     Gad Wilcox was born in 1783. He was the son of Ezra Wilcox Jr. and Rosanna Case.

     Edmund Wilcox was born in 1788. He was the son of Ezra Wilcox Jr. and Rosanna Case. Edmund Wilcox died in 1860.

     Charles Humphrey was born on 25 May 1754 at West Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Lieutenant Charles Humphrey and Sarah Humphrey. Charles Humphrey married Hannah Case, daughter of Abraham Case and Rachel Case. Charles Humphrey died in 1805 at West Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.

Charles settled near his father, in West Simsbury, Ct., on the East Hill. His will was dated July 14th, 1797, and proved Feb. 26th, 1805; his wife Hannah and son Charles executors; mentions, besides son Charles, daughters mary and Rachel. Inventory taken; amount, $4,285.03; gives his wife one third.²

     Abine Alderman was born in 1821.¹ He was the son of Timothy Alderman and Sallie West.¹ Abine Alderman died in 1907.¹

     Mary Humphrey was born in 1782. She was the daughter of Charles Humphrey and Hannah Case. Mary Humphrey married Ira Case, son of Silas Case and Mary Case, on 18 November 1806 at First Congregational Chruch, Canton, Hartford Co., CT. Mary Humphrey died on 18 March 1822.

     Charles Humphrey was born on 31 March 1785 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Charles Humphrey and Hannah Case. Charles Humphrey married Laura Case, daughter of Capt. Uriah Case and Eunice Dill, on 28 February 1811 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT. Charles Humphrey died on 6 July 1859 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT, at age 74.²

     Rachel Humphrey was born in 1790 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Charles Humphrey and Hannah Case. Rachel Humphrey married Abel Case Jr., son of Abel Case and Huldah Higley. Rachel Humphrey died on 30 October 1861 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT.

     Jane Leete was born on 29 September 1757. She was the daughter of Samuel Leete and Jane Kelly. Jane Leete married Silas Case, son of Amos Case and Mary Holcombe. Jane Leete died on 5 May 1777 at age 19.

     Perhaps the "widow Mary Kelly" that Don Barber reports to have married Samuel Leete as his 2nd wife before marrying Elizabeth Barber.

     Ruth Cost Ducan also cites Canton First Congregational Church records. Ira Case was born on 7 December 1782 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Silas Case and Mary Case. Ira Case married Mary Humphrey, daughter of Charles Humphrey and Hannah Case, on 18 November 1806 at First Congregational Chruch, Canton, Hartford Co., CT. Ira Case died on 17 September 1848 at age 65.

     Levi Case was born on 8 August 1787 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Silas Case and Jane Leete. Levi Case married Keturah Bandell, daughter of John George Bandell and Sarah Barber. Levi Case died on 21 September 1865 at age 78.

     Ruggles Case was born on 28 September 1789 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Silas Case and Jane Leete. Ruggles Case married Cynthia Case, daughter of Capt. Uriah Case and Eunice Dill. Ruggles Case died on 4 August 1881 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT, at age 91. He was buried at North Canton Cemetery, North Canton, Hartford Co., CT.

     Laura Case was born on 9 May 1788. She was the daughter of Capt. Uriah Case and Eunice Dill. Laura Case married Charles Humphrey, son of Charles Humphrey and Hannah Case, on 28 February 1811 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT. Laura Case died on 11 July 1842 at age 54. She was buried at Canton Baptist Cemetery, Canton, Hartford Co., CT.²

     Huldah Higley was born on 1 February 1749/50 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.³ She was the daughter of Brewster Higley Jr. and Hester Holcombe. Huldah Higley married Abel Case, son of Amos Case and Mary Holcombe, on 8 July 1777. Huldah Higley died on 12 August 1810 at age 60.

     Abel Case Jr. was born on 12 April 1783 at Canton, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Abel Case and Huldah Higley. Abel Case Jr. married Rachel Humphrey, daughter of Charles Humphrey and Hannah Case. Abel Case Jr. died on 29 September 1831 at age 48.

     Ruth Cost Duncan gives his death place as Burlington. Giles Humphrey was born on 20 March 1759 at West Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Ezekiel Humphrey and Elizabeth Pettibone. Giles Humphrey married Elizabeth Case, daughter of Abraham Case and Rachel Case. Giles Humphrey died in March 1816.

     Ezekiel Humphrey was born on 28 August 1719 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Ensign Samuel Humphrey and Lydia North. Ezekiel Humphrey died in 1795 at West Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.

     Joseph Case Jr. was born on 30 November 1722 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Joseph Case and Hannah Humphrey. Joseph Case Jr. married Mary Tuller, daughter of Jacob Tuller and Mary Moses, on 29 July 1742.² Joseph Case Jr. married Sarah Reed, daughter of Jacob Reed and Mary Hill, on 5 May 1763 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.² Joseph Case Jr. died on 13 February 1801 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 78.

