Drayton Charles Holcomb, 97, of Suffield and formerly of Granby, beloved husband for 63 years of the late Lois Caroline (Petit) Holcomb, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, (September 26, 2013) in Granby. Born in East Granby on March 2, 1916, son of the late Chester H. and Rebecca M. (Phelps) Holcomb, he was raised on Hungary Road in Granby and had lived in North Granby for many years before moving to Suffield in 1989. After the Connecticut River flooded Hartford in 1936, Drayton took a position with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to restore the areas in the city that were affected by the flood. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army after the outbreak of World War II and served in the 309th Infantry Regiment until his honorable discharge in 1946. Drayton worked as a fabricator of helicopter blades at Kaman Aerospace in Bloomfield for over 21 years until his retirement in 1971. In his spare time, he enjoyed volunteering at the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum in Somers, fishing, riding his bicycle, and spending time with his family. He was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Granby. Most of all, he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He leaves two daughters, Holly Condon and her husband John of West Suffield and Judy Holcomb of Brimfield, MA; a brother, George Holcomb and his wife Grace of Fort Worth, TX; a sister, Catherine Gibson Graham and her husband Jim of Green Cove, FL; five grandchildren, Neal Condon, John Condon, Sarah Devine and her husband Christopher, Kirsten Doherty and her husband Peter, and Valerie Keith and her husband Jamey; and seven great grandchildren, Ashley Condon, Nicholas Condon, John Condon, Miranda Condon, Elizabeth Devine, Emma Keith, and Aidan Doherty. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Carlton Holcomb; and a sister, Edith Gibson. His family will receive friends on Monday, September 30, 10:30-11:30 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:30 a.m., at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby. Burial will be private in Copper Hill Cemetery, East Granby. Edith (Holcomb) Gibson, 90, of Granby, formerly of Suffield, wife of the late George R. Gibson, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, (January 17, 2009) at St. Francis Hospital. A kind, caring, loving, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend, she was cherished in life and will be greatly missed by many. Born on April 15, 1918 in East Granby, Edith was the daughter of the late Chester and Rebecca (Phelps) Holcomb. Following her graduation from Simsbury High School in 1936, Edie began a lifetime devoted to family and community service. She was a lifelong member of the Copper Hill United Methodist Church, and an active participant in the Acorn Button Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution in Suffield and the Suffield Historical Society. Edie nurtured her interest in genealogy and photography, and through her passion for reading and writing, became a published poet. She leaves a son, Richard R. Gibson and his wife Carol of East Windsor; a daughter, Rebecca Gibson-Laemel and her husband Robert Laemel of Georgetown, TX; two brothers, Drayton Holcomb of Granby and George Holcomb and his wife Grace Ann of Ft. Worth, TX; a sister, Catherine Graham and her husband, James, of Green Cove Springs, FL, two grandchildren, Kimberly DiCioccio and her husband, David and Bradley Gibson; and four great-grandchildren, Luke DiCioccio, and Cody, Jared, and Jordan Keillor. She was predeceased by a son, Ronald Gibson, a brother, Carlton Holcomb and a grandson, R. A. Gibson. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 11:30 a.m. at the Hayes Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby. Burial will take place in the Spring at West Suffield Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday prior to the service from 10-11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Carlton C. Holcomb, Sr., 85, of Jupiter, FL, formerly of North Granby, died Monday, (sept. 5, 2005), in Stuart, FL. Born in Suffield, February 17, 1920, son of the late Chester H. and Rebecca (Phelps) Holcomb, he grew up in Granby. He graduated from Simsbury High School in 1938. Carlton sserved in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a pilot during WWII, after 29 years of service he retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserves, 905th Group, 337 Troup Carrier Squadron at Westover AFT, as a Lt. Col. and Squadron Commander. He was enployed at Pratt & Whitney for over 20 years, teaching Advance Math in addition to his job as Supervisor of Quality Control. He moved with Pratt & Whitney to Florida a couple of years prior to his retirement in 1979. Carlton served on the Granby Board of Education for 8 years. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Granby and served on the Building Committee. He was a member of the Granby Ambulance Assn. when it first started, worked on teh Granby Community Fund and was a member of the Granby Lion's Club. In Florida, he was active in Real Estate, community programs including the Rotary International and the Loxahatchee Historical Society where he was fund raising Chairman for the Historical Museum. He was predeceased by his first wife, Vivian (Diters) Holcomb, and his second wife, Jane (Curtiss) Beaumont Holcomb, and a daughter-in-law, Susan Casassa Holcomb. He leaves a son, Carlton C. Holcomb, Jr., of Norfolk; two daughters, Linda Dee and her husband, James White, of Baggs, WY, Susan Holcomb Voudren of Tolland, MA; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren and a great-great granddaughter, Madeline. Carlton also leaves two brothers and sisters-in-law, Crayton C. and Lois Holcomb, of West Suffield, George H. and Grace (Honey) Holcomb of Lake Worth, TX; two sisters, Edith Gibson of Suffield and Katherine (Sweatland Gibson) and Jim Graham of Green Cove Springs, FL. Mary Harding1

