He grew up on a farm and when a young man peddled Yankee notions throughout the states of New York and Massachusetts, as well as in Connecticut. Later he engaged in mercantile business in North Adams, Massachusetts until 1849, when he became an argonaut, voyaging to California in a sailing vessel around Cape Horn. After two years prospecting, with fair success, he returned to his native home, making the trip by water and located in Granby where he bought a farm and spent the balance of his life engaging principally in general farming. He greatly improved his farm, died there in 1878 and was buried in Simsbury.
A bible available through the Salmon Brook Historical Society and the Probate records record Edmund's death in 1878.

He married Miss Lucinda Ashmore, of this county, September, 1854; they have a family of five children-----Nancy C., Edmond W., Ulysses H., John T. and Jennie. Gavette Burt Holcombe1,2

Gavette Burt Holcombe was born on 10 June 1845 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Edmund Buell Hull Holcombe and Harriet Elizabeth Gavette. Gavette Burt Holcombe married Ellen Marie Humphrey, daughter of Trumbull Humphrey and Deluna Case, on 1 December 1870. Gavette Burt Holcombe died on 29 January 1914 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 68. He was buried at Simsbury Cemetery, Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.3
They lived across the street from Mr. Ellsworth on what is now "Folly Farm" in the Weatogue Section of Simsbury, east of the Farmington River. He went to high school in Westfield, Massachusetts. He enlisted on August 8, 1863 at Hartford in the 16th Connecticut Volunteers, Co. E.
The National Park Service database of the Andersonville Prison, shows that Gavett was a sergeant in the 16th CT Regiment, Company E, Infantry. He was captured April 20, 1864 in Plymouth, NC.
He was at Antietam on September 17, 1862, Fredericksburg, Suffolk, Norfolk, Virginia and Plymouth, North Carolina, where he was taken prisoner April 20, 1864. He was confined in Andersonville prison and at Florence and Charleston, spending eleven months as a prisoner. He was exchanged March 26, 1865. He mustered out 24 June 1965.

After the war he went to Wilbraham Academy, Wilbraham, Massachusetts.
In 1867 he started west and located at Paris, Illinois, where he engaged in mercantile pursuits for a year and then went to the Pacific slope where he became an employee on the Union Pacific railroad for more than a year. He returned to Simsbury and engaged in raising tobacco, dairy farming and general farming.
A Gavette Holcombe was enumerated in the 1870 Southwick, Hampden Co., MA, federal census. He was a farmer, age 25, single, born in CT.
Gavette and Ellen were enumerated in the 1900 Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, federal census, page 7B. He was 55, she was 53. Daughter Grace, age 22, was the only child in the household. James Holcombe, age 30, was a laborer.

Benajah Edmund Holcombe was born on 27 September 1846 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Edmund Buell Hull Holcombe and Harriet Elizabeth Gavette. Benajah Edmund Holcombe married Nancy C. Holcombe, daughter of Burt Holcombe and Lucinda Ashmore, on 11 August 1875 at Paris, Clark Co., IL. Benajah Edmund Holcombe died in April 1903 at age 56. He died on 30 March 1904 at age 57. He was buried at Valley Center, San Diego Co., CA.
He enlisted in the First Regiment, Connecticut Heavy Artillery, serving three and a half years. Due to impaired health from the war, he moved to Mariposa County, California, later settling near Valley Center, San Diego County, California where he improved a ranch and engaged in dairying and raising grain.
