James Holcombe

b. circa 1791, d. April 1870
James Holcombe was born circa 1791 at possibly Kingsbury or Westfield (now Ft. Ann), Washington Co., NY.1,2,3 He was the son of Levi Holcombe and Chloe Poisson.2 James Holcombe married Olive Noble, daughter of Joel Noble and Naomi Loomis, on 2 August 1811 at Granville, Washington Co., NY.4,3 James Holcombe married Mary Ann Corbet circa 1854 at possibly Granville, Washington Co., NY.1,3 James Holcombe died in April 1870 at Dresden, Washington Co., NY.2,3

The ancestry of James, the husband of Olive Noble, is confused on the internet.

Recent genealogists have researched this in detail: George McCracken, Robert Eric Holcomb, and Carol Laun. Bob Holcomb has summarized the results below3.

The earliest mention of James7 by a researcher was in Mr. Lucius Boltwood’s book regarding the descendants of Thomas Noble. Mr. Boltwood collected his information during the 1850s and printed his material in 1878. He had first hand knowledge of James7 and Olive’s marriage, family structure, along with her parentage, birth and death, yet offered few details about James other than he was of Granville, Washington County, NY.

In her 1988 book, “Thomas Holcomb and other Simsbury, Connecticut Families”, Ms. Deanna Holcomb Bowman attempted to link James7 as the son of James5 (Consider4, Thomas3, Joshua2, Thomas[SUP]1), a branch of Holcombs that does not contain a single use of the name Levi till one of James'5 first cousins in Pennsylvania named a son Levi. Neglected by most who had claim to her tie-in was the question mark at the start of her entry. Her proofs were limited to name association and the common location of New York State. The 1790 census for James5 was from Kinderhook, NY, one hundred miles south of Granville, NY, which leads us to the conclusion that he was at that time over forty-five years of age, married, and had two older males who were teens and/or early twenties in his household. Other sources, without proofs, add that James5 was married to Ester Ganyard, a descendant of Adam “the mulatto” Rogers (more about this in the DNA section below), and was the James Holcomb who moved to Ohio around 1802 where he did after 1807.

Using the above scenario, James7 would have been about ten years old at the time of the move from New York to Ohio, but nine years later he ended up much further north in New York married to a local girl of standing, and remained there the rest of his life. The more logical story is that James7 began and ended in northern New York, and married the girl next door.

The standard on the pedigree of Levi6 comes from the last page of Mr. George E. McCracken’s 1981 TAG article, “Thomas Holcomb’s Earlier Posterity”, where he listed Levi6 as both the third child and son of Ezra Holcomb and Phebe Gillette. Mr. McCracken’s material relied upon the records that were originally gathered by Rev. Amasa Holcomb in the mid 1800’s, and perpetuated by Dr. William Frederick Holcomb through the early 1900’s (later by Seaver and McPherson, now available at the Connecticut Historical Society). Ms. Bowman developed Levi6 a little further by listing his children, but without details. The most recent information comes from Ms. Carol Laun of the Salmon Brook Historical Society who wrote “Levi[SUP:6:[SUP] Holcomb” and “Ezra5 Holcomb”, that she updated in 2014 after I contacted her in regards to James.

James was a carpenter and joiner in Granville, NY. He must have been a smart usinessman, as he owned quite a bit of property, including a slate operatin and a blacksmith shop in Granville/Whitehall. His second wife was on several land deeds with him and she brought a daughter Ellen (or Helen), b. abt. 1849, NY into the marriage. Childlren Mary Ann and James H. are from this second marriage.3.

James and Olive "Hocum, were enumerated in the 1850 Granvville, Washington Co., NY, federal census. He was a farmer age 57, she was 55. Children in the household were Henry 15, and Esther 20. Also in the household were Polly Noble 72 and Mary Rupel 9.

James Hocum was enumerated in the 1855 Granville, Washington Co., NY, state census. He was 64. Also in the household were Mary his wife, age 14, Phylarmon Jillett, son-in-law age 41, O. C. Jillett, his wife 31, Polly Nobles mother-in-law, 75, and domestic Geo. Hoadley.

James was convicted of lunacy in March 1869. The papers in the Washington Co., NY, archives show his children to be Levi; Linus; Champlain; Cordelia; Eliza; Esther & Henry Holcomb.

James had children over a period of 48 years. He did not have a probate file, but his lunacy hearing shortly before his death does list his children and ws probably the method that his estate was settled. The last two children were minors when he and his second wife died, but there are not any records of a guardianship case.

Olive and James had eleven children.5

James Holcombe and ?James Holcombe have been confused on the internet. Evidence strongly shows that James, the son of Levi, married Olive Noble.
