George Seymour Goddard1

b. 17 June 1865, d. 12 February 1936
     George Seymour Goddard was born on 17 June 1865 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Harvey Goddard and Sabra Lavinia Beach. George Seymour Goddard married Kate Estelle Dewey, daughter of Watson Dewey and Ellen Jane Beebe, on 23 June 1897 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. George Seymour Goddard died on 12 February 1936 at Hartford, Hartford Co., CT, at age 70. He was buried on 14 February 1936 at Center Cemetery, Granby, Hartford Co., CT.

George attended Granby public schools and Wesleyan Academy, Wilbraham, Massachusets; received an A.B. from Wesleyan Univeristy in Middletown, Connecticut in 1892; and attended Garrett Biblical Institute at Northwestern University 1892-94. He transferred to yale Divinity School in the fall of 1894, receiving a B.D. from Yale University in 1895. He was later to receive honorary M.A.s from Wesleyan in 1912 and Trinity Colege in 1919.

Godard taught school in Granby in 1882-83 and enrolled at Wesleyan in fall of 1887; however, he left at the end of his junior year to "assist in the building and installation of the Cossitt Library n North Granby". He ws appointed librarian of the Cossitt Library in Granby in 1890. In August 1898, godard became asistant to State Librarian Charles J. Hoadly. Following Hoadly's death in November 1900, he was appointed State Librarian.

For genealogists and historians, Godard is best remembered as the person who envisioned a set of genealogical indexes and hired Lucius B. Barbour and Charles R. Hale to spearhead those projects.

     Watson Dewey was born circa 1814 at CT.1 He married Ellen Jane Beebe.

Watson and Susan were enumerated in the 1850 Granby, Hartford Co., CT, federal census. He was a carriage maker, age 36, she was 25. Children in the household were George 9, and Jay 4. Also in the household were his employees, Harvey Holcomb 27, Scott Hayes 20, Arlington Daniels 18, Charles Holcombe 18, Nelson Godard 17, and Nancy McKinney, 20. Watson built more than 100 carriages per year.

Watson and Ellen were enumerated in the 1860 Granby, Hartford Co., CT, census with George M. age 19 (Ellen was 27), Betsey, age 4, and Edward, age 2.

The Granby Vital records show a marriage of Watson Dewey to Jane Alderman in 1840, despite little other proof, that marriage and family are placed here.

     Roland Holcombe was born circa 1816 at Shenango, Mercer Co., PA.1 He was the son of Luman Holcombe and Chloe Alderman. Roland Holcombe married Nancy (?) circa 1847.1

Roland and Nancy were enumerated in the 1850 Chenango, Broome Co., NY, federal census. He was a farmer, age 33, she was 33. The only child in the household was George, 7 months. Also in the household was Luman Holcombe, 68.

"Rolon M." and Nancy A. were enumerated in the 1860 Colesville, Broome Co., NY federal census. He was a farmer, age 39, she was 40. Children in the household were George L. 10, Belton M. 9, Alderman B. 5, and Viola C. 2.

Rolan and Nancy were enumerated in the 1870 Colesville, Broome Co., NY, federal census. He was a farmer, age 52, she was 52. Children in the household were George 20, Burton 19, and Adaline 15.

It appears that Nancy is enumerated in the 1880 Windsor, Broome Co., NY, federal census in the houehold of Edward Harvey, as a servant, age 63.

There was a Burton Holcombe in the 18809 Colesville census, age 28, married to Emma, age 25, with a Phebe West in the household listed as "mother", probably mother-in-law. There is no evidence that this Burton is the same as the son of Roland and Nancy.

Benjamin Knowlton died on 31 July 1809 at age 80.

Ishmael enlisted, June 7, 1847, Monmouth, Warren Co., IL, reciting age as 31 years, as a private in Capt. Stapp's Co., IL, Mounted Vols; promoted to Sgt.

Ishmael's widow, Clarinda, and her second husband, Jacob L. Buzan, were enumerated in the 1860 Monmouth City, Warren Co., IL, federal census, page 192. Clarinda was 39, Juliette was 18, Amelia 17, Melissa 16, Ellen 14. Clarissa Buzan was 6.

There is another family in the 1860 Monmouth Township, Warren Co., IL, federal census that must be related but how is unknown, but they are listed here to, hopefully identify them later.

H. B. and Phoebe Holcombe were enumerated in the 1860 Monmouth Township, Warren Co., IL, federal census, page 217. He was a master carpenter, born in Ohio, age 43; she was born in New York, age 46. Children in the household were Henrietta J. age 16, Phoebe L. 11, Clarissa M. 9, and Ishmael H. 6.

Deputy clerk, Seppt. 1877; elected clerk until 1883; first vote, in 1844, was for Henry Clay; acted as county auditor 2 years and as county judge one year. Harmon C. Holcombe was born on 23 June 1823 at Lewis, Essex Co., NY. He was the son of Oliver Ellsworth Holcombe and Martha Barber. Harmon C. Holcombe married Elizabeth A. McCoy on 22 November 1862. Harmon C. Holcombe died on 10 February 1908 at age 84.
