Emily Seymour Goodwin1

b. 2 April 1852, d. 28 March 1923
Emily Seymour Goodwin was born on 2 April 1852 at Bristol, Hartford Co., CT.2,3,4 She was the daughter of Edwin Olmsted Goodwin and Hannah Harriet Brown. Emily Seymour Goodwin married John Marshall Holcombe, son of James Huggins Holcombe and Emily Merrill Johnson, on 28 January 1873 at 187 Cumberland St., Brooklyn, NY; at the bride's home.4 Emily Seymour Goodwin died on 28 March 1923 at 79 Spring St., Hartford, Hartford Co., CT, at age 70.2,4 She was buried at Ancient Burying Ground, Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.5

Emily's ability has been well demonstrated in her long career of leadership and service in civic undertakings, State and National in scope, which required considerable financing.

She delivered the address for the Connecticut DAR in accepting as a museum and shrine the Ellsworth ancestral home of Oliver Ellsworth, first Chief Justice of the United States.

From the Courant 29 March 1923:

Mrs. John M. Holcombe, wife of the president of the Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company, and long one of the leading women of the city in patriotic enterprises died suddenly at her home at No. 79 Spring street yesterday, after returning from a short automobile ride. For several months she had been suffering from heart trouble and although relatives were aware that her condition was dangerous, Mrs. Holcombe and others were not acquainted with its gravity and her death is a grievous shock.

Mr. and Mrs. Holcombe celebrated January 29 their golden wedding at their home and Mrs. Holcombe was then apparently in good health and withstood the strain of the reception.

The funeral will be held at the home No. 79 Spring street, at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. Services will be conducted by Rev. Dr. Rockwell Harmon Potter of the Center Church. Burial will be in the Ancient Burying Ground with whose restoration in 1899 Mrs. Holcombe was intimately identified. A resolution passed by the court of common council I 1913 provided that space should be reserved for such purpose.

Mrs. Holcombe was of early Colonial ancestry, a descendant in the eighth generation of Ozias Goodwin, one of the first settlers of Hartford, who came across the western ocean from Essex, England, to Cambridge in Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1632 and to Hartford in 1636. Her line is Ozias, Nathaniel, Deacon John, Deacon John 2nd, Joseph, Hezekiah, Edwin Olmsted Goodwin.

Her father was born in East Hartford November 24, 1819, and married Mrs. Harriet (Brown) Pomeroy, September 13, 1848. He was a lawyer and one of the incorporators of the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company in 1846.

Mrs. Holcombe was born, April 2, 1852 in Bristol, and was accordingly within five days of seventy one years. In her early childhood her parents removed to Brooklyn, N.Y., where she was a pupil in the Brooklyn Heights Seminary, from which she was graduated in 1870 with high honors and as president of her class.

January 29, 1873 she married Mr. Holcombe and the couple made their home in Hartford, in the house built in 1815.

Three children were born of the union, Harold Goodwin Holcombe, Emily Marguerite Holcombe and John Marshall Holcombe, Jr.

By heredity and by an innate bent of mind Mrs. Holcombe was intensely a lover of her flag and her country and her patriotism was one of her guiding, impelling and compelling factors of her life. When Ruth Wyllys Chapter of the daughters of the American Revolution was formed she was its organizer. This was in 1892 and for the next eleven years she was its regent. The term limit was removed that she might remain at its head as long as she would consent to preside. She resigned October 31, 1903. She attended nearly every convention of the national order in Washington in that period.

In the movement of the chapter to save the Ancient Burying Ground in the rear of the Center Church she was a leader. She originated the plan, for widening Gold street and removing the line of old tenement houses of unsightly appearance on the north side of the street. In the project the support of the patriotic public was desired and generous response was made, but delays and unforeseen obstacles were encountered, only to be overcome by the unfaltering faith and tenacity of Mrs. Holcombe, who at one time seemed to be acting almost alone. Her labor was eventually crowned with entire success and to her, most of all, the city is indebted for the restoration of the cemetery and the improvement of its approaches. June 17, 1899, the celebration of the completion of the work took place. As regent of the chapter and originator of the project, Mrs. Holcombe made the address and she delivered to the mayor the deeds of certain parcels of land involved.

