     Elijah Owen was born in 1706. He was the son of Isaac Owen and Sarah Holcombe. Elijah Owen married Hannah Higley, daughter of Brewster Higley and Hester Holcombe, in 1735. Elijah Owen died in 1741.

     Hannah Higley was born on 17 December 1717 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Brewster Higley and Hester Holcombe. Hannah Higley married Elijah Owen, son of Isaac Owen and Sarah Holcombe, in 1735. Hannah Higley married Pelatiah Mills, son of Capt. Pelatiah Mills and Martha Chapman, on 29 March 1743 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. Hannah Higley died on 25 January 1806 at Wintonbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 88.

     Samuel Hayden was born on 28 February 1677/78. He was the son of Lt. Daniel Hayden and Hannah Willcockson. Samuel Hayden married Anna Holcombe, daughter of Sgt. Benajah Holcombe and Sarah Eno, on 26 January 1703/4.² Samuel Hayden died on 12 October 1742 at Harwinton, Litchfield Co., CT, at age 64.

Samuel, had by gift of his father, the 50-acre lot originally set out to Mr. Stoughton (nearly all of which is now owned and improved by Samuel B. Hayden). Here he was a successful farmer, and reared a respectable family, giving them the best culture the times afforded. A few months before he died, 1742, he went to Harwinton to join his sons who had preceded him. His "western lands" fell to him (by lot or choice) in the town of Harwinton; he also bought the rights of several of his neighbors, of Noah and Henry Stiles, Simon Chapman, and Samuel Eno. The proprietors of the several towns were the individuals to whom lots had been assigned in that town, and the proprietors owned and had control of all the undivided land in their respective towns, in the ratio their own lot bore to those already set out to all the proprietors. Before the proprietors had left Windsor to begin their settlement at Harwinton, they held a proprietors' meeting in Windsor, Aug. 27, 1733, when they voted to lease and farm-let to Samuel Hayden, "the 20 acres sequestered at a former meeting for a gristmill"; fourteen years later, and after the death of Samuel Hayden, at a meeting of the proprietors, 1747, at Harwinton, it was "voted to give William Hayden (son of Samuel) a better title to the mill, 20 acres of land and the stream," on condition "he keep a sufficient gristmill." Ten years later, 1757, Samuel and Nathaniel, sons of Samuel, who remained at Windsor, released their interest in the estate of their father, Samuel, to their brothers Joseph and William, when they specify the same gristmill and twenty acres of land.

The gristmill was probably set up by the sons, Joseph and William, whose names appear among the settlers of Harwinton, as early as 1637, five years before their father removed from Windsor, and who lived in Harwinton only a few months after his removal from Haydens. The old pear tree still waiting (1888), by the site of the old Sam Hayden house at Haydens (which house the writer well remembers), was doubtless planted in his, Samuel's, day, probably by his own hands. A man who saw it, and ate of its pears fifty years after Samuel Hayden went to Harwinton, told me that it was then an old tree. Samuel Hayden died a resident of Harwinton, though a few months before he was "of Windsor."

Anna was a granddaughter of Thomas Holcombe , the immigrant.

She returned to Windsor, and lived with her son Nathaniel, at the old homestead. I have her will, made 1754, twelve years after the death of her husband, in which she says: "I give to my two daughters, Ann Adams and Sarah Lyman, to be equally divided between them, all my wearing clothes, and next I give half my household stuff to my daughter Lyman's two oldest children;" nest she gives to the two oldest children of each her four sons five pounds apiece, the balance of her estate to be divided between her four sons. She signs her name Ann Heydon.³

     Anna Hayden was born on 2 March 1706. She was the daughter of Samuel Hayden and Anna Holcombe.