     Mary Tuller was born on 10 January 1723. She was the daughter of Jacob Tuller and Mary Moses. Mary Tuller married Joseph Case Jr., son of Joseph Case and Hannah Humphrey, on 29 July 1742.¹ Mary Tuller died on 5 January 1760 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 36.

     Hannah Case was born on 25 March 1725 or 1726. She was the daughter of Joseph Case and Hannah Humphrey.

     Asahel Case was born on 23 March 1729 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.² He was the son of Joseph Case and Hannah Humphrey. Asahel Case married Dorothy Phelps, daughter of Amos Phelps and Sarah Pettibone, on 22 February 1750 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.² Asahel Case died on 23 July 1809 at Norfolk, Litchfield Co., CT, at age 80.² He was buried at Grantville Cemetery, Norfolk, Litchfield Co., CT.²

     Dorothy Phelps was born on 8 August 1734 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.³ She was the daughter of Amos Phelps and Sarah Pettibone. Dorothy Phelps married Asahel Case, son of Joseph Case and Hannah Humphrey, on 22 February 1750 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.³ Dorothy Phelps died on 8 February 1816 at Norfolk, Litchfield Co., CT, at age 81.³ She was buried at Grantville Cemetery, Norfolk, Litchfield Co., CT.³

     Timothy Phelps was born on 11 April 1738 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Amos Phelps and Sarah Pettibone. Timothy Phelps married Rachel Foote on 5 January 1760. Timothy Phelps married Sarah Case, daughter of Joseph Case and Hannah Humphrey. Timothy Phelps died on 14 May 1783 at age 45.

     Sarah removed to NY with her second husband. Sarah Case married (?) Stewart. Sarah Case was born in 1743. She was the daughter of Joseph Case and Hannah Humphrey. Sarah Case married Timothy Phelps, son of Amos Phelps and Sarah Pettibone. Sarah Case died in 1795.

     Virgil Holcombe was born on 4 April 1808.² He was the son of Benajah Philo Holcombe II and Ascenath Phelps. Virgil Holcombe married Betsey Messenger on 2 February 1829 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. Virgil Holcombe died on 19 January 1846 at age 37.² He was buried at West Granby Cemetery, Granby, Hartford Co., CT.²

Virgil's death must have been after the birth of dauther Arlesta in 1845 and before 1847. Betsey had a daughter Ruth Dean, age 2, in the 1850 census.

Betsey and second husband Timothy Dean were enumerated in the 1850 Granby, Hartford Co., CT federal census. He was a farmer age 40, she was 37. Also in the household were Crayton age 20, Wilson age 17, Newton age 15, Rhoda age 10, Arlesta age 5, and Ruth Dean, age 2.

McPherson's rather confused listing for this family shows Virgil's birth date as 5 April 1817.

     Betsey Messenger married Virgil Holcombe, son of Benajah Philo Holcombe II and Ascenath Phelps, on 2 February 1829 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. Betsey Messenger died on 24 January 1892 at West Granby, Granby, Hartford Co., CT; Cancer.

Timothy and Betsey were enumerated in the 1850 Granby, Hartford Co., CT federal census. He was a farmer, age 40, she was 37. Also in the household were Betsey's children from her first marriage.

     Crayton fled an apprenticeship and "went to sea" as a teenager. His letters and visits home, and his generosity when he was home, led his family to believe that he had become fabulously wealthy in his seafaring adventures.

In fact, his adventures had many highs and lows but never produced the fortunes his family imagined. He became a trader in the South Pacific and was living on the island of Yap when he was killed by Moros with spears and then lifted on spearpoints and carried away.

Carol Laun, the curator of the Salmon Brook Historical Socitey, has written a wonderful article on Crayton of about 27 pages.

Crayton was enumerated in the 1850 Granby, Hartford Co., CT federal census in the household of Timothy Dean, age 20, as a sailor. Crayton Philo Holcombe was born on 24 January 1830. He was the son of Virgil Holcombe and Betsey Messenger. Crayton Philo Holcombe died at St. Matthias Island, New Guinea.

     Nelson Virgil Holcombe was born on 21 June 1833.¹ He was the son of Virgil Holcombe and Betsey Messenger. Nelson Virgil Holcombe married Susan Patterson, daughter of Michael Patterson and Rachel Dane, in 1869. Nelson Virgil Holcombe died on 20 February 1883 at age 49.¹ He was buried at West Granby Cemetery, Granby, Hartford Co., CT; no stone.

Nelson and Susan were enumerated in the 1870 Granby, Hartford Co., CT, census with Betsey.

