Thomas Holcombe1,2,3

b. 13 December 1690, d. 1765
Thomas Holcombe was born on 13 December 1690 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.4 He was the son of Capt. Thomas Holcombe and Elizabeth Terry. Thomas Holcombe married Mary Manning on 1 October 1714 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT; McCracken spells 1st wife Hanning, Seaver spells it Manning.5 Thomas Holcombe married Sarah Ridout in 1728; McCracken says "probably" second marriage, but he could not assign the children to the two wives with any certainty. Listed here in the order of McCracken. Thomas Holcombe married Christian (?) after 1764.6 Thomas Holcombe died in 1765.

Bowman notes that Mary Manning died in 1776 and that Thomas then married Sarah Christian daughter of Thomas Christian. Simsbury records have Sarah died in March 1764 age 71. These death dates or the order of marriage must be in error.

4 Thomas 4 Holcombs will is dated 15 Sept 1770 and proved 5 Sept 1780
wife Christian, sons Thomas and Josiah, daughters Sarah, Damaris, heirs of Mary and heirs of Sibbel – the daughters got land in the long lots

The will proves that Josiah was a son, even though his birth was not recorded. It also names all the living children as well as Mary and Sybil who are dead but left heirs. The lack of any vital or church records is unfortunate. Isaac Terry probably belongs in this family, but there is no proof. The birth order of the children from the second marriage is unknown. I am assuming that the will lists them in order of age, but since Mary and Sybil are dead, they may have been older than Damaris. There may have been more children who died. 6

This Thomas has the most contradictions in the various genealogies. All the genealogies call his first wife Mary Manning, but Simsbury Vital Records clearly say Hanning and the name Hanning is used for males in later Holcomb generations. We also know he was married to Sarah when they both signed the Covenant in the First Church in Granby between 1736 and 1752. The genealogies call her Sarah Christian d/o Thomas but there is no proof of that and no mention of a Thomas Christian in any area records. Finally, we know he had a third wife in his old age, because he names her in his will and her name is Christian. I wonder if the genealogy writers somehow combined those two names? Sarah died in 1764 and Thomas wrote his will in 1770 calling his wife Christian. That name also is found in later Holcomb generations as a first name for a woman.6

Ruth is not mentioned by Seaver, probably because she died young and was not mentioned in the will. The Simsbury Red Book specifically mentions her as " daughter of thomas holdomb." But there is a Ruth, daughter of Ensign John and Ann Pettibone Holcombe who married Joseph Higley. McCracken misplaced Ruth here also showing her married to Joseph Higley. See Ensign John Holcombe for Ruth and her family.

b. after 5 December 1700
Simsbury Records, page 22, show the death of a Ruth, daughter of Thomas, died May 21, 1706.

It is possible that this unnamed daughter was Ruth and that a subsequent child was named Ruth Ann. Daughter Holcombe was born after 5 December 1700; McCracken says name destroyed, perhaps older than Consider.1 She was the daughter of Capt. Thomas Holcombe and Rebecca Pettibone. Daughter Holcombe was baptized on 23 October 1709; Baptized by Dudley Woodbridge.

Enoch Holcombe married Ann(a) Fowler, daughter of Jonathan Fowler and Catherine Marshall. Enoch Holcombe died on 11 March 1808 at Westfield, Hampden Co., MA, at age 90.

McCracken italicizes the marriage and says: had 10 children in Westfield, MA, facts not verified by me.

It appears that the children of Enoch and Enoch Jr. are co-mingled.

Bowman notes: Spear mentions research by Caroline Sparks of Delaware which indicates that Weir's list of Enoch's children includes children belonging to Enoch Jr. Weir's list was based on Seaver's list.

b. circa 1717, d. 25 July 1805
Josiah Holcombe was born circa 1717 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT; Birth not found, placed here by Hiram Frank Holcombe. He was the son of Thomas Holcombe and Mary Manning. Josiah Holcombe married Abigail Higley, daughter of Nathaniel Higley and Abigail Filer, on 8 November 1742 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.4 Josiah Holcombe left a will on 15 May 1805. He died on 25 July 1805 at Rensselaer Co., NY.5 He was buried at Presbyterian Cemetery, Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., NY. His estate was probated in September 1805.