     Samuel Hayden was born on 7 October 1707 at Haydens, Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Samuel Hayden and Anna Holcombe. Samuel Hayden married Abigal Hall, daughter of Samuel Hall and Sarah Rising, on 7 November 1737 at Somers, CT.² Samuel Hayden died on 30 August 1777 at Conway, MA, at age 69.² He was buried at Howland Cemetery, Conway, MA.²

     Abigal Hall was born on 28 April 1715 at Suffield, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Samuel Hall and Sarah Rising.¹ Abigal Hall was baptized on 28 April 1717 at Suffield, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She married Samuel Hayden, son of Samuel Hayden and Anna Holcombe, on 7 November 1737 at Somers, CT.¹ Abigal Hall died after 11 April 1777.¹

     Deacon Nathaniel Hayden was born on 18 June 1709. He was the son of Samuel Hayden and Anna Holcombe. Deacon Nathaniel Hayden married Naomi Gaylord, daughter of Josiah Gaylord and Naomi Burnham, in 1737. Deacon Nathaniel Hayden died on 14 November 1803 at age 94.

     Naomi Gaylord was born on 3 November 1715.² She was the daughter of Josiah Gaylord and Naomi Burnham.² Naomi Gaylord married Deacon Nathaniel Hayden, son of Samuel Hayden and Anna Holcombe, in 1737. Naomi Gaylord died on 7 April 1803 at age 87.

     Naomi Burnham was born on 3 June 1688.¹ She was the daughter of Thomas Burnham and Naomi Hull. Naomi Burnham married Josiah Gaylord, son of Nathaniel Gaylord and Abigail Bissell, on 7 May 1713.¹

     Esther was a greatgranddaughter of Mathew Grant the immigrant and founder of Windsor. Joseph Hayden was born on 17 November 1711 at Haydens, Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Samuel Hayden and Anna Holcombe. Joseph Hayden married Esther Grant, daughter of Nathaniel Grant and Bethia Warner, on 12 June 1739. Joseph Hayden died on 26 February 1781 at age 69.

     Esther Grant was born on 31 October 1710 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Nathaniel Grant and Bethia Warner. Esther Grant married Joseph Hayden, son of Samuel Hayden and Anna Holcombe, on 12 June 1739. Esther Grant died in 1804.

     William Hayden was born on 13 March 1712/13. He was the son of Samuel Hayden and Anna Holcombe. William Hayden married Mary Hannum on 10 May 1742 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. William Hayden died on 25 December 1790 at age 77.

     Mary Hannum was born say 1708. She married William Hayden, son of Samuel Hayden and Anna Holcombe, on 10 May 1742 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. Mary Hannum died on 21 October 1785.

     Information via e-mail from Bill Lyman wmlyman@alaska.net. Sarah Hayden was born on 17 September 1716. She was the daughter of Samuel Hayden and Anna Holcombe. Sarah Hayden married Moses Lyman, son of Capt. Moses Lyman Jr. and Mindwell Sheldon, in 1742. Sarah Hayden died on 27 August 1808 at Goshen, Litchfield Co., CT, at age 91.

     Moses removed to Goshen, CT in the autumn of 1739, one of the earliest inhabitants of the place, the settlement having been begun the year preceding. Bought and cleared 50 acres of land for his farm, on town hill, where he built first a log house, and in time a framed house, which again gave place to the brick houe on the homestead, which was occupied by the first son of the same name to the present date. (Lyman genealogy by Lyman Coleman, supplement to Lyman genealogy gathered at the Lyman family reunion at the Lyman farm in Ct, by Margaret Lyman.) Moses Lyman was born in 1713. He was the son of Capt. Moses Lyman Jr. and Mindwell Sheldon. Moses Lyman married Sarah Hayden, daughter of Samuel Hayden and Anna Holcombe, in 1742. Moses Lyman died in 1768.

     Anthony Jr., as he was frequently called, was born in Rowley, Mass. Dec. 7, 1668. Like his father, he was uprooted early and at the age of 6 removed to Suffield, Conn., with his parents. He grew up on the farm with his three brothers and two sisters and spent his whole life in Suffield.

Anthony was accounted one of the original proprietors of Suffield, as his father took 40 acres of land for him south of Stony River in 1679. Anthony was then 11 and he must have been mighty proud when his father made him as well as his older brother, Richard, a proprietor. There was no tax incentive for early givts then, either. As early as 1691 when Anthony was 23, he built a one-room house and loft on his father's farm (possibly originally Trumbull's), perhaps to be independent and free from his father's busy household, but still close at hand.

