LeRoy Holcombe1

b. 14 October 1830, d. 8 December 1912
LeRoy Holcombe was born on 14 October 1830 at LeRoy, Bradford Co., PA.2 He was the son of Eli Holcombe II and Harriet Bailey. LeRoy Holcombe married Rhoda Rowena Tillotson on 13 June 1852 at Bradford Co., PA. LeRoy Holcombe married Nettie Scott on 9 March 1886 at Bradford Co., PA.2 LeRoy Holcombe died on 8 December 1912 at Leroy, Bradford Co., PA, at age 82.2 He was buried at Holcomb Cemetery, Leroy, Bradford Co., PA.2

LeRoy was recorded in the 1850 LeRoy, Bradford Co., PA census as a farmer, age 20, in the household of his father Eli.

Leroy and R. R. were recorded in the 1870 LeRoy, Bradford Co., PA federal census as the operator of a grist mill and owner of real estate valued at $4,000. He served as VP of the 1st Holcombe reunion. He was 39, she was 37. Children in the household were C.D. 17, L.V. 15, H.A. 18, F.O. 11, H.A. 8, W.I. 5, and Lewis O. 5 months. Eli and Harriet were next door.

LeRoy was recorded in the 1880 census of LeRoy, age 49, a farmer. Rhoda was not listed, but 5 children and a daughter-in-law were.

LeRoy was enumerated in the 1910 LeRoy, Bradford Co., PA, federal census, apparently with a second wife, Nettie who married when she was 65. She had had no children. Daughter Harriet age 48, apparently divorced was also in the household. She had 4 children, 2 of whom were still alive, but not listed in this household.

LEROY HOLCOMB, farmer and miller, LeRoy township, P. O. LeRoy, was born October 14, 1830, a son of Eli and Harriet (Bailey) Holcomb, who were the first settlers on the south side of Towanda creek.

The father was a native of Connecticut and son of Truman Holcomb of New England, who removed to Ulster in the early settlement of the county. Harriet (Bailey) Holcomb was a native of New York.

Eli Holcomb located in LeRoy in 1801, taking possession of 200 acres on either side of Towanda creek. In those days their facilities were limited, compelling them to go eighteen miles to mill. Eli built the second gristmill in 1827, and the first on the south side of the creek (Hugh Holcomb built the first); it was a log structure, in which LeRoy, when a small lad, learned his trade. In 1844 Eli Holcomb built a mill which was damaged by the giving way of the dam; it was rebuilt and is now owned and operated by his son LeRoy.

Eli was the father of thirteen children, eleven of whom grew to maturity, LeRoy being the seventh member of the family. He was reared and educated at LeRoy, and learned the miller’s trade of his father, beginning at the age of fourteen.

When twenty-one he married Rhoda R., daughter of Ansel and Anna Tillotson, June 13, 1852, at LeRoy. To them were born ten children - five sons and five daughters - eight of whom grew to maturity and are now living in this county, prosperous business men.

Mr. Holcomb was twice married, his first wife died on January 10, 1880, and he married, March 9, 1886, Nettie, daughter of William and Maria Scott, of Monroe township. He is a man of business and enterprise; in 1855 he built a sawmill north of the present mill; but, on account of the water-power failing, he abandoned it, attaching one to his gristmill, both of which he runs by steam. This mill has the capacity of 10,000 feet per day, and the gristmill averages 15,000 bushels per year. In addition to this Mr. Holcomb oversees a neat farm.

He has been entrusted with various offices during his life time; was constable two years; he is a member of the Church of Christ, and has held the position of superintendent of the Sunday school sixteen years; politically he is a Republican.

b. 22 August 1825, d. 22 October 1908
Samuel Alonzo Rockwell was born on 22 August 1825 at Troy Borough, Bradford Co., PA.2 He was the son of John C. Rockwell and Harriet Andrus. Samuel Alonzo Rockwell married Hannah Holcombe, daughter of Eli Holcombe II and Harriet Bailey, on 11 October 1849.3 Samuel Alonzo Rockwell died on 22 October 1908 at Granville Center, Bradford Co., PA, at age 83.4 He was buried at Granville Center Cemetery, Granville Center, Bradford Co., PA.4

From the 144th Annual Rockwell Reunion Book:
At the time of Samuel Alonzo's diaries dated 1874 and 1882 his parents were living on the road between LeRoy and Granville Center on a site called Mountain Home. Samuel Alonzo was a farmer, teacher, active in the church and the grange, a fairly new organization at the time, was some sort of road supervisor, active in political circles having served in community offices, as Mercantile Appraiser of Bradford County, and was also the Sunday school superintendent at the church in Granville. He was a stern looking man, but a kindly one. He seems to be a man who took a special interest in helping his children and his neighbors, a man who loved to sing and loved music and writing. He did not serve in the Civil War. A certificate of exemption for a drafted person on account of disability was found. It certifies that he had been carefully examined and was found to be unfit for military duty by reason of chronic rheumatism. According to his diaries he had some "bad" days, but nevertheless always seemed to overcome any feelings of illness or depression and continued his daily life.