In securing the old home of Chief Justice Oliver Ellsworth of Palisado avenue, Windsor, for patriotic purposes, Mrs. Holcombe had a prominent part. By appointment by Mrs. Sara T. Kinney, state regent, of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she was chairman of the committee on supervision of repairing and furnishing of the homestead prior to the formal opening in October, 1903. Through her effort the entire building was equipped with antique furniture, mainly gifts from various chapters. She had a thorough technical knowledge of the articles desired.

She was a charter member of the Connecticut Society of Colonial Dames of America. She was a member of the first board of managers and was re-elected as often as the by-laws would allow, consecutive terms being forbidden. From 1908 to 1912 she was president. She had also been vice-president and historian.

Frequently she was a delegate to the council of the national society at Washington.

As a member of the Board of Lady managers of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904, she was active in obtaining for Connecticut, a suitable site for its official state building and also adequate representation, and as a result of her co-operation with the state commission the Connecticut building was one of the most artistic in the exposition. Later she was appointed special commissioner of and antiques and historical articles.

The prestige which the success of her work brought led the authorities of the state to urge her to take charge of the Connecticut building at the Jamestown exposition in 1907 which followed the classic model of a Litchfield home.

In her patriotic work Mrs. Holcombe advocated that Connecticut should be parted from its nickname of the Nutmeg State and should be styled the Constitution State, as the Constitution of the United States was modeled after Connecticut’s first constitution, known as the Fundamental Orders of 1639.

In 1909, when the old State House was about to be sacrificed for a proposed erection of a business block, she appealed to the Connecticut Colonial Dames and a fund of $10,000 was raised for the restoration. This sum with accrued interest and many subsequent gifts is available for the care of the building.

While devoted to her country and patriotic in all her impulses and judgments, Mrs. Holcombe was even more a devoted wife and mother and in conversation at the time of the golden wedding over the purposes of her life she dwelt on her home as her chief aim and happiness. Besides her three children, she leaves four grandchildren. These are Harold Goodwin Holcombe, Jr., Seth Pomeroy Holcombe and Shepard Monson Holcombe, children of Mr. and Mrs. Harold G. Holcombe; and Marguerite Emily Holcombe, daughter of Captain and Mrs. John M. Holcombe, Jr.

Hannah Harriet Brown1

b. circa 1817, d. 12 November 1904
Hannah Harriet Brown was born circa 1817. She was the daughter of Jonathan Clark Brown and Sophia Bingham. Hannah Harriet Brown married Chauncey Pomeroy. Hannah Harriet Brown married Edwin Olmsted Goodwin, son of Hezekiah Goodwin and Emily Pratt, on 13 September 1848. Hannah Harriet Brown died on 12 November 1904 at Hartford, Hartford Co., CT. She was buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY.

From the Courant 14 November 1904:

Mrs. Harriet B. Goodwin, widow of Edwin Olmsted Goodwin, died early Saturday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John M. Holcombe, No. 79 Spring street. She was in her eighty-seventh year and for some years the infirmities of age had confined her to the house, and more recently to her room, but her general health was excellent and the trials and burdens of great age were borne with a sweet spirit of Christian patience and cheerfulness. Her death was due only to the gradual decay of vitality, and with no attending disease.

Her husband, Edwin Olmsted Goodwin of Brooklyn, N.Y., who died in 1882, was a representative ofmany of the old families of Hartford and in this city, which always claimed his loyal devotion, he lived when a young man, a member of the old First Church and friend of Dr. Hawes. Here he studied law and was admitted to the bar about 1844. He was one of the founders of the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company, bestowing upon the infant corporation the name it has so long and honorably borne.

Mrs. Goodwin was a woman of very attractive personality and retiring and gentle disposition, but of the nost sterling qualities, a devout Christian, devoted to her church adn her home and a true product of long lines of Puritan ancestry, whose members were among the founders ofr Massachusetts and Connecticut. All were English and Puritans--among them Governor roger Conant of Massachusetts, John Therndike, who returned to his native land, died and was buried in Westminster Abbey, his son, captain Paul thorndike, Elder John Whipple and his daughter Sarah, who married Deacon Josehp Goodhue, and who just before her death wrote the famous "Farewell" to her husband and ten children, whichpoem was reprinted as late as 1830. Among the Connecticut founders were Thomas Bingham of Norwich and Mary Rudd, "the heroine of Bride's Brook," Hon. Richart Treat fo Wethersfield, one of the "patentees," Lieutenant John Hollister and Ensign William Goodrich, also, of Wethersfield, Robert Day and Edith Stebbins, his wife, of Hartford, and Matthew Marvin, both "original proprietors."

