William H. Whitney was born on 21 April 1834 at Southwick, Hampden Co., MA.1 He was the son of William L. Whitney and Emeline Holcombe.1 William H. Whitney died on 1 July 1916 at Chapin Memorial Hospital, Springfield, Hampden Co., MA, at age 82.1

From the Courant 3 July 1916:

William H. Whitney, one of the most prominent and highly respected citizens of Enfield, died Saturday evening in the Chapin Memorial Hospital in Springfield. He was born in Southwick, Mass., April 21, 1834, a son of William L. Whitney and Emeline Holcomb. In his early days he was graduated from the Suffield academy, and after graduation he devoted the major portion of his life to educational work. As a school teacher he taught in the public school in New Hartford five years, one year in the Enfield high school and one year in the Elm Green academy in Granby. He then moved to East Henrietta, Monroe County, N.Y., where for five years he held a lease of the Monroe academy, a preparatory day and boarding school, of which he had been principal. He afterwards engaged in the schoolbook publishing business with J. W. Schermerhorn, and later accepted a place with the prominent firm of Cowperthwait & Co. of Philadelphia, with which he remained about thirty years, having charge of the New York field covered by the firm. He retired to enter the employ of Ginn & Co. of New York, a branch of the Boston firm of that name, and remained with that firm until it was absorbed by the American Schoolbook Publishing Company. Since then he had lived at his home on Enfield street and led a retired life, although he did light farming work on the broad lands connected with his residence.

He was married August 16, 1861 to Miss Rosina Bostwick, daughter of the late John Bostwick. Both Mr. and Mrs. Whitney were descendants from Revolutionary stock. His grandfather, Samuel P. Whitney, was born in Simsbury in 1775, and lived to the advanced age of 98. From the same family is descended Eli Whitney7, who originated the first cotton gin, also Asa Whitney, who was the first to make the proposition to build the Pacific railroad. His great grandfathers on both sides fought in the Revolutionary war. Amasa Holcomb, a brother of Mrs. Whitney, was the inventor of the first telescope in this country, which was said to have been the equal of any imported from Europe. Another brother was a Yale instructor, and M. B. Whitney of Westfield, former state attorney, is a cousin. Mrs. Whitney grandfather, Thomas Bostwick was Thompsonville’s only veteran of the battle of Waterloo, and he died in 1887 at the age of 94.

Mr. Whitney was a member of the First Congregational Church and a regular attendant at all services. He had been a member of the Masonic order close to half a century. Politically, he ws a republican.

Mr. Whitney was the father of William H. Whitney, Jr., who is one of the prominent figures in the paint manufacturing business in the United States, and a present is president of the colonial paint works of Brooklyn, N.Y., which is incorporated under the laws of New Jersey. He is also a director of the Greenpoint national bank in Brooklyn and is a member of the manufacturers’ association of New York and numerous other trade associations in different parts of the country. Besides his son, he leaves his wife, and four daughters, Miss Anna L., Miss Mabel O., who is a graduate nurse; Miss Amy I., who has charge of the Hazard lead works in Hazardville, and Mrs. Edith Grace McClung, all of Thompsonville.

The funeral will be held at 2:30 o’clock this afternoon at his home on Enfield street. Burial will be in the Enfield Cemetery.
