Lewis Jr. was raised by his grandparents following the early death of his mother and father.
He enlisted in the 16th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Regiment 28 July 1862, mustered 24 August 1862. Based on these dates he may have served at Antietam.
He was captured at Plymouth, NC, 20 April 1864, and sent to Andersonville and became desperately ill. He was paroled 28 February 1865 and went home following Sherman's march and was nursed back to health only to return to his unit and die three days later.
The National Park Service database of the Andersonville Prison, shows that Lewis was a private in the 16th CT Regiment, Company E, Infantry. He was captured April 20, 1864 in Plymouth, NC.
A letter of leave reads: To all whom it may concern. The bearer here of Lewis M. Holcomb, Private of E Company of the 16th Regiment of Conn Infantry, aged 23 years, 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, and by profession a Farmer, born in the State of Massachusetts, and enlisted at Granby in the State of Connecticut on the 28th day of July 1862 to serve for the period of three years, is hereby permitted to go to Granby . . . he having received a furlough from the 16th day of December 1864 to the 15th day of January 1865, at which period he will rejoin his station at Camp Parole, MD or wherever it then may be, or be considered a deserter.
His is listed on the Granby Civil War Monument.

Left an orphan as a boy and raised by his aunt, Holcomb was very close to his extended family in Granby, including his cousins, Richard Henry Lee and Addie Holcomb. Holcomb was a farmer and teacher before the war, clearly well read and bright. His letters include references to Lord Byron, Alfred Waud, and Shakespeare, among other writers. Apparently, he struck some of his comrades as elitist. Cpl. Leland Barlow once praised Lewis as "a smart fellow and no mistake? And if he had his just dues he would have been Lieut. now; he has been hopped over three times and once by a Corpl; it may be some of his superfluous airs have kept him back perhaps.: although he did not explain his reasons for enlisting, in a letter home, he wrote that the Virginia scenery was "positively delightful," but "under a system of free labor," it would be "more delightful still." Holcomb returned home after his parole from prison but insisted on returning to service, only to die in May 1865 in a Virginia hospital.4