Town activities then drew Anthony's attention; in 1693 he was sent to New Haven to accompany (perhaps guide) a new minister to Suffield. In 1695 he was asked to help negotiate settlement of a bill on the town's behalf and in 1699 did some negotiating with the town on his own behalf. That same year he was elected a surveyor.

On Oct 4, 1699 Anthony married Abigail Holcomb (b. 1681). He was then 31, and she 18. Abigail came from Windsor, Conn., just down the river a way from Suffield. Since the Anthony Austin, Jr. house was built in two parts, one can speculate that Anthony built the main house for his bride and moved the original part ot it to complete it.

By some stroke of good fortune, Anthony's house is still in existence. From a visit to Suffield in 1962 it was learned that the house is being carefully restored, as authentically as modernization of heating, lighting, kitchen and plumbing will perrmit, by its present owners, Mr. and Mrs. Gregor Lang. it is marked "Anthony Austin, Jr., 1691-1727" and is one of the show places of Suffield.

The record continues with Anthony active in town affairs. He was constable and surveyor in 1700, fence viewer in 1703. There was also some strife related to a proposed division of town lands in 1715; Anthony and his brothers were among the many dissenters who were successful in having the division revoked. Later he was on a Petty Jury and at one time a Tything man and was elected to see that the schoolhouse was repaired. He is known to have been a carpenter. In general, Anthony was not as active in town work as his brother John, but he appeared to do his share.

One commercial venture is described in 1721. Anthony with several others developed the second iron works in Suffield. They were still inoperation in 1770. AT abaout this time also, iron was voted acceptable as town pay at 40 shillings per hundred, except minister's salary.

Another fragment--Anthony was addressed as ensign in 1717 and several times thereafter, and presumably participated extensively in local militia activities. Indian fighting continued, of course, for many years. In Anthony's time there frequently were "Guard Pews" on either side of the meeting-house door where armed men sat for protection of the congregation.

Mixed in with farming and public service Anthony and Abigail had a dozen children between 1700 and 1721, of whom 9 survived infancy.

Note the curious custom of using a name a second time when a child died in infancy. This repetition occurs several times in the Austin genealogies and is occasionally confusing. Three times in a single family is a tragic record!

Caleb and Joshua were twins.

Anthony lived out his 65 yeas and died in Suffield Jan 9, 1733. He is buried back of the First Congregational Church in Suffield, where a headstone still exists. He was not counted as a communicant of the church, but his wife Abigail was so listed and that must have sufficed to give him admittance to the holy ground.
Ensign Anthony Austin was born on 7 December 1668 at Rowley, MA. He was the son of Capt. Anthony Austin and Esther Huggins. Ensign Anthony Austin married Abigail Holcombe, daughter of Sgt. Benajah Holcombe and Sarah Eno, in 1699 at Suffield, CT. Ensign Anthony Austin died in 1733.

     Anthony Austin was born in July 1700 at Suffield, MA. He was the son of Ensign Anthony Austin and Abigail Holcombe. Anthony Austin died in 1775.

     Joshua Austin was born in 1718 at Suffield, MA. He was the son of Ensign Anthony Austin and Abigail Holcombe. Joshua Austin married Tryphena Hathway, daughter of Jacob Hathaway and Deborah Kent, in 1747. Joshua Austin died in 1801 at Shickshinny, PA.

     Tryphena Hathway was born in 1729 at Suffield, MA. She was the daughter of Jacob Hathaway and Deborah Kent. Tryphena Hathway married Joshua Austin, son of Ensign Anthony Austin and Abigail Holcombe, in 1747. Tryphena Hathway died in 1802 at Great Barrington, Berkshire Co., MA.

     Mary Holcombe was born on 10 July 1717. She was the daughter of Sgt. Jonathan Holcombe and Mary Buell. Mary Holcombe married Amos Case, son of Bartholomew Case and Mary Humphrey, on 15 August 1739 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.² Mary Holcombe died on 27 January 1802 at age 84.

