Lorinda Buell was born on 4 February 1795 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Peter Frederick Buell and Rosanna Case. Lorinda Buell married Hull Holcombe, son of Lt. Benjah Philo Holcombe and Mary Case, on 11 May 1811 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. Lorinda Buell died on 2 March 1866 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 71. She was buried at Center Cemetery, Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.

     Peter Frederick Buell was also known as Peter Franklin Buell. He was born on 25 January 1764 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.⁴ He was the son of Capt. Solomon Buell and Lydia Case. Peter Frederick Buell married Rosanna Case, daughter of Hosea Case and Mary Case, on 15 April 1788 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.⁴ Peter Frederick Buell died on 10 June 1827 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 63.⁴

     Rosanna Case was born on 6 May 1766 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.³ She was the daughter of Hosea Case and Mary Case. Rosanna Case married Peter Frederick Buell, son of Capt. Solomon Buell and Lydia Case, on 15 April 1788 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.⁴ Rosanna Case died on 21 October 1839 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 73.

     Allen was pastor of the Congregational Church of Simsbury, Ct. Rev. Allen McLean married Mary Loomis, daughter of Ensign Jabez Loomis and Mary Ferry, on 6 December 1744. Rev. Allen McLean died on 9 April 1786. He witnessed the marriage of Hull Holcombe and Lorinda Buell on 11 May 1811 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.

     Hosea Case was born on 3 March 1734 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Joseph Case and Hannah Humphrey. Hosea Case married Mary Case, daughter of Thomas Case and Elizabeth Woodford, on 11 April 1751 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. Hosea Case died on 7 May 1793 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 59.

     Mary Case was born on 5 August 1732 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Thomas Case and Elizabeth Woodford. Mary Case married Hosea Case, son of Joseph Case and Hannah Humphrey, on 11 April 1751 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. Mary Case married Richard Case, son of Sgt. Richard Case and Mercy Holcombe, on 26 January 1795. Mary Case died on 29 July 1817 at age 84.

     Josephine Alderman was born circa 1848 at OH.¹ She was the daughter of Lorenzo Alderman and Evaline Alderman.¹ Josephine Alderman married Oren Childs.²

     Edmund Buell Hull Holcombe was born on 23 November 1814 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Hull Holcombe and Lorinda Buell. Edmund Buell Hull Holcombe married Harriet Elizabeth Gavette on 12 February 1840 at Argyle, NY. Edmund Buell Hull Holcombe married Angeline Sophia Oatley, daughter of Joseph Oatley and Elizabeth Wells, on 10 September 1860 at Blanford, Hampden Co., MA. Edmund Buell Hull Holcombe died on 5 February 1878 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 63. He was buried at Simsbury Cemetery, Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.³

Edmund B. H. Holcomb was born in Simsbury and educated in the district schools. He grew up on a farm and when a young man peddled Yankee notions throughout the states of New York and Massachusetts, as well as in Connecticut. Later he engaged in mercantile business in North Adams, Massachusetts until 1849, when he became an argonaut, voyaging to California in a sailing vessel around Cape Horn. After two years prospecting, with fair success, he returned to his native home, making the trip by water and located in Granby where he bought a farm and spent the balance of his life engaging principally in general farming. He greatly improved his farm, died there in 1878 and was buried in Simsbury.

A bible available through the Salmon Brook Historical Society and the Probate records record Edmund's death in 1878.

Harriet was enumerated in the 1860 Granby, Hartford Co., CT census in the household of David L. Phelps, age 28. Also enumerated were Cornelia, Gavett, and Benajah.

Widower Edmund was enumerated in the 1860 Granby, Hartford Co., CT, census with Cornelia, Gavette, Benajah, and Joseph. His mother Lorinda and sister Laura were also in the household.

Edmund and Angeline were enumerated in the 1870 Granby, Hartford Co., CT, census. Joseph, Walter, and Hattie were still in the household.

Widow Angeline was enumerated in the 1880 Granby, Hartford Co., CT, census with children Walter and Hattie, and with sister-in-law Laura.

     Burt Holcombe was born on 14 April 1819 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Hull Holcombe and Lorinda Buell. Burt Holcombe married Lucinda Ashmore on 12 October 1854. Burt Holcombe died on 16 January 1883 at age 63.

