Jefferson Cooley1

b. 15 September 1800, d. 20 December 1840
     Jefferson Cooley was born on 15 September 1800 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.2 He was the son of Philetus Cooley and Polly Hinman. Jefferson Cooley was graduated at New Haven, New Haven Co., CT. He died on 20 December 1840 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 40.2 He was buried at Cooley Cemetery, Granby, Hartford Co., CT.2

According to the Cooley Genealogy, Jefferson taught for 10 years in the public schools of Granby, and meantime (1829-32) studied law under the direction of Jered Griswold of Hartford; and was admitted to the bar, though he never practiced. In 1836 he became the Preceptor of the Academy in Poughkeepsie, NY; a year later, Principal of the Academy in Sharon, Ct. In 1838 he resumed teaching in Granby and was thus occupied until his health failed.

Sherman Cooley

b. 14 March 1806, d. 20 February 1888
     From the Coley Genealogy:

Sherman Cooley emigrated to Trumbull Co., Ohio, in 1832, and from there to Belmont, Wis., in 1857. In 1870 he bought 55 acres of farmland in Grant Co., Wis., later enlarging his home place to 100 acres, with fine imporvements. his house was two-storied, 18x24 in size; the barn was 34 x 40, with a basement stable.

In politics a Democrat, in religion a free thinker, Sherman Cooley was a man of repute in his places of residence. he held the office of Justice of the Peace in Trumbull co., Ohio, and Grant Co., Wis. He served on the School Board in Wisconsin. On Oct. 4, 1880, he an dhis wife celebrated their Golden Wedding in Lima, Grant Co., Wis. Among other guests (there were 17 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren) was Morgan Cooley, Sherman's younger brother, who related the story of Sherman's wedding at the Granby meeting-house, and recalled how the bride and groom wre dressed. "Sherman wore a swallow-tailed coat, and a bell-crowned plug hat; the bride wore a drab-colored silk dress, a white belt around the waist with a sash attached, and a deep ruffle around the neck, and a white silk headdress." The white belt, having turned golden in the fifty years since, was worn by Mrs. Diana (Day) Cooley at her Golden Wedding. Sherman Cooley was born on 14 March 1806 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Parley Cooley and Deborah Holcombe. Sherman Cooley married Diana Day, daughter of Giles Day II and Hannah Cutler, in October 1830 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. Sherman Cooley died on 20 February 1888 at Platteville, Grant Co., WI, at age 81.