In McPherson, page 194, Mary who on 15 August 1739 married Amos Case is misidentified as the daughter of Samuel Holcombe, whereas she was the youngest of the seven children of Jonathan Holcombe. His will dated 29 May 1759 refers to her as "Mary, wife of Amos Case." In the will of her brother Jacob, who died 29 July 1737, before her marriage, she is referred to as "sister Mary." The will of her grandfather, Peter Buell, also refers to her as "Mary Case," along with Damaris Ward and Azariah Holcomb, called children of Jonathan Holcomb.³

     Asahel Hayes was born on 4 January 1750. He was the son of Asahel Hayes and Martha Holcombe.

     Michael Hayes was born on 24 November 1751. He was the son of Asahel Hayes and Martha Holcombe. Michael Hayes married Eunice Holcombe, daughter of Deacon Azariah Holcombe and Hannah Loomis.

     Oliver Hayes was born on 4 March 1756. He was the son of Asahel Hayes and Martha Holcombe.

     Affiah Hayes was born on 24 September 1757 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Asahel Hayes and Martha Holcombe. Affiah Hayes married Thomas Giddings, son of Deacon Thomas Giddings and Mary Colt, in 1775 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. Affiah Hayes died on 19 December 1804 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 47.

     Asenath Hayes was born on 7 February 1760. He was the son of Asahel Hayes and Martha Holcombe.

     Benajah Hayes was born on 12 October 1761. He was the son of Asahel Hayes and Martha Holcombe.

     Leury Hayes was born on 7 January 1765. She was the daughter of Asahel Hayes and Martha Holcombe.

     Anne Hayes was born on 2 February 1772. She was the daughter of Asahel Hayes and Martha Holcombe.

     Herbert Holcombe was born circa 1862 at IN.¹ He was the son of Rev. Theodore Isaac Holcombe and Sarah Elizabeth Williams.¹

     Abigail Hayes was born on 31 August 1684 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of George Hayes and Abigail Dibble.

     Dr. Joseph Almeron Holcombe was the son of Joseph Holcombe and Julia Blanchard.

     Sarah (?) married George Hayes at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. Sarah (?) died on 27 March 1683 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.¹

     George Hayes was born on 26 March 1683. He was the son of George Hayes and Sarah (?) George Hayes died on 3 April 1683.

     Sarah Hayes was born on 22 January 1687 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of George Hayes and Abigail Dibble. Sarah Hayes married John Goddard.

     John Goddard was born on 31 August 1682 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.² He married Sarah Hayes, daughter of George Hayes and Abigail Dibble. John Goddard died before 30 June 1760 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.²

     Mary Hayes was born on 6 January 1689/90 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of George Hayes and Abigail Dibble.

     Joanna Hayes was born on 2 October 1692 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of George Hayes and Abigail Dibble. Joanna Hayes married James Hillyer II, son of Sergeant James Hillyer and Mary Wakefield, on 5 January 1709/10 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.² Joanna Hayes died after 1780.³

     James Hillyer II was born on 14 April 1683 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Sergeant James Hillyer and Mary Wakefield.² James Hillyer II married Joanna Hayes, daughter of George Hayes and Abigail Dibble, on 5 January 1709/10 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ James Hillyer II died in December 1770 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT, at age 87.¹

     George Hayes was born on 9 March 1694/95 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of George Hayes and Abigail Dibble.

     William Hayes was born on 13 June 1697 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of George Hayes and Abigail Dibble. William Hayes married Joanna Lee on 4 September 1723 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹

     Benjamin Hayes was born in 1706 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of George Hayes and Abigail Dibble.

     Dorothy Hayes was born in 1703 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of George Hayes and Abigail Dibble. Dorothy Hayes was baptized in 1706.

     Eunice Colton was born on 5 April 1746 at Stafford, Tolland Co., CT.¹ She married Lt. Asa Higley, son of Joseph Higley and Sarah Case, in 1770 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ Eunice Colton died circa 1810 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹

     Elizabeth Drake was born on 22 July 1664 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of John Drake and Hannah Moore.¹

     Brewster Higley Jr. was born on 12 December 1709. He was the son of Brewster Higley and Hester Holcombe. Brewster Higley Jr. married Hester Holcombe, daughter of Ensign John Holcombe and Ann Pettibone, on 13 March 1734 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.² Brewster Higley Jr. died on 21 March 1794 at age 84.