BURT HOLCOMB, ex-sheriff, Paris; was born in Hartford Co., Conn., April 18 1817; he remained at his birthplace until 16 years of age, when he embarked as mercantile traveler through the Eastern States until 1849, when he crossed the plains to California, and there entered into the stock business, in which he continued until 1852, then returned to Ohio (Urbana); in 1852, he came to Edgar Co. and bought land, and engaged in farming and stock dealing; then, in 1857, removed to Henry Co., Mo., and engaged in the mercantile and stock business, and continued until 1861, when he began stock-contracting for the army; he returned and located in Paris in 1864, continuing in handling stock until 1872, when he was elected Sheriff of Edgar Co., and re-elected in 1874, since which time he has looked after the affairs of his property and family. He married Miss Lucinda Ashmore, of this county, September, 1854; they have a family of five children-----Nancy C., Edmond W., Ulysses H., John T. and Jennie. Sarah, Laura, Dick, Burt A., and Walter are buried in Edgar Cemetery and are the only stones on the family plot. Burt, Lucinda, Tim, Jenie and Usher do not have stones.



Burt was enumerated in the 1850 Sacraamento, CA, federal census, age 33. Burt and Lucinda were enumerated in the 1860 Grand River, Henry Co., MO federal census. He was 43, she was 29. Children in the household were Dick B. 6, Nancy J. 5, and Edmund 6 months. Burt and Lucinda were enumerated in the 1870 Paris, Edgar Co., IL, federal census. He was a horse dealer, age 53, she was 41. Children in the household were Nancy J. 15, Edmund W. 10, Ulysses H. 5, and John T 3. Burt and Lucinda were enumerated in the 1880 Paris, Edgar Co., IL, federal census. He was 63, she was 51. Children in the household were Edward 20, Hull 15, John 12, and Jennie 6.

     Oren Childs was born circa 1847.¹ He married Josephine Alderman, daughter of Lorenzo Alderman and Evaline Alderman.¹

     Hull Holcombe was born on 23 March 1819. He was the son of Hull Holcombe and Lorinda Buell. Hull Holcombe died on 26 June 1819. He was buried at Simsbury Cemetery, Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.^2,3

     In one place Seth shows the birth month as April, in the other, August. Nancy Rachel Holcombe was born on 28 April 1820 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Hull Holcombe and Lorinda Buell. Nancy Rachel Holcombe married Asa Hoskins on 19 October 1846. Nancy Rachel Holcombe died on 22 April 1865 at age 44. She was buried at Simsbury Cemetery, Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.²

     Laura was enumerated in the 1870 Granby, Hartford Co., CT, census, adjacent to her brother Edmund. She was living alone.

Laura was enumerated in the 1880 Granby, Hartford Co., CT, census, in the household of her widowed sister-in-law Angeline; Laura died unmarried. Laura Holcombe was born on 1 June 1823. She was the daughter of Hull Holcombe and Lorinda Buell. Laura Holcombe died on 21 November 1895 at age 72. She was buried at Simsbury Cemetery, Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.²

     Gilbert Griffin was the son of Aristarchus Griffin. Gilbert Griffin married Harriet Newell Viets, daughter of Dan Viets and Beula Phelps, on 12 September 1839. Gilbert Griffin died on 7 December 1850 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.

     Harriet Newell Viets was born on 1 January 1818 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Dan Viets and Beula Phelps. Harriet Newell Viets married Gilbert Griffin, son of Aristarchus Griffin, on 12 September 1839. Harriet Newell Viets married Milton Griffin, son of Aristarchus Griffin and Jael Gillet, on 25 April 1852 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. Harriet Newell Viets died on 20 December 1897 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 79.