     Mary Harding was born on 17 May 1919 at Columbus, Franklin Co., OH.1 She was the daughter of Dr. George Tryon Harding Jr. and Elsie Weaver.1 Mary Harding died on 26 February 2012 at Houston, Harris Co., TX, at age 92.1 She was buried at Forest Park Cemetery, Houston, Harris Co., TX.1

Mary Harding Hoffman was born on the 17th of May 1919, in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of Dr. George T. Harding, Jr. and Elsie Weaver Harding. She was a niece of U.S. President, Warren G. Harding. She died on Sunday, the 26th of February 2012, in Houston, where she had lived since 1957.

Mrs. Hoffman was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Philip G. Hoffman, by her son Dr. Philip G. Hoffman, Jr., and by her three brothers, George Tryon Harding, III MD, Warren G Harding, II MD, Dr. Charles W. Harding, and her sister, Dr. Ruth Harding Evans.

She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and J.C. Cobb, Ruth Ann and Dr. Chris Cabler, and Jeanne and Tom Camp; her grandchildren, John Forsyth, Guy Forsyth, Elizabeth Donelson, Benjamin Hoffman, Melanie Camp and Mary Grace Camp; her great grandchildren, Mary Mae Forsyth and James Philip Donelson; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

Mary attended elementary and high school in Worthington, Ohio before graduating from Mt. Vernon (Ohio) Academy. She received her higher education from Columbia Union College in Washington D.C. and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She also received nursing training at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles.

Mary served as a Board Member of the following organizations: Alley Theater, Y.W.C.A., United Fund, Council of Human Relations, American Red Cross, Women's Public Relations Board, St. Joseph's Hospital and Lamar Towers. She was a member of Women of Rotary, Pan American Roundtable (Director 1983-1984), ARCS (Achievement Awards for College Scientists), University of Houston Women's Association, and Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1984 she received the Great Texans Award of the National Foundation of Ileitis and Colitis. She is an Honorary Member of the Mortar Board. She is a charter member of Park Plaza Hospital and has served as a volunteer since 1975.

As "first lady" of the University of Houston from 1961-1979, she made an outstanding contribution to the University, and to "town and gown" relations. The University of Houston established the Mary Harding Hoffman Scholarship in her honor. The Houston City Council, by proclamation, designated March 13, 1979 as Mary Harding Hoffman Day in recognition of her many contributions to the Houston Community. In 2005 Mary was honored by the University of Houston in the naming of the Mary Hoffman Faculty and Staff Lounge in the University Library.

Her many friends will remember her warm and friendly disposition and genuine concern for their welfare. Her family will miss her unfailing love and support, and her sense of humor. Mary was truly a lighting presence upon all she met and loved.

The family would like to acknowledge the loving care and support of the staff at the Hallmark where Mary spent the last three and one half years of her life.

Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family and share remembrances of Mary from two until five o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 3rd of March, in the Drawing Room of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

At a later date, the family is to gather for a private interment service, where Mary and her husband, the late Dr. Philip Hoffman, will be inurned together at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Mrs. Hoffman's name be directed to the Mary Harding Hoffman Scholarship Fund at the University of Houston, care of Jeanne H.