McCracken placed children starting with Dorcas here. However, in a note dated May 3, 1997, from Stephen M. Lawson of Port Orchard, WA, he describes correspondence with McCracken in 1986 where they discussed an error in TAG where he missed a generation and the children listed are actually Josiah's grandchildren, the children of Josiah and Dorcas Smith.

Josiah's will names his wife Abigail, sons Beriah and Michael, and daughters Abigail and Deborah. Josiah apparently moved to Stephentown in the 1780s with his children and their families. The presence of three men with the name Josiah Holcomb before 1800 makes positive identification of each in various records difficult, but this Josiah appears to the the elder one of that name in the 1800 census of Renasselaer Co., NY.

Bowman also places a child Hannah b. 1741 here.

SARAH HOLCOMBE, WIFE OF ICHABOD MILLER

Daughter of John and Ann (Pettibone) Holcombe

McPherson, page 211.2 3 shows her as a daughter of John and Ann (Pettibone) Holcombe and gives a birth date of 2 May 1716; and on page 214.1 lists a marriage to Ichabod Miller on 27 January 1741, and her death in 1800. McPherson provides no additional information.

Seaver, page 42 4 shows her as a daughter of John and Ann (Pettibone) Holcombe and gives a birth date of 2 May 1716, a marriage to Ichabod Miller on 27 January 1741, and death in 1800.

Bowman, page 28, 5 shows her as a daughter of John and Ann (Pettibone) Holcombe and gives a birth date of 1719, a marriage to Ichabod Miller in 1741, and death in 1800. Bowman continues the line on page 74 and shows 9 chldren.

McCracken, page 167, 6 shows her as a daughter of John and Ann (Pettibone) Holcombe and gives a birth date of 2 May 1719. He does not list any additional information.

Daughter of Thomas and Mary (Hanning) Holcombe

McPherson, page 30.2 3 does not list a daughter Sarah.

Seaver, on page 11, 4 does not list Sarah as a daughter of Thomas and Mary, but rather lists her as a daughter of Thomas' father Thomas and his second wife Rebecca Pettibone, and gives a birth date of 5 September 1719.

Bowman, on page 51, 5 lists Sarah, born 1719, married to Ichabod in 1741, and died in 1800 and references Sarah, the daughter of John and Ann. Bowman does not continue this line.

McCracken, on page 73, 6 lists Sarah, born 5 September 1719. He provides no further information on her.

Three Thomas Holcombs

In an unpublished manuscript from January 2010 Carol Laun writes:

Sarah may or may not have married Ichabod Miller. Here is what is found in SVR.
Sarah 6th d/o John Holcomb b. 2 May 1719 (SVR-46)
Sarah 1st d/o Thomas Holcomb the younger b. 5 Sept 1719 (SVR-47)
Ichabod Miller married Sarah Holcomb 27 Jan 1741/2 (SVR-94)
There is no way to prove which one married Ichabod. Bowman has it both ways, she has Sarah d/o Thomas Holcomb marrying Ichabod and also Sarah d/o John and Ann (Pettibone) Holcomb marrying Ichabod. McPherson ignores SVR and leaves Sarah out of the Thomas Holcomb family and says Sarah d/o John Holcomb was b. 2 May 1716. At any rate, everyone agrees that Ichabod and Sarah lived in West Simsbury, had nine children (SVR-84) and she died in 1800.