     Harriet Elizabeth Gavette was born on 12 April 1821 or 25 1821 at Argyle, NY. She married Edmund Buell Hull Holcombe, son of Hull Holcombe and Lorinda Buell, on 12 February 1840 at Argyle, NY. Harriet Elizabeth Gavette died on 22 December 1859 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. She was buried at Simsbury Cemetery, Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹

     Angeline Sophia Oatley was born on 5 March 1830 at MA. She was the daughter of Joseph Oatley and Elizabeth Wells. Angeline Sophia Oatley married Edmund Buell Hull Holcombe, son of Hull Holcombe and Lorinda Buell, on 10 September 1860 at Blanford, Hampden Co., MA. Angeline Sophia Oatley died on 20 December 1883 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 53. She was buried at Simsbury Cemetery, Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹

     Cornelia Frances Holcombe was born on 7 February 1842 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Edmund Buell Hull Holcombe and Harriet Elizabeth Gavette. Cornelia Frances Holcombe died on 2 July 1861 at age 19. She was buried at Simsbury Cemetery, Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹

     Gavette Burt Holcombe was born on 10 June 1845 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Edmund Buell Hull Holcombe and Harriet Elizabeth Gavette. Gavette Burt Holcombe married Ellen Marie Humphrey, daughter of Trumbull Humphrey and Deluna Case, on 1 December 1870. Gavette Burt Holcombe died on 29 January 1914 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 68. He was buried at Simsbury Cemetery, Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.³

They lived across the street from Mr. Ellsworth on what is now "Folly Farm" in the Weatogue Section of Simsbury, east of the Farmington River. He went to high school in Westfield, Massachusetts. He enlisted on August 8, 1863 at Hartford in the 16th Connecticut Volunteers, Co. E.

The National Park Service database of the Andersonville Prison, shows that Gavett was a sergeant in the 16th CT Regiment, Company E, Infantry. He was captured April 20, 1864 in Plymouth, NC.

He was at Antietam on September 17, 1862, Fredericksburg, Suffolk, Norfolk, Virginia and Plymouth, North Carolina, where he was taken prisoner April 20, 1864. He was confined in Andersonville prison and at Florence and Charleston, spending eleven months as a prisoner. He was exchanged March 26, 1865. He mustered out 24 June 1965.

After the war he went to Wilbraham Academy, Wilbraham, Massachusetts.

In 1867 he started west and located at Paris, Illinois, where he engaged in mercantile pursuits for a year and then went to the Pacific slope where he became an employee on the Union Pacific railroad for more than a year. He returned to Simsbury and engaged in raising tobacco, dairy farming and general farming.


A Gavette Holcombe was enumerated in the 1870 Southwick, Hampden Co., MA, federal census. He was a farmer, age 25, single, born in CT.


Gavette and Ellen were enumerated in the 1900 Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, federal census, page 7B. He was 55, she was 53. Daughter Grace, age 22, was the only child in the household. James Holcombe, age 30, was a laborer.

     Benajah Edmund Holcombe was born on 27 September 1846 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Edmund Buell Hull Holcombe and Harriet Elizabeth Gavette. Benajah Edmund Holcombe married Nancy C. Holcombe, daughter of Burt Holcombe and Lucinda Ashmore, on 11 August 1875 at Paris, Clark Co., IL. Benajah Edmund Holcombe died in April 1903 at age 56. He died on 30 March 1904 at age 57. He was buried at Valley Center, San Diego Co., CA.

He enlisted in the First Regiment, Connecticut Heavy Artillery, serving three and a half years. Due to impaired health from the war, he moved to Mariposa County, California, later settling near Valley Center, San Diego County, California where he improved a ranch and engaged in dairying and raising grain.

     Joseph Wells Holcombe was born on 4 March 1853 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.^2,3 He was the son of Edmund Buell Hull Holcombe and Harriet Elizabeth Gavette. Joseph Wells Holcombe married Mary Ellen Lowrey, daughter of Alfred Lowrey and Elnora Goodsell, on 24 October 1878 at Whigville, Burlington, Hartford Co., CT.^2,3 Joseph Wells Holcombe died on 5 March 1928 at Hartford, Hartford Co., CT, at age 75.^2,3 He was buried at Simsbury Cemetery, Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.⁴

He went to Paris, Illinois for a year, then to Texas for a while, returning to the homestead where he remained until 1881; he bought the Humphrey place at the corner of Barn Door Hills Road and County Road, Granby, Connecticut.

Joseph and Mary were enumerated in the 1880 Granby, Hartford Co., CT, census with hired help Lyman Phelps and Charles Higley in the household.

Joseph and Mary were enumerated in the 1900 Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, federal census, page 7B. He was 47, she was 46. Children in the household were Elnora, Ethel, Edmund, and Theona.

