(December 28, 1923 - May 24, 2011)
Memorial services for Dewey J. Turner will be held Friday, May 27, 2011 at 3:00 P.M. at the Newton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ed Saunders and Rev. Michael Hollis officiating.
Newton County Funeral Home North, 9998 Hwy. 15 North, Newton, is in charge of arrangements.
Born on December 28, 1923 in Monroe, Michigan, Dewey J. Turner, joined his beloved wife, Annabelle Holcomb Turner at the Lord's table on May 24, 2011. Mr. Turner, 51 year resident of Newton, Mississippi, was a man of many accomplishments. Key among these were his opening the La-Z-Boy Chair Company plant in Newton in 1960. He served as Vice- President of that plant for 26 years, bringing the Newton plant consistently to the forefront of the company's production for many years running.
What was less known about Mr. Turner was his impressive military record. He enlisted in the Navy at age 17 to join his two brothers to fight in World War II. After serving honorably in that war, he was recalled to serve in the Korean conflict as a helicopter pilot. He was through and through an example of "The Greatest Generation".
He loved his family and was devoted to their well-being. He is survived by his daughters: Susan Turner Harris of Newton; Trudy Turner Madrid (Jay J. Madrid) of Dallas, along with granddaughters Kristen Harris Thorne (Matthew Thorne) of Newton, Jody Madrid Swartzwelder (Grant Swartzwelder) and Mandy Madrid Grassley (Joseph Grassley) of Dallas, and four great-grandchildren: Abbey Swartzwelder (8), Kate Swartzwelder (4), Brady Thorne (2), and Mia Grassley (9 months), all of whom he dearly loved.
He loved his church family, and for many years was an avid golfer who loved to compete with his golfing buddies. In his later years, he turned his wood-working capabilities into making beautiful crosses for friends and family. It was no coincidence that one of those same crosses adorned his neck on his day of passing.
He was preceded in death by: His Wife that he dearly loved: Annabelle Holcomb Turner His Parents: George Dewey and Clara May Snavely Turner His Brothers: Ralph Turner and John Turner.