Mrs. Goodwin was a member of the First Church, having within a few years transferred her membership from the Clinton Avenue Church of Brooklyn, N.Y. Besides her daughter, she leaves a son, Edwin P. Godwin of New York. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the house, and the services will be conducted by Rev. Rockwell Harmon Potter. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Emily Marguerite Holcombe1

b. 24 October 1877, d. 6 February 1926
Emily Marguerite Holcombe was born on 24 October 1877 at 79 Spring St., Hartford, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of John Marshall Holcombe and Emily Seymour Goodwin. Emily Marguerite Holcombe died on 6 February 1926 at 79 Spring St., Hartford, Hartford Co., CT, at age 48.2 She was buried at Ancient Burying Ground, Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.

Emily liked to read, one of her favorite authors being Tennyson, and play the piano, at which she excelled.

Seth says she was born on the 24th, Shepherd says she was born on the 14th.

In the family bible in her father's handwriting, her birthdate is the 24th. The date in the cemetery marker's book is therefore in error: Whether a typographical or on stone now is moot.

Seth Pomeroy Holcombe1

b. 15 February 1918, d. 9 July 2009
Seth Pomeroy Holcombe
1918 - 2009
Seth Pomeroy Holcombe was born on 15 February 1918 at 61 Spring St., Hartford, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Harold Goodwin Holcombe and Ethel Percy Monson.2 Seth Pomeroy Holcombe married Lucy Brace Eaton on 17 January 1959 at 58 Terry Road, Hartford, Hartford Co., CT. Seth Pomeroy Holcombe died on 9 July 2009 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 91. He was buried at Spring Grove Cemetery, Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.3

Granby lost a dedicated citizen and fascinating individual with the passing of Seth P. Holcombe in July. As a lifelong student of history, Seth would want the telling of his story to begin at the beginning.4

In 1918, with Woodrow Wilson our President, the devastation of World War I was nearly complete and the worldwide influenza Pandemic struck -- but there was good news as well: 1918 saw gasoline at only eight cents a gallon, the Red Sox and the Babe winning the World Series and the birth of two of baseball's most devoted fans: Ted Williams and Seth Holcombe! Exterminator won the Kentucky Derby in an upset. The first commercial refrigerator for home use, (the Kelvinator) was introduced and so was the world's first air mail postal service -- between New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Even the "immutable" passage of time adjusted to mark Seth's arrival as Congress established time zones and enacted Daylight Saving Time. 4

Seth grew up with his two brothers, Harold and Shepherd. He attended the Kingswood-Oxford School and the Loomis School before graduating from the Gunnery in Washington, CT. Seth's father was a horseman and introduced Seth to what was to become a lifelong love. He presented Seth with his first horse, Hightop, and rode with Seth out of a stable in Bishops Corner. Their family enjoyed a vacation home in Marlborough to which Seth and his father would ride their horsed from Hartford. His description of crossing the Bulkley Bridge on horseback was typically clear and brief: "scary!" 4

The English language was important to Seth. He graduated from Trinity College with his degree in Latin and felt that the proper use of language was an issue of individual integrity. Seth was a person who spoke clearly what was on his mind; one could always be sure that he meant what he said. He had little patience for the casual and careless use --and misuse -- of rhetoric in politics and the media. 4

After college, Seth went to work at the Hartford National Bank and in 1959 married Lucy Eaton, his partner for the next 50 years. Herself an accomplished horse-woman, Lucy brought her gelding Echo to join Seth's Viganita, both registered Morgan horses. In the years to follow, Seth and Lucy would train and compete their horses to ride and to drive in harness. Their bay gelding, Allen Ash, high stepping through the snow as he pulled their sleigh, transformed their Silver Street pasture into a Currier and Ives image. For 15 years, Seth served as the secretary and registrar of the Morgan Horse Club (now the American Morgan Horse Association), leading the Morgan horse industry with fairness, transparency and integrity. 4

