Viets was the fourth child of Joel Chapman and Emily (Henderson) Rouse. She was born January 5, 1827 at Bennington, Vermont. Among her ancestors are numbered many of the early settlers in America, several of whom became well known for their distinguished services to their country. She is descended from Caspar Rouse, "yeoman," who came from Paltz, Germany, and settled at Cold Springs on the Hudson about 1730. He was enrolled as one of the first five hundred freeholders in New York State. His son, Jonathan Rouse, resided at Pittstown, Rensselaer County. He was one of the promoters of the Erie Canal, postmaster, judge of the county court, and a member of the New York legislature.

Among her ancestors were James Breckenridge, a Scotch covenanter who emigrated to Ireland, and in 1720 to America. He was one of the founders of the state of Vermont, served in the militia in 1764, was a member of the Provincial Congress, 1775 and founder of the First Church of Bennington. He was appointed special commissioner to England to settle the boundary claims between New York and Vermont.

Another ancestor, Thomas Henderson, married Jerret Breckenridge, daughter of the above. A Scotsman of the Clan of Gunn, on coming to America he settled in Ware, Massachusetts, served in the French and Indian War in 1757, and was at the battle of Mount Independence. He removed to Bennington, Vermont, in 1764 where he bought a large farm at the top of what came to be known as "Henderson Hill," down which the troops marched to fight the memorable battle in which every able-bodied man in town engaged. He was one of the members of the First Church in that town, and shared the "honorable pew" with Deacon Webb. He married Tryphena Sloan, daughter of John Sloan, who served in General Fellows' Brigade, doing duty at Albany, and died October 22, 1778.

Mrs. Viets is also a descendant of Thomas Dewey, who came from England in 1633 with the first settlers of Dorchester, Massachusetts, and was one of the founders of Windsor, Connecticut, and is thus in direct descent from Alfred the Great, William the Conqueror, and other kings of England and Scotland.

Mrs. Viets was educated at the Old Academy, Bennington, and at Troy Female Seminary, which was founded by Emma Willard, the distinguished pioneer of education for women. to this school, its inspiring memories, and its present work, she has cherished a warm devotion. After leaving Troy she taught several private schools, and developed an abiding fondness for the English classics. She is a member of the Congregational Church in East Granby, of the Emma Willard Association of New York City, and of the Louise St. Clair Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.²

"The work of Mrs. Viets in local church and for the educational life of the community was earnest and efficient and the home became a center of moral influence and power. After the death of Mr. Viets in 1896 she removed to Detroit where she lived with her daughter Emily, who was superintendent of the Kindergarten system in the city schools. Mrs. Viets enjoyed the vigorous use of all her mental powers to the end of her long life, was ever deeply interested in all Christian work, and was an indefatigable reader of the best literature, especially in the direction of personal biography and Italian art.

"She died in Salem, Massachusetts, October 3, 1916. Her funeral was held in the church in East Granby, and the interment was in the cemetery near by."

     Charlotte Viets was born on 20 September 1811.¹ She was the daughter of Capt. George Viets and Charlotte Rice.¹ Charlotte Viets died on 18 November 1811.¹

     Esther Keziah Viets was born on 18 June 1816 at Capt. John Viets' house at Newgate, Simsbury, CT.¹ She was the daughter of Capt. George Viets and Charlotte Rice.

     Pliny Owen was born on 30 October 1787.¹ He was the son of Isaac Owen Jr. and Zerviah Cornish. Pliny Owen married Esther Viets, daughter of Lt. Luke Viets and Keziah Phelps, in 1809.¹ Pliny Owen died on 2 July 1831 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 43.¹ He was buried on 3 July 1831 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT.

Dorothy Dean Viets Schell in her book "A Viets Genealogy", page 60, lists the death of Pliny Owen in Granby as June 31, 1831. This is an error that has apparently been repeated before. Carol Laun of the Salmon Brook Historical Society checked a number of sources and found the death recorded in Isaac Owen's Journal as 2 Jul (Bates EGVR page 102, and page 112), and the funeral on 3 Jul (Bates EGVR page 91).
