John Rogers1
b. 1 December 1648, d. 17 October 1721
John and Elizabeth were zealous members of the Congregational Church (under the "Halfway Covenant") until 1674 when he was converted and began to study the bible with great earnestness. He son cmae to the conclusion that certain doctrines and customs of the Congregational Church had no scriptural origin. Elizabeth joined with him in that opinion and in openly avowing it. Her relatives, however, were much alarmed at this course; they labored to convince her that her husband was deluded, and with such success that she was soonled to assure him that unless he would return to his former church allegiance she could not continue to live with him. He declared it impossible for him to accept doctrines and customes which conflicted with scriptural teachings. She accordingly returned to her father's house, taking her two children with her.
Shortly after this, Elizabeth petitioned the court for a divorce, basing her claim upon some youthful error committed by John previous to their marriage, of which he had told her in confidence, while under conviction of sin, at the period of his conversion, and to which she had evidently attached no such importance at the time. The case came before the grand jury. They returned the verdict, "We find not the bill."
By the aid of powerful influence, however, the Griswolds finaly succeeded in obtaining the divorce fromthe General Court, ostensibly on the charge made in Elizabeth's petition.
The court, after granting the divorce, gave the children, "for the present" into the custody of the mother, on account of the "hettridoxy" fo the father, as shown not only by his breachof ecclesiactical laws but also by his open avowal of his intention of continuing in the same. James Rogers. John Rogers was born on 1 December 1648 at Milford, New Haven Co., CT. He was the son of James Rogers and Elizabeth Rowland. John Rogers married Elizabeth Griswold, daughter of Matthew Griswold and Anna Wolcott, on 17 October 1670 at Blackhall, Lyme, CT. John Rogers died on 17 October 1721 at New London, CT, at age 72.

b. 6 January 1643, d. 18 February 1709/10
Henry Wolcott was born on 6 January 1643. He was the son of Henry Wolcott and Sarah Newberry. Henry Wolcott married Abiah Goffe, daughter of Edward Goffe, on 12 October 1664 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.2 Henry Wolcott died on 18 February 1709/10 at age 67.
Henry was elected a member of the House of Deputies in 1686 and subsequently he was for many years the Town Clerk of Windsor.
It had been the expectation of his father that, as the only surviving son, he would succeed to the possession of the real estate which the first Henry wolcott left in England, and which had descended by will, first to his eldest son, the second Henry Wolcott, and then to his;IT] eldest son, the third Henry Wolcott. It was their evident desire that the property should remain in the family,in the possession of the eldest heir in the male line. On the death of the third Henry, without male lissue surviving, it naturally reverted to the heirs of his two daughters, Mrs. Allyn and Mrs. Chauncy. Their claim was contested by the heirs in the male line. The suit was regarded with much interest in the Colony, as it was supposed to involve the question whether the English law of primogeniture and entail whould be recognized in this country. The claim of the Wolcotts was disallowed, and the property was divided between the Allyns and the Chauncys. The decision caused some unpleasant feeling in the family; and Benjamin, the son of John Wolcott, proceeded to England, and took personal possession of the property, which caused difficulty there. The demands of the Wolcotts whether legal or not, were subsequently purchased by Colonel Allyn. so much of the estate as remained in the possession of this heirs in 1787 was disposed of at that time by Henry Allyn, Esq., for £850 sterling.