The very same level of stewardship that Seth devoted to his animals he gave to his land. Their homestead on Silver Street is a virtual refuge for all wildlife that lives there or that may be just passing through. Seth's love of the nature surrounding him was not that of a casual observer from within the comfort of the house. He walked his land, becoming familiar with its many different faces and inhabitants. The preservation of their North Granby property in its natural state was a great source of satisfaction to Seth. The Granby Land Trust recognized Seth and Lucy's foresight and gift with their prestigious Mary Edwards Friend of the Land Trust award in 2005. 4 Twice elected to the Granby Zoning Board of Appeals, the second time the highest vote-getter in town; on the Board of Directors of the Salmon Brook Historical Society; obviously interested in genealogy. 5

Beside having as two of his favorite poets Emily Dickinson and Alfred E. Housman, Seth is interested in history, especially his family history. While Seth completed seven family genealogies, Lucy has compiled quite an extensive compendium of her Brace Family. She has been Registrar for Associates States for the Connecticut Colonial Dames for numerous years. Lucy's family moved from 165 West Horter Street, Philadelphia to Four Mile Road, West Hartford; then to 284 North Oxford Street, Hartford; then to 58 Terry road, Hartford, which dwelling was built by Lucy's grandmother. Lucy and Seth have lived at 90 Silver Street, North Granby, Connecticut since 1974, when they moved from 57 East Weatogue Street, Simsbury, into which they moved after matrimony. 6

The most important thing in Seth's life was Lucy, but primary among his other interests were history, genealogy, and the Salmon Brook Historical Society. It was Seth who convinced Mark Williams to write the definitive history of Granby, Tempest in a Small Town. The new Preservation Barn would not have been built without the initiative, encouragement and support of Seth. The research library has been named in his honor. 7

Seth was one of the Thursday morning volunteers for decades. He helped pull the Hayes glass-sided hearse down Salmon Brook Street from the Allison barn to the Society barn. He sanded rust from metal artifacts, raked leaves and cleaned leather, as well as doing specialized archival work. He was part of the group who created our unique tobacco barn museum. 7

He was a valuable member of our Board of Directors for multiple terms. Seth had an exquisite command of the English language and his erudite pronouncements were legendry. He had a keen intelligence coupled with a fey sense of humor. He enlivened our coffee breaks with jokes and when we teased him about wearing not one, but two holey sweaters, he solemnly informed us that the holes were in different places. 7

Besides his wife, Lucy of 50 years, he is survived by a brother, Shepherd Holcombe of West Hartford and his nieces and nephews. His family would like to thank all the staff at the Farmington Valley VNA for the care that was given to Mr. Holcombe. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 14, 2 p.m., at the First Congregational Church, Granby, 219 North Granby Rd., Granby. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Hartford at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Salmon Brook Historical Society, P.O. Box 840, Granby, CT 06035. 8

From the Hartford Courant, 2 December 2012:

Shepherd Monson Holcombe, Sr. died on November 28, 2012. He was born in Northampton, MA on June 12, 1921, and grew up in the house in which his family had lived since 1840 on Spring Street in Hartford, a city he loved and in which he raised his family and lived his exemplary life.

Following graduation from Yale in 1943, he completed the meteorology course at New York University and became the weather officer for the 459th Bomb Group, serving as Captain in Southern Italy and receiving the Bronze Star. From 1945 until 1968 he worked for Connecticut General Life Insurance Co. as an actuary and head of the Actuarial Consulting Department in Group Pensions. In 1969 he left to found the actuarial consulting firm of Hooker & Holcombe, from which he retired in 1989.

His involvements in Hartford reflect his devotion to the city and its history and cultural institutions. He served as a member on the boards of the Wadsworth Atheneum, Connecticut Historical Society, Old State House, Bushnell Memorial, Spring Grove Cemetery, and Warburton Chapel Trustees. His generosity is reflected in the Shepherd M. Holcombe Archives, created at the Bushnell Memorial in 2000, the purchase of the sideboard for the Mark Twain House, and the Emily Seymour Goodwin Holcombe Education Center at the Old State House to honor his grandmother's work. He served as governor of the Society of the Descendants of the Founders of Hartford and Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Connecticut, President of the Mental Health Association of Hartford, and Moderator of Weekapaug, Rhode Island, the beach community which he dearly loved. During retirement, he was President and then Chairman of Hartford's Ancient Burying Ground Association, working tirelessly for restoration and preservation and continuing work begun by his grandmother. Shep's positive, cheerful attitude and his unwavering enthusiasm in all aspects of life kept him vital and productive through nine decades.