Nelson and Susan were enumerated in the 1880 Granby, Hartford Co., CT, census with children Betsey and Anice. Also wth them was boarder Charles R. Holcombe.

     Newton Jay Holcombe was born in 1835. He was the son of Virgil Holcombe and Betsey Messenger. Newton Jay Holcombe died in 1859 at Drowning, Cape Verde Islands.

     Rhoda M. Holcombe was born on 25 April 1839.¹ She was the daughter of Virgil Holcombe and Betsey Messenger. Rhoda M. Holcombe married Manuel Gutierrez in 1856. Rhoda M. Holcombe died on 4 April 1857 at age 17; scarlatina.¹ She was buried at West Granby Cemetery, Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹

     Arlesta Betsey Holcombe was born on 28 May 1845.¹ She was the daughter of Virgil Holcombe and Betsey Messenger. Arlesta Betsey Holcombe married Manuel Gutierrez. Arlesta Betsey Holcombe died on 20 August 1894 at age 49; cancer.¹ She was buried at West Granby Cemetery, Granby, Hartford Co., CT.

Information on the Gutierrez family is from a Bible record in the Eva Dewey file at the Salmon Brook Historical Society.

     Ruth Dean was born in 1848. She was the daughter of Timothy Dean and Betsey Messenger.

     Manuel Gutierrez was born on 1 January 1835 at Asturias Province, Spain.¹ He married Rhoda M. Holcombe, daughter of Virgil Holcombe and Betsey Messenger, in 1856. Manuel Gutierrez married Arlesta Betsey Holcombe, daughter of Virgil Holcombe and Betsey Messenger. Manuel Gutierrez died on 17 January 1894 at age 59.¹

     Susan Patterson was born on 10 August 1836 at Queenstown, Ireland.^2,1 She was the daughter of Michael Patterson and Rachel Dane.¹ Susan Patterson married Nelson Virgil Holcombe, son of Virgil Holcombe and Betsey Messenger, in 1869. Susan Patterson died on 29 May 1911 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 74.¹ She was buried at West Granby Cemetery, Granby, Hartford Co., CT; no stone.

Susan "possibly" married 1st Speedman or Seedman. Granby Vital Records call her "Susan Seedman" at her marriage to Nelson, but called her "Susan Patterson" when their children were born. ³

     Betsey M. Holcombe was born on 8 May 1869 at West Granby, Hartford Co., CT.^1,2 She was the daughter of Nelson Virgil Holcombe and Susan Patterson. Betsey M. Holcombe married Edward James Aldrich on 7 January 1891 at Westfield, Hampden Co., MA.² Betsey M. Holcombe died on 8 December 1931 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 62. She was buried at Center Cemetery, Granby, Hartford Co., CT.³

Edward and Betsy M. were enumerated in the 1900 Granby, Hartford Co., CT, federal census. He was a farm laborer, age 37, she was 30. The only child in the household was Olive M. 5.

From the Courant 9 December 1931:

Mrs. Bessie Holcomb Aldrich, wife of Edward Aldrich, died at her home on Wes Street, Simsbury, today (December 8), after a cerebral shock. She was 62 years old. Beside her husband, Mrs. Aldrich leaves a daughter, Mrs. Olive Denslow of Hartford, two grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Anise Norman of Waterbury. The funeral will be at the home at 2 p.m. Friday and Rev. Dr. L. H. Dorchester, pastor of the Simsbury Methodist Church, will officiate.

     Manuel Gutierrez was born on 14 August 1876. He was the son of Manuel Gutierrez and Arlesta Betsey Holcombe. Manuel Gutierrez died on 30 September 1916 at age 40.

     Florence F. Gutierrez was born on 9 March 1863. He was the son of Manuel Gutierrez and Arlesta Betsey Holcombe. Florence F. Gutierrez died on 20 October 1920 at age 57.

     Lenora Gutierrez was born on 11 April 1860. She was the daughter of Manuel Gutierrez and Arlesta Betsey Holcombe.

     Nellie M. Gutierrez was born on 28 May 1868. She was the daughter of Manuel Gutierrez and Arlesta Betsey Holcombe. Nellie M. Gutierrez died on 12 July 1930 at age 62.

     Bela Tuller was born in 1773. He was the son of Elijah Tuller and Sarah Case. Bela Tuller married Lydia Holcombe, daughter of Benajah Holcombe II and Lydia Forward, in 1794. Bela Tuller died in 1821.

     Mary Wakefield was born on 21 August 1645.¹ She married Sergeant James Hillyer, son of John Hillyer and Ann (?), on 28 June 1677 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.¹ Mary Wakefield died before 30 March 1699 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹

     Norman Humphrey was born on 17 May 1781 at Bristol, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Giles Humphrey and Elizabeth Case. Norman Humphrey married Anna Pettibone.
