Orrin Grant Holcombe was born on 22 July 1872.1 He was the son of Ethan Allen Holcombe and Martha Price. Orrin Grant Holcombe died on 17 December 1896 at Atlantic City, Atlantic Co., NJ, at age 24.1 He was buried on 21 December 1896 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Linn Co., IA.1
From the Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette, 18 Dec 1896:
Last night the sad news was received that Orin Holcomb had passed away in Atlantic City, N. J. He had been teaching in the Neff School of oratory in Philadelphia, and on Thanksgiving Day went to Atlantic City, where he was taken sick with typhoid fever. Since then he has been lying at death's door.
His sister, Miss Patsy Holcomb, left her work with the Clara Schumann orchestra to attend her brother. The best of medical aid and trained nurses were in attendance, but of no avail. Mr. Holcomb is survived by his sister, Miss Patsy and his parents Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Holcomb of this city, to whom the loss is doubly great, following the illness of the mother and the death a couple of years ago of an older sister, Miss Burton Holcomb.
The deceased was one of the most popular young men that ever resided in Cedar Rapids. Hews a talented musician and was always in demand. His circle of friends and acquaintances, made from his pleasant manner on such occasions, was very large. He was a graduate of the Cedar Rapids high school, and for some years attended Buchtell College at Akron, Ohio. He was an accomplished young man and the mainstay of his family.
From the Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette, 21 Dec 1896:
The funeral services of Orin Holcomb who died at Atlantic City, N.J. Thursday, Dec. 17, after three weeks illness, were held this afternoon. The remains were brought to the city yesterday and Miss Patsy Holcomb, the bereaved sister, with Miss Pierce, who had been engaged to the deceased, wee the sorrowful escorts.
Rev. J. H. Palmer conducted the services this afternoon, making very brief but appropriate remarks. A large number of the friends and admirers of the deceased were present and formed the funeral procession to Oak Hill, where interment took place.