Joseph W. and Mary E. were enumerated in the 1910 Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, federal census. He was a farmer age 57, she was 56. Children in the household were Ethel M. 24, Edmond A. 21, and Theona L. 19.

Joseph was recorded in the 1920 Simsbury census, district 183, page 5A, line 3, living in the same house as son Edmund.

Mary was enumerated in the 1930 Simsbury census in the household of son Edmund. She was 75.

     They lived in the "Ann Toy" house, north side of Hartford Avenue, East Weatogue section of Simsbury, Connecticut. He was a farmer.

Walter was recorded in the 1900 Granby census, page 7A, line 22, as a farmer, age 38 with his family.

Walter was recorded in the 1920 Simsbury census, district 183, page 5A, line 13, age 58, with Jennie. Walter Burnside Holcombe was born on 14 November 1861 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Edmund Buell Hull Holcombe and Angeline Sophia Oatley. Walter Burnside Holcombe married Jennie Mary Herrick, daughter of Henry Knox Herrick and Sarah Elizabeth Parks, on 13 December 1883 at Blandford, MA. Walter Burnside Holcombe died on 6 March 1926 at age 64. He was buried at Simsbury Cemetery, Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.^2,3

     Harriet Cornelia Holcombe was born on 29 December 1863 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Edmund Buell Hull Holcombe and Angeline Sophia Oatley. Harriet Cornelia Holcombe married Albert Henry Nye, son of Lewis Clark Nye and Melinda Cook, on 3 June 1885 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. Harriet Cornelia Holcombe died on 16 May 1915 at "Missing Place" no. 6209 at age 51.

     Nathan Gillett Jr. was the son of Nathan Gillett and Lucy Harrison. Nathan Gillett Jr. married Abigail Wolcott, daughter of Deacon Guy Wolcott and Abigail Allyn.

     Abigail Wolcott was born on 2 July 1785. She was the daughter of Deacon Guy Wolcott and Abigail Allyn. Abigail Wolcott married Nathan Gillett Jr., son of Nathan Gillett and Lucy Harrison.

     Deacon Wolcott removed to Torrington in 1783. Removed to Tallmadge, Ohio in 1822. Deacon Guy Wolcott was born on 7 August 1760. He was the son of Dr. Alexander Wolcott and Mary Richards. Deacon Guy Wolcott married Abigail Allyn on 5 October 1781. Deacon Guy Wolcott died on 2 September 1823 at age 63.

     Seth refers us to "John Case and Descendants", page 51, for more information on Deluna Case. Ellen Marie Humphrey was born on 14 February 1847 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Trumbull Humphrey and Deluna Case. Ellen Marie Humphrey married Gavette Burt Holcombe, son of Edmund Buell Hull Holcombe and Harriet Elizabeth Gavette, on 1 December 1870. Ellen Marie Humphrey died on 29 August 1911 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 64. She was buried at Simsbury Cemetery, Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹

     Trumbull Humphrey was born on 13 March 1808 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Rufus Humphrey and Lucy Case. Trumbull Humphrey married Deluna Case, daughter of Friend Case and Sarah Case, on 25 March 1833 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. Trumbull Humphrey died on 25 April 1864 at age 56.

     Deluna Case was born on 2 June 1809. She was the daughter of Friend Case and Sarah Case. Deluna Case married Trumbull Humphrey, son of Rufus Humphrey and Lucy Case, on 25 March 1833 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. Deluna Case died on 2 November 1880 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 71.

     Thomas Case was born on 28 June 1702 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.² He was the son of Bartholomew Case and Mary Humphrey. Thomas Case married Elizabeth Woodford, daughter of Joseph Woodford, on 4 October 1727 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. Thomas Case died on 3 September 1770 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 68.

     Elizabeth Woodford was born on 22 July 1707 at Farmington, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Joseph Woodford. Elizabeth Woodford married Thomas Case, son of Bartholomew Case and Mary Humphrey, on 4 October 1727 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. Elizabeth Woodford died on 15 December 1784 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 77.

     Rufus Humphrey was born on 26 November 1770 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Sylvanus Humphrey and Charity Pettibone. Rufus Humphrey married Lucy Case, daughter of Moses Case and Lucy Wilcox, on 26 June 1790. Rufus Humphrey died on 3 March 1844 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 73.