Joseph Loomis1,2

b. circa 1590, d. 25 November 1658
Joseph Loomis was born circa 1590 at Braintree, Essex, England.3 He was the son of John Lummys and Agnes Lingwood.4 Joseph Loomis married Mary White, daughter of Robert White and Bridget Allgar, on 30 June 1614 at ParishChurch, Shalford, County Essex, England.4 Joseph Loomis died on 25 November 1658 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.4

from Joseph Loomis by Elisha S. Loomis:

"Joseph was a woolen-draper in Braintree, Essex county, England; sailed from London April 11, 1638, in the ship Susan and Ellen, and arrived at Boston July 17, 1638, tarrying about 1 year at Dorchester, Mass., it is thought. It is mentioned in the town records of Windsor, Vol. I, that on the 2nd of Feb., 1640, he had granted him from the plantation 21 acres adjoining Farmington river, on the west side of the Connecticut river, this 21 acres including the site of the first English settlement made in Conn; also several large tracts of land on the east side of the Connecticut, partly from the town and partly by purchase.

"He therefore probably came to Windsor in the summer or autumn of 1639, and he is generally supposed to have come in company with Rev. Ephraim Huet, who arrived at Windsor, Aug. 17, 1639. He brought with him five sons, all of whom were freemen, Oct. 7, 1669, and three daughters. His house was situated near the mouth of the Farmington River on "The Island," so called because at every great freshet it became temporarily an island by the overflowing of the Connecticut River."

Beverly Schonewolf provided the following information about Joseph's origin and immigration. We are trying to find the original source.

The proof that Joseph Loomis came from Braintree, England is established by the deposition of Joseph Hills of Charlestown, Mass., taken July 30, 1639.

"Joseph Hills of Charlestowne, in New England, Woolen Draper, aged about 36 yeares, sworne, saith upon his oath that he came to New England undertaker in the ship called the Susan and Ellen of London whereof was master Mr. Edward Payne, in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred thirty and eight, the 14th yeare of the raigne of our souraigne Lord the King that now is, and this dpt knowes that divers goods and chattells, victualls & commodities of Joseph Loomis late of Brayntree in the County of Essex, Woolen-draper, wch were put up in three butts, two hogsheds, one halfe hogshed, one barrell, one tubb & three firkins, transported from Malden in the County of Essex to London in an Ipswch Hye, were shipped in the said ship upon the eleventh day of Aprill in the yeare aforesayd, and this deponent cleared the said goods wth divers other goods of the said Joseph Loomis and other mens, in the Custom-house at London, as may appeare by the Customers bookes, and this dept saith that the said goods were transported into New England in the said ship where she arrived on the seventeenth day of July in the yeare aforesayd."

Beverly Schonewolf also provided the following information about Joseph's will and probate.

In Vol. 2, Records of Particular Court for the colony of Connecticut, p. 116, there is an inventory of the estate of Mr. Joseph Loomis, deceased Nov. 25, 1658, in which it is stated that there is a debt in England against Mr. Loomis's estate amounting to 12 pounds, 14 s. 8d.

His estate was inventoried at 178 pounds 10s. 00d, taken by Henry Clarke, John Moore.

McCracken wonders if he was of Granby, 1790 (2/1/6) or of Litchfield Co. (3/3/5). McCracken shows spouse Jerusha. Bowman shows spouse Trifene Youngs but Trifene could have married Noah, son of John and Mary Kent Holcombe.

The Granby Town Records show Noah and Tryphena.

b. 7 July 1759
Darn! Bowman on Vol I. Page 136, Item 4585 has Sarah Holcombe marrying Samuel Taylor in 1786, son of Eldad and Thankful Day Taylor. Then on Vol II:Page 45, Item 42117 she has Tiriza Holcombe marrying Samuel Taylor in 1786, son of Eldad and Thankful Day Taylor.

McPherson on Page 75.2 Item A-4-5-7-6 has Sarah marrying Samuel; then on page 32.2, Item 4-2-1-2-8 Tiriza again marrying Samuel.

Tirza is listed both as a daughter of Thomas and Sarah Loomis Holcombe but also as a daughter of Enoch Holcombe.

Carol Laun in an unpublished manuscript from January 2010 shows that Tirza is unmarried. Her father's estate probated in 1788 indicates that she has not yet married. Tirza Holcombe was born on 7 July 1759 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.3 She was the daughter of Thomas Holcombe and Sarah Loomis. Tirza Holcombe married Samuel Taylor, son of Eldad Taylor and Thankful Day, in 1786.
